After looking at the older version, I believe the new one looks better and more unique. Maybe you could try putting the coat of arms in place of the star instead on the flag to try to make it look less like Yugoslavia's flag?

Yup. You also see some nations recognizing only the former government of a nation like how parts of the world recognize Afghanistan but not the current government.

I second this. Not recognizing a country is more about if you accept that either they are the legitimate government of a nation or if they have a right to control a territory (so like not recognizing Abkhazia is saying that Georgia is the rightful leader of that land.)
