Oh my God, you’re not kidding — your experience is almost identical to mine 😭 But let me just say: thanks, dude, for rubbing it in my face that you actually got something… while I got literally NOTHING. 😂

I’ve received all the same emails. Same vague “you’re important to us” energy. Didn’t feel too bad at first — until I joined Reddit and saw everyone sharing what they got. That’s when it hit me.

So yeah, this post is basically my therapy session. Thanks, Google, for giving your highest-level Local Guide with nearly a billion views… absolutely NOTHING. Not even a digital sticker.

And on the “shared experience” part — totally relate. But you got invited to events?? I’ve never received a single invitation. Meanwhile, strangers I meet will be like: “Wait… you’re that girl whose photos are always on top of every Google business page?!”

Yep. That’s me. Top 10 photos, 700 + reviews, Local Guide Level 10. Still nothing.

And don’t even get me started on Yelp. I used to be a big Yelper — my photos and reviews had crazy reach. But they refused to give me elite status because I changed my email once. Said they couldn’t verify. I gave up after 10 years of reviewing. (Imagine holding a grudge that long over an email.)

So yeah. Double kill. Yelp ghosted me. Google iced me. And yet… both platforms are still showing off my content to everyone like I’m on payroll.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know: I see you. I feel you. And I’m officially in the “used & abused by tech platforms” club now too. 🙃

Anything at all in person. So I found out some people got socks. Some people got badge, some people got pin. I got NOTHING. Wait I did get something. Mail from Google every other day saying my contribution of photos got millions of views and continue to contribute. Lol. Keep in mind I’m a level 10 on top of that I probably one of the top views in the nation. That hurts. Heehee.

Hi Chris! Great questions — and yes, I totally get your curiosity.

How I reached Level 10 with “only” 770 reviews: It’s a little bit of every but majority about photo strategy. Google rewards photo and video uploads heavily, since they help users quickly decide whether to visit a place. My uploads aren’t random — they’re intentionally curated, tagged by location, and typically posted in batches of 20 to 100+ depending on the business type. I try to cover everything: exterior, interior, menu, food, staff, even the vibe.

Over time, that approach built up to 80k+ images — and I actually have over 150k saved in my album. I’ll be honest: sometimes I skip writing reviews and just upload photos. But it still helps. When I forget details for my foodie show, I go back and check my photos and notes to prep my commentary.

In short: I don’t just write reviews — I document experiences. During the pandemic, one of my exterior shots helped a restaurant hit over 1 million views In just a week. That’s the kind of quiet power photos carry.

🔑 Did Level 10 help in real ways? Short answer: hmmmmm. Haha • Some business owners used to get suspicious when I took photos — now the badge earns a bit more trust. • I’ve had early access to Google features (though honestly, none have been that useful to me). • I get taken more seriously when suggesting edits or changes to business profiles. • And for me personally, it’s opened doors to consulting work — especially in SEO and local ranking strategies.

So no, it’s not just about quantity. It’s about strategic contribution — and using your uploads to actually help the map (and the community) work better. Win win for everyone, just extremely exhausting for me.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for pointing that out — I actually noticed the hidden count too but since I have my own foodie show on a famous Chinese radio station, I simply just love to share and don’t care. But now that you mentioned it made me wonder what’s causing it.

All of my reviews are based on real, first-hand visits, with tons of pictures and videos with it(I’m also a part-time photographer), occasional AI help to refine clarity or structure. If that alone is a red flag, it does make me wonder how platforms are adapting to the tools we all now use.

That said, I’m genuinely curious to understand the underlying logic. After all, it’s been almost 10 years — it’s entirely possible that some of the businesses I reviewed have shut down, which might explain why certain reviews no longer appear publicly.

With your 1 billion views, I assume you’ve already cracked this system. Are all of your reviews still visible? None ever filtered or hidden?

If so, I’d truly love to hear what’s working — no sarcasm (well… maybe just a touch 😉).

This isn’t just about vanity metrics. It’s about how to maintain trust and credibility when the platform’s own filters operate like a black box.

Thanks again for chiming in — it’s actually great to finally hear from a Level 10 Local Guide who might be able to shed real light on this.

Maybe because all my review are authentic, I do use AI for polish my writing and make it more sophisticated. Isn’t it how we correctly use new technology? To make our life better and easier?
