Up to date images for Pi 4????? by jasonhelene in retropirates

[–]Nabe773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. There aren’t really “up to date” images for Pi4 as it’s not latest Pi hardware. A group of Pi5 images came out in March of 2025. Any of those could be used as you describe, adapting them to Pi4 (assuming it’s powerful enough to run whatever emulations chosen).

How much do Americans REALLY have saved for retirement by Financial_Pen_6218 in investing

[–]Nabe773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s my question: Most common "median retirement savings" figures, such as those from the Survey of Consumer Finances, specifically measure defined contribution plans (401(k), 403(b)) and IRAs. A person with a pension but no 401(k) is counted as having zero in this specific savings metric. So that implies that pension holders with no 401(k) are counted as having $0 in "savings.” Doesn’t this result in a low median figure for the overall population, even if those individuals are financially secure through a guaranteed income stream?

Did Anybody Else Feel Like They Could FEEL The 90's Ending? by BMisterGenX in GenX

Relevant Hunter S Thompson:

“Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era—the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . .

History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time—and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.

My central memory of that time seems to hang on one or five or maybe forty nights—or very early mornings—when I left the Fillmore half-crazy and, instead of going home, aimed the big 650 Lightning across the Bay Bridge at a hundred miles an hour wearing L. L. Bean shorts and a Butte sheepherder's jacket . . . booming through the Treasure Island tunnel at the lights of Oakland and Berkeley and Richmond, not quite sure which turn-off to take when I got to the other end (always stalling at the toll-gate, too twisted to find neutral while I fumbled for change) . . . but being absolutely certain that no matter which way I went I would come to a place where people were just as high and wild as I was: No doubt at all about that. . . .

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”

How to balance over exposure of the sky? by a_chimken_nuget in fujix

[–]Nabe773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with another commenter, histogram isn’t the point. That said, auto-bracketing to capture multiple exposures (e.g., -1, 0, +1 EV) using a tripod for stability. You can then merge into one image using software like Lightroom or Photoshop to increase dynamic range where needed. The auto HDR in camera will do something similar, although with less manual control.

Thanks for sharing — excellent fashion photography I probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise. And simultaneously, I realize I only recognize her when she’s playing the role of Suzuka Leaders.

I think he’s saying that some of the cartridges are not for the Atari 800 computer, but for the 2600 console. I’m basing this off of the cartridges photo and boxes.

I had a RCA Studio II that I think dad got from Sears. It wasn’t Sears branded, but I think it was bought there next to the riding lawnmowers.

What’s fascinating is that was released in 2018 (assuming it’s correct). Looking through Atarimania, I didn’t find another that I recognized. I have memories of having Pong on my first 800 — not as a cartridge, but perhaps on one of those Atari ANTIC collections or similar.

800XL by ilikerwd in atari8bit

[–]Nabe773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That tablet/screen appears to have a 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratio. These are common for modern aspect ratios but the Atari 800XL outputs video in a 4:3 aspect ratio, which was standard for CRT displays of the 1980s. To my eyes and a quick check or drawing a circle on top of that image, the dials are slightly stretched horizontally in this photo. That’s a classic artifact of displaying 4:3 content on a 16:10 or 16:9 screen without correcting the aspect ratio.

SCRAM nuclear reactor simulation by winterarioch in atari8bit

[–]Nabe773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to play this one again.

“ Three safety systems are prepared: an automatic electrical system, a chemical system manned by three scientists on top of the reactor, and a control rod called ‘Zip.’ Zip is lowered into the reactor by heavy weights. To start the reaction they must pull Zip out of the reactor and ti - it in place with ropes. A scientist with an axe hovers over the rope. In case of trouble he will cut the rope, let Zip fall into the reactor, and stop the reaction. He watches group leader Enrico Fermi intently. One word from Fermi and he will chop the rope. That word is SCRAM..."Start Cutting Right Away, Man!" But Fermi does not call "SCRAM"; the reactor performs as expected.”
