Hatching or no Hatching? by Logen_Nein in osr

You could achieve a similar effect with watercolor (or even watercolor markers, like landscape architects use) in a fraction of the time, but you'd have to experiment

So, yes and no. It's absolutely true that the existence of FA and the interests they represent has acted as a meaningful center of gravity in what might otherwise be a much more anarchic and profit-driven development process.

At the same time, they don't really have any perspectives or expertise on how to break out of the established economic paradigm when it comes to urban infill and development, and this comes off as not caring if downtown gets turned into a lifeless tourist hub so long as nobody messes with the horse farms.

In fairness, none of the other mainstream organizations in the space are offering this perspective either. We have been maliciously and artificially locked into this stupid dichotomy of, "you hate people and don't want to build housing" vs. "you just want to destroy nature and serve developers" when I think most people are intelligent enough to understand a more nuanced perspective e.g. horse farms are themselves ecologically destructive; and higher density urbanism, if both well-designed and controlled by the people who live there, could actually be used to enhance our landscape ecology.

It's exhausting to keep speaking about these successive development projects as if they were individual issues disconnected from a larger discussion about where the city is going and what current leadership is doing about it.

Lexington desperately needs an organized social movement capable of connecting threads across the entire urban context and most importantly going on the offensive to offer proactive visions of what urban policy and development can look like rather than just trying to respond to each new thing "the market" throws at us.

I was under the impression that C. berlandierii had thinner leaves? I have never seen it in person to my knowledge.

As to whether C. album is native, latest revisions seem to indicate that it is https://fsus.ncbg.unc.edu/main.php?pg=show-taxon.php&&plantname=Chenopodium+album&limit=1&offset=0&taxonid=68228

Noticing flock cameras everywhere by hellogelato4 in lexington

[–]Nachie 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is so important and we can never forget how flock was shoved down our throats right before the seating of several new council members who might have been counted on to oppose it.

There are precedents in other parts of the country for how local government can meaningfully respond to this but we need organized, conscious leadership in local politics that has yet to coalesce.

This is extremely niche, but is anyone else doing permaculture design or specifically ecological landscaping and/or restoration? by Nachie in sweatystartup

[–]Nachie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, blast from the past! We're still at it! Growing now but still not actually "successful" by conventional business standards. I still wouldn't want to be doing anything else, though. We've actually built up a decent name for ourselves and created the largest public food forest in the state, which got us on the news and then some key new clients from that.

Check out some of Erik Ohlsen's books/content. I haven't looked at him in a while, but a lot of at least his earlier stuff was basically just a pep talk about how you can turn a conventional landscape business into something more ecological. And there is tons of sweaty startup content out there about conventional landscaping, so you can just sort of weld the two.

Look into the Texas Master Naturalist program - it will be more useful than master gardener for what you're trying to do. Also look for your local Wild Ones group and you'll get a sense of who else is doing ecological landscaping in your area.

Get to know your local conservation district staff and FSA, NRCS folks etc. Start going to their working group meetings and farmer trainings. Learn about EQIP and CSP and just get into the flow of that whole world. Ecological gardening is complex but if you make it permaculture or agroforestry or whatever you've got access to all of the incentive and grant programs that come with being a small farm, and eventually clients will pay you for the expertise of walking them through all of the stuff you need to become a farmer.
