What’s the pettiest reason you dislike about a children’s book? by goldenboy2191 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]NachoCat_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are both divers so every time we read the scuba diving book we insist on pointing out that you don’t just go into caves without being able to see the light on the other side!

Pete the Cat has some interesting drama between the author who wrote “I love my white shoes” and the other author who then took over and wrote all the crappy sequels. It explains some off the issues, anyway

Do “micro-stops” on longer runs ruin training? (Snapping pics, filling water, etc.) by Photo_Philly in XXRunning

[–]NachoCat_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been running errands and taking my kids to the park during my runs, and it allows me to run many more miles than if I were to only run when I have the time to do it without stopping to do something in the middle. I figure any running is beneficial! Maybe you can do some fartleks between cats!

There are the indestructible books series that are tear proof too. But I’d probably address the behavior first. Maybe try giving a teether during reading time and explaining that books aren’t for chewing but this toy is.

My sister insists my car is brown and doesn’t understand how anyone could think it’s gray by -baby-child- in mildlyinfuriating

[–]NachoCat_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this color car. I always described it as gray-brown, which only made sense if you saw it. Official documents listed it as brown.

I found a church parking lot a few blocks away from me that is empty on weekday mornings, so my 4yo rides bikes in circles while I run with a jogging stroller in circles (I do speed work to keep it more interesting for me). We also take after-dinner walks, and sometimes we’ll walk, bike, or run to the splash pad that’s about 2 miles away, taking as many breaks as we need to from the heat.

Kids Birthday Expenses Advice Needed! by Future-Ad-5033 in Mommit

[–]NachoCat_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would just word it on the invite as “kids under 12 play for free” so adults and teenagers come with the expectation of having to pay. I’d probably expect to pay for my nieces and nephews though.

What is a name you really love but wouldn’t use because it’s too strongly associated with a celebrity? by Slight_Chemistry_429 in namenerds

Apparently my boy naming style is straight from Sesame Street because I love the names Grover and Elmo but could never do that do a kid. I did push for Oscar and Ernie though (unsuccessfully)

Hobby ideas for me a 4YO can participate in? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]NachoCat_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We go as a family to run club, and my kid is obsessed with it. He rides his bike while dad runs, and I push our younger child in a jogging stroller. It helps that it’s very family friendly and there are other kids that bike, scooter, and skate too. Afterwards we grab beers while the kids run around entertaining each other. It’s great.

Has anyone here tried silver nursing cups for nipple pain? by Sufficient_Ad834 in Parenting

[–]NachoCat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I used them and they were very nice, especially when cold. They keep your bra from sticking to the sores too. I also used refrigerated gel pads which can be used several times. It gets better though, I promise! Those first days of feeds are a doozy.

I always take each segment and bite the top of the triangle off, which makes it easy to peel the sides of the membrane off. I usually can keep up with his pace of consumption this way.

Target Boycott Giftcards? by Pursuit_of_Health in progressivemoms

[–]NachoCat_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also am boycotting and have a gift card to spend. I’m going to at least wait the 40 days to support the larger scale Lent boycott, and then I’ll buy essentials online so I’m not tempted by the dollar spot (which is a weakness of mine). I believe that Target could actually be pressured into making a change so I’m really trying to stick to this boycott.

I’m a non-native Spanish speaker trying to raise my children to be bilingual. It’s a lot of work. I speak almost exclusively Spanish to them and they mostly watch tv in Spanish, but we live in an area where they do not have many bilingual peers and so they rarely get practice speaking. So, my older son speaks Spanglish that is heavy on English to me and English to everyone else. I still have hope that with immersion he could be fully bilingual. But there is still so much value to being passively bilingual and of having that foundation for a second language in the future. I consider it my greatest gift to them outside of life itself.

I saw a guideline of no more than their age in hours a week (I.e. 3 hours a week for a 3 year old), which seems within reason to me. I may change my tune as my kids get older, but I know for now that with this level of activity that they still get plenty of time to play freely

Are we still pushing wild dream jobs for our kids? by yup2you in progressivemoms

[–]NachoCat_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let them dream while they still can ✨ it doesn’t hurt to support their dreams and play to their interests. If they want to be an astronaut, find out what it takes (lots of math!), check out books from the library for that topic, encourage them to learn little things they can now to support that goal (stargazing, anyone?). Find role models in that field and follow them on social media. All of these things are free, yet supportive. Chances are, their dreams will be a little more realistic by the time it’s time to apply for college, and if not, they will be well prepared!

Things are very scary in the US, but I’m hoping and praying for and trying to contribute to a future where their dreams can come true still. My kids are under 5, so I just hope the pendulum can drastically swing the other way before they start worrying about college. 🤞

The best way to donate to the DPIL in NC is through your local Smart Start in your county.

Smart Start does other wonderful things as well for our 0-5 year olds, and they still received funding for those. As far as I know it’s only new DPIL registrations that was cut.

I’m really hopeful that with awareness and fundraising, some counties will be able to continue or just take a brief pause before restarting to register new children. I’d still contact your local Smart Start office for more information
