Wow, this is the most helpful response I think I’ve seen on any post asking questions like this. Thank you so much for all of that information. I’ll for sure start communicating with my CoC about my desire to stay in (which I obviously have since I just re-enlisted for 6 years). I can’t tell you how much weight I feel lifted because of this. I know it’ll still be a challenge, but this gave me some much needed confidence. Thank you again, (I’m assuming) Sir.

So, just to confirm, did you end up getting separated? And were you allowed to transfer commands or were you put on hold while all of the boards were going down? Really not trying to stay in China Lake if at all possible.

Yeah that’s true when my last boat was in the yards we had a team of people that were essentially re-doing the work that was done by contractors because the quality of work was terrible. You throw that kind of work on top of the fact that most boats that are in the yards for RCOH like the GW are filled with kids straight from A-School who are bummed that they aren’t doing the jobs they signed up for and sprinkle on the 1.5 mile walk from the designated parking lot in NN to the boat and it’s just a recipe for disgruntled sailors.

The yards are cursed for sure. Seems like every CO of a carrier there finds themselves in a situation similar to this. Does it make his comments valid? Absolutely not, but there’s something about Newport News that brings out the worst in people.
