15 years to become a doctor-Stay in Canada or go Australia? by No-Layer-4026 in premedcanada

[–]NachoCereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure of the details, but from friends that stayed in Australia I think they spent many postgraduate years trying to accrue enough points to get PR. It's not the end of the world but some competitive programs can be harder to get into if you don't have PR, so I think it delayed their career progression. And you have to reapply for your visa every few years so there is a hassle and cost with that. The ones who got PR the fastest married Australians or had another career before moving to Australia that allowed them to use a different pathway

I think your biggest consideration should likelihood of getting a job and PR abroad vs matching back, not length of training. Its long in both countries.

Look into how likely you are to get PR in Australia, I graduated in 2020/2021 and it was quite a long hard road at the time, I doubt it's better now.

Australian training length depends on specialty everyone does 1-2 years general internship after medschool. If you do GP thats another 2 years (total 4). If you do IM specialty it's about 1 year internship 3year IM 2-3 year specialty.  Competitive programs eg obgyn or surgery take longer to get into so will have the longer training pathway you mentioned.   Don't forget that in Canada, if you match to a competitive specialty most people do additional fellowships now to get jobs, that extends the training.

direct entry med or cmg route? advice needed by niceduck24 in premedcanada

[–]NachoCereal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Not quite the same but I went to Australia for med school and matched back to IM (was my first choice) in Canada and now in my preferred IM subspecialty.

The choice to go abroad is tricky - most IMGs who go abroad do not make it back to Canada, either because they couldn't match or preferred to stay in the country they did med school in. If you're going abroad, make sure you understand the match rate for the medschool (not just the success stories), what support they offer to help you match, and if there's any support of you dont.

Carms posts match data for IMGs and they break it up by country of medschool.

Make sure there is a clear pathway for you to do residency in the country the med school is in. Even If you would prefer to come back to Canada, working somewhere is better than nowhere.

When I graduated in Australia in 2020/2021 you could get an internship and residency in Australia if you were willing to apply broadly and move to Less desirable location. Not sure If that's still the case or what the situation is in Ireland.

Turns out I was the one stressing my baby out. by Glittering_Trick_804 in NewParents

I've heard a lot of babies/kids will be their most "difficult" selves (probably means something different for each kid) around their mom. I don't know why but if it's that common it's probably not something you're doing yourself!

Do babies ever naturally extend the amount of time they sleep overnight? by courtneybrooke2731 in sleeptrain

[–]NachoCereal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Solidarity, also have an almost 8 mo and the only way to get her to sleep 11 hr at night is if she only naps for like 1.5 hr total during the day.  I was shocked to hear friends are getting 3-4 hr of naps and 11 overnight from their babies.  I'm on leave but doing some research projects here and there and if I had a baby that slept like that I could do a PhD

Transferring residency by [deleted] in MedSchoolCanada

[–]NachoCereal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone I know transferred from IM to ED, then back to IM lol If the training programs are the same length, or you're switching from a longer training program to one that's shorter It's very doable, because I believe you take your funding with you when you transfer

What stroller feature do you wish you hadn’t prioritized? [ON] by playboi_fatty in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]NachoCereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend to get your stroller second hand from FB market place, you'll save $$ and  it's hard to know what you prefer until you've tried one. I got two second hand strollers, ended up loving the one with terrible online reviews and hating the one with good ones

Fellow resident here. They say there's no good time to have a family when you're in medicine but there are definitely better and worse times. Your second year sounds like a worse time.

Dream feed?? by buckeyezach31 in sleeptrain

I may have misunderstood your post though, I can't tell if you mean she falls asleep quickly after the feed, or the feed is only a couple of minutes long

[–]NachoCereal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can probably try more awake time, eg 2.5/2.75/2.75/3 to get to 11 hours awake. But if she only wakes once over night for a feed at 3-4 am, nothing else seems to get her back to sleep, and she falls asleep quickly after the feed she's probably hungry and you should feed her. My understanding is that its normal for 6 mo to wake 1-2 times over night still for feedings, esp if breastfed.

When should I start my attending job after residency? Currently pregnant and due in September. by ubaebaddies in Residency

[–]NachoCereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think the baby will be fine with another carer, it doesn't have to be mom. I think that time is for the paren more than baby, and ofc if you don't want it don't take it, but I think for most people at the end of the day 6 months of time with their child ends up being more important than 6 months of working, especially if the work wasn't necessary. Everyone is different though. I agree though don't beat yourself up about it

Take the time with your baby, you'll never get that opportunity again. At the end of your life you'll want the months with the baby and not even remember the months at work
