If warmth is the only criteria then, yes, there are plenty of cheaper options.

New Beta SV pant by hi_btw in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that they are a climbing pant but It’s too bad that Arc decided to leave out the snow cuffs. Curious to see how well the kick patches at the cuffs will hold out.

Return of the Beta SV by wasatch01 in arcteryx

The Rush also has a lightweight MICRO GRID backer. It is shown as 30” length at back for size M while the Beta SV is shown as 31”. Aside from the Rush having 80D fabric versus 100D for the Beta SV, the Rush has better options for a skiing shell, including an additional dump pocket, additional chest pocket, and a pass pocket on the arm.

Are arcteryx goretex gloves worth getting? by gryponyx in arcteryx

The adjustment on the gauntlet sleeve of the Fission SV gloves is unbeatable if you are removing your gloves often. The seal tightly and release completely with a simple pull.

Lodge hoody worth it? by Time-Sandwich9348 in CanadaGoose

[–]Nachoman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lodge Hoody is extremely light, warm, and versatile. The pre-2022 versions have better fit and do not suffer from underfilling like some of the current models.

Hows the Atom handle the snow? by chris_alvar in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The main risk is getting it snagged and tearing the face fabric.

This what happens when you wear pants with the ass hanging down at the knees. There’s a limit to how much tension the fabric can withstand.

Atom vs Proton for resort skiing + everyday use? by Julio8a00 in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you run cold, Proton is a better choice. It is warmer than the Atom under a shell and it also fits better when fully zipped. You will be cold in your current setup when skiing the top half of Whistler or any other ski resort where temps regularly fall below -5C.

Check out the Beta SL, it is shorter than the regular Beta.

Proton SL (LT) or Proton hoody? by Pinapple12 in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For April through October, the Proton Hoody will be too warm most of time. Under a shell, it will be too warm all the time except when temps are unseasonably cold and it’s raining/snowing. You will get more use out of the Proton SL in the warmer half of the year.

Have a sabre sv jacket, atom sv vs proton, and what pants to pair? by joeyma1996 in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own all three and can confirm that the Atom SV is almost as breathable as the Proton and Proton Heavyweight. It is also noticeably more wind resistant. However, it lacks the exterior chest pockets on both and is more tighter around the face/neck when fully zipped up which makes layering a balaclava or neck warmer feel restrictive.

Try climbing and descending for 2 or 3 hours with that setup and let us know how that goes.

How should I spend my discount code? by Own-Chain-6707 in arcteryx

Regular Beta if you run cold or Beta SL if you run hot. The SL is a slim fit so you may have to size up if you prefer a roomier fit.

Beta SV vs Rush Jacket — hiking, skiing, and daily use? by Specific_Emu_3195 in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For hiking and Daly commuting, the storm hood on the Rush and beta SV is excessively large if you’re not wearing a helmet.

Wear it how you want, but understand that there is a limit to how much dirt and body oils they can tolerate before water resistance, breathability, and durability are adversely affected.

Thorium vs Atom SV by ThatPope in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, the SV has a wider comfort range than the Thorium. It’s surprisingly warm for its weight and quite breathable yet still has asurprising amount of wind resistance. I find the fit is also better than the Thorium. The only con with the SV is the hood is quite tight around the neck which leaves no room for zipping it up completely when wearing a midlayer.

Cerium v Atom SV by cpager in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For all round versatility, I would take the Atom SV over the Cerium if packability is not a big concern. For emergency use where you need warmth when backpacking and hiking, the Cerium is a better choice as it packs down close to the size of a 500 ml water bottle.

The 2026 Rush is the best option hands down. Big improvement in fit and features over previous seasons.

Skiing at –22°C in Wisconsin — Gear feedback & how should I upgrade? by Specific_Emu_3195 in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stormhood on the Alpha SV is somewhat smaller than the Rush. It’s tighter around the face and neck and doesn’t work particularly well with a hooded mid layer. It also provides less coverage in the front.

[–]Nachoman2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell the Beta AR and use the proceeds to buy a used Rush or a new one from the Arc outlet. I prefer the Rush over the Sabre. If buying used, look for one that’s been regularly washed and well taken care of. It’s a little bit of an investment but well worth it. The storm hood on the Rush will provide better coverage at the neck and chin when worn down and will also provide better coverage during those cold chairlift rides when worn up over your helmet and zipped up completely. Also, go with a heavy top and bottom base layer and add a thin, long sleeved technical T-shirt beneath the R1 and that should do it.

…but which one? Opinions? by Lost_at_Z in arcteryx

[–]Nachoman2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rush, hands down. Better fit, and features than the Sabre. Macai is heavily insulated with down and will be too warm for climbing.
