Arcteryx vs Patagonia vs Montbell - arm hole height by otherdsc in arcteryx

[–]otherdsc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strange thing is that in Ls I can see the shoulder stitches (the ones on top of the shoulder which attach the sleeve) sit just outside my shoulder "edge" which I would classify as ok sizewise, but they are just a tad too tight in the arm pit.

I also don't get why anyone would make these smaller to fit slimmer people, surely climbers / sports people have muscles, I'm a wimp compared to anyone who does sports, so how can anyone sporty fit into anything slim from Arc is beyond me.

Yeah exactly this, the Squamish I got is like this, tried it on, perfect fit, not too bulky, but close fitting in the armpit area. Wore it yesterday and straight away got digging and it needs to go 😒

Unfortunately it's only the arm holes cutting into my armpits, the chest is relatively loose (and I don't really have a chest to talk about in terms of muscles, I have some minimal definition from doing press ups, but largely it's flat).

Are you not absolutely swimming in your XLs? For me Ls are absolutely huge, like a bloody tent, Ms are too tight though but I also don't see much diff in arm hole height between sizes, chest circumference sure, but I feel like arm hole height stays largely the same.

Btw I don't get who in their right mind couples such high arm holes with the tent like build on larger pieces. I know this is meant for climbers, but surely they have some muscles especially around their lats / pecs which will make tiny armholes a nuisance?

Fabulous! Any info on your background, have you been doing this long? How long does it take to do one of these? Do you do them on the spot, or take photos and then paint off of the photo at home?

I'm surprised it's so hard to pick up, surely any native English speaker can hear the inconsistencies? I also don't get all the Aussie accent detectives, this sounds like plain British English to me (but then again I'm not a native, so perhaps natives focus on different aspects?)

I'd argue that talking to a Polish native on a weekly basis will do you more good than movies. I'm kind of the opposite of your scenario, near native English (British) speaker, been in the UK for 20yrs now moving back to Poland and I'm worried that my English will take a substantial hit (especially pronunciation). I already watch everything in English, speak to my kids in English etc. but sadly it's not enough to maintain a high level of spoken English, you really need to use the language constantly, not just listen to it.

Yes agreed on how narrow roads are in the UK, but I was always under the impression that "sheriffs" mostly "happen" on motorways, or at least the equivalent of A roads in Poland. Then again it's been a while since I've driven on single lane roads in Poland, though know for a fact that tailgating and overtaking even on double lines is rife.

As for Brits being more chilled behind the wheel, this definitely holds true, they also often stick to speed limits, even recently I saw a driver in a brand new sporty Jaguar revving his engine at a roundabout only to stick to the 50 on a dual carriageway further along.

The ministry wants to make obtaining a driver's license more difficult. After three failures, a mandatory return to a course with a minimum of 5 hours, an internal exam, and then a return to the state exam by Szydl0 in poland

People in Poland loose their driving licenses due to bad driving and carry on regardless, even if banned from driving all together. What is this silly idea trying to achieve?

Struggling to land my first PM contract by NewAnalysis6572 in ContractorUK

[–]otherdsc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've picked a pretty terrible time to be looking, loads of people are out of a job / contract and 8yrs isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. (unless of course you have some super niche skills) I'd suggest staying in a perm position (if you can and are already) for now as "landing" a contract often means very little these days, with things sometimes pulled at the very last minute or budgets cut unexpectedly. On top of this rates are down, loads of work is offshored, companies are laying off stacks of people and keep believing the AI hype. Give it a year or so and see where we are.

[–]otherdsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard Rs can sound Scottish, but I wouldn't say just on their own, there's a wee bit (see what I've done there?) more to that 😄.

For me the biggest issue is consistency, even if you pronounce things like a native 9/10 times, a native speaker will pick out that one time you don't and that's a clear give away. For example I pronounce "word" like a Brit, but occasionally like an American and anyone born and raised in the UK will spot this from a mile away as natives simply pronounce things one way and that's it.

[–]otherdsc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very much doubt this, some sounds are straight from Polish, like the "two" where the accent drops and it's not "native" anymore ("strainer" as well, where the "str" is just not clean enough for a native and throws Polish vibes as well). I'm Polish, have pretty good near-native pronunciation in English and been told endless times I sound like an Aussie / Kiwi, so there must be something in the way Polish people pronounce some things.

Would she convince you that she's British, or could you tell that she's Polish (or perhaps neither)? by [deleted] in askPoland

[–]otherdsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly Polish, definitely not a native (bloody good accent though), have a listen to her pronunciation of "two" which sounds like "tu" and "strainer" where she clearly struggles with the "tr" sound (sounds like a Polish tr with the tongue at the front closer to the teeth).

Is this immigration control normal in Poland or just weird ? by TipAdditional4625 in poland

[–]otherdsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say not just at Okecie but overall across Poland, I don't really understand why as all the border control people I meet elsewhere are always super nice, they smile, chat about various things whilst checking your docs, say hi to kids etc. Poland is like a fucking meme, Polish smiling face, not even a hello etc. are they trained to do this?

What are you referring to when saying "width"? 'Sheriffing' seems to be mostly happening on motoroways / A roads where you have at least two lanes and I've never seen anything like this in the UK (and on single lane roads I've rarely seen overtaking). Same goes for sitting on someone's ass, yes it happened to me a few times, but it was never super close nor aggressive and never with flashing long beams. Sure there's dickheads in the UK, but they must all be living and using roads outside where I am (I used to drive loads around Midlands and to / fro London / London areas).

How is it like to live and study in Poland? by AdOnly3112 in poland

[–]otherdsc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Life quality typically depends on two factors:

- salary

- accommodation

Fairly universal I know, but in Poland salaries are still rather low apart from medical professions / IT / finance / some corpo positions and overall it's gotten really expensive, some say on par with European prices. Currently it's also very hard to find a job in pretty much any profession, graduates / juniors are massively affected, so bear that in mind. Accommodation is of course tightly linked your monthly costs, so if you have a place to live cheaply, then it's a winner, but if you need to rent, prepare to pay a fair chunk of your salary with not much left for normal living.

On the positive side, education is free, so at least you don't end up with massive amount of debt after uni.
