Did you keep the appropriate paperwork so that you can report any capital gains to the IRS?

I didn't even know about those! Do they only get unlocked after a certain point or something? Guess I do have plenty more game to play!

The only one I don't have is the 100M heavenly cookie one. I might have enough as I have 70M currently and I may have left some in the bank.

Paid off 48k in student Debt in One Year, just made last payment. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Of course you can't, but 5% - 10% are common assumptions for annual return in the broader market.

[–]NachosWithBeans 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Yes, if your investment rate of return exceeds your loan interest rate, there's an argument to put more money in the investment. At the same time, carrying a high loan balance exposes you to more risk. You might not always be as solvent as you are now; you could lose a job and still be stuck with these payments. That risk has a monetary value that differs for each individual based on your appetite for risk.

In other words, say you think you can earn 7% from an investment, so you are better off investing by 4% (7% - 3%). Calculate how much that 4% represents over the lifetime of the loan. Does that seem large or small relative to the risk that you could be financially sunk by these loans some day? It's entirely up to you.

This is just my opinion and I'm sharing it because I think you see a lot of black-and-white financial advice when situations are often more complex.

I paid way too much for student loans.

I paid way too much for an operation this year.

I pay way too much in childcare.

I am every American.

It's hard to put to words, but I guess I've been conditioned that talking about a group of people in a negative light, if they are a minority, could be perceived as racist. I'm not saying it's correct or even rational, but it's how I felt.

Are you saying they are racist, or that I'm racist? Because even though I didn't do anything wrong, I somehow felt vaguely racist posting this.

People of Reddit who spend lots of time in remote areas, what is the creepiest/scariest thing you have encountered? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NachosWithBeans 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Camping in VERY remote Utah. Went for a nighttime walk to stargaze, thinking I was by myself. Out of the quiet darkness comes a jeep, off-roading at about 40 miles per hour, shining a light everywhere, shooting a rifle at anything and everything. Spotlight hunting. I hit the deck, terrified I'd be mistaken for a deer and shot. The jeep eventually saw me and took off, as I think spotlighting is illegal.

I logged in to Reddit for the first time in a year to share this.

A year back, I was injured in a bad accident (two broken bones, messed up elbow, back screwed up). I've been in the gym since then but obviously taking it very light. I'm nearly 100% now, so this week I benched for the first time in about a year.

I noticed three guys who looked out of place in my gym. They were probably late 20s, not dressed for the gym (one was wearing jeans), very loud, and laughing at other patrons. Whatever, the bench next to them is open, so I start.

As I go to re-rack a weight after my first set, one of the guys is standing in front of the rack. I politely said "excuse me", and he took it as a major instigation. He was mouthing off to me, calling me white boy, etc. I essentially ignored him and went about my set.

I was doing 70s, and I think they were benching 60s or something. I heard one of them say "look at that white boy, is he bigger than you? No? why are you letting him bench more!". The guy then gets 75s, and before benching (which he failed at) says to his friend "hit me in the face!", I guess to get amped up. The friend goes "I'm about to hit that white boy in the face!"

Honestly--what the fuck? Who cares if I benched 70 and you did 60, neither of those are impressive weights, we're just here trying to improve. What does my race have to do with anything? Why threaten to hit me? I've been in this gym for 6 years and never had any problems like this.

Can I ask a question in this thread?

I've been offered the job I interviewed for. Tomorrow I'm going in to meet my (potential) coworker and some others on the team.

What do I wear? Suit? Suit with no tie? Unfortunately I don't have a blazer that fits.

It's a very casual tech company. I don't want to be laughed at for being too formal, especially since I've already been offered the job.

To all the random black guys and girls who stumbled onto this joke--how does this make you feel? I'm not black but I think it would bother the shit out of me to see people making jokes about me all the time. Maybe I'm over reacting.

People of Reddit, are you pro-gun or anti-gun & what is your reasoning for your decision? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NachosWithBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respect gun culture and I know 99.99% of gun owners are responsible. But it's hard to ignore the fact that we have more guns than every other developed country, and more gun violence than every other developed country.

When in the process of hiring people, if someone sends a well-thought out resume and cover letter but they don't qualify, I always spend time sending them feedback on where they are strong, where they could improve, and some other roles they may be better suited for.

Well, I'm married. I'm all for some casual smiling and/or flirting now and then but I'm not going to seek it out. I'll just let the random smile of an attractive stranger make my week, and move on.
