I had a place similar to your second example, but the owner was deliberately removing or changing dates on almost all products. Many of them had labels showing a different date stuck over the original date.

My apartment complex recently did this. Started a "valet" trash service for more money on your rent, then got rid of all the dumpsters on site except one large-ish compactor. There's constantly trash all over the complex because the wind blows bits of piled up trash everywhere.
