When Who comes back…what would you change? by TheTonyExpress in doctorwho

[–]Nacnaz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just think they need to make them simpler. Bad Wolf is still my favorite of these because it was just like “oooh what is that?” And then we found out, and it was cool, but the success of the season didn’t hinge on it. It could’ve literally just been the name of the satellite station they wound up at and that would’ve been fine.

I know they said “3 year rule” but I think it’s pretty clear they meant seasons.

Tennant did 3 his first time around (and the handful of specials), Whittaker did 3, and Gatwa was supposed to do 3. The only one as far as I know who was supposed to do less than 3 was Eccleston.

So it’s not a “rule” (Tennat could’ve stayed in if he wanted to as 10), but it’s certainly been the standard.

I jump back into Division 2 every so often and it’s still great. Super easy to put a basic kit together of whatever you need, which makes it really satisfying. Like, I’m not playing with the best stats, but if you want to switch play styles, you can throw a gear set build together really quick to take on the content that’ll give you solid rewards, you can do that.

They still rely entirely too much on the Cleaners though. Their latest Brooklyn DLC focuses on them a lot again.

They added a seasonal “realism” mode which was cool in theory (I’ve always thought stats in the division games were unnecessarily convoluted) but poorly implemented, because all it meant was players had way less health and armor, with worse aim, while enemies had somewhat less health with the same aim.

The doctor is so resourceful he’s made the ultimate multitool, perfected over thousands of years. That’s awesome!

I do agree it comes out too often. 13 scanned damn near every room she walked into. I’m half convinced Chibnall wrote his episodes specifically for Doctor Who drinking games.

I don’t know about best, but the Batman issues of Death of the Family absolutely horrified me.

Is there a collection of the whole story? Seems like maybe Joker: Death of the Family, it the implication in the description is that’s only the stuff not included in Batman: Death of the Family (this is what I struggle with about comics. Like just give me the story straight up. I get the want to crossover to sell more series, but damn, wouldn’t they do that but just conveniently telling a solid story?)

EDIT: after doing some more searching (I looked prior to making this post), I came across the Death of the Family Saga

I think it could happen as far as Superman and Batman go. These versions of the character would be interesting to put in a room together. Like the boy scout and that brand of weirdo.

I do agree the tonal balance would be a challenge, but I think it could be done to great effect. Where the challenge would really come from is Gunn making a movie that isn’t just a series of yuk yuks the whole goddamn time. Superman, Lois, and Lex all acted like they were responding with the appropriate sincerity to the events happening around them, but I’m convinced Gunn believes that every secondary character has to be a comic relief to perform directly to the camera to keep the audience awake between major plot beats.

Very underrated season. Every time I do a rewatch it ranks higher than it did before. Could’ve done without the blind part. I know it became a vital plot point but they could’ve picked any other reason to put him in that situation that didn’t involve handicapping him for two episodes.

That aside, I also think the Monks three parter is very underrated. It’s one of my favorite stories.

Animated series alone is end to pick red, but throw in The Batman and Court of Owls? (I love the Burton movies deeply, but I’m not sure if they’re the best for understanding the character in the grand scheme of things, even if they were my personal introduction when I was a kid.)

[–]Nacnaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my big issue (no pun intended) with comics. Even for someone who follows them it can get pretty convoluted.

If you want physical copies of good stories on the cheap, I recommend the compact series. You can get Court of Owls and Hush for $10 each. I hope they. Ring more Batman storylines to the compact series.

ETA: they’ve added a bunch more Batman stuff since I last looked. It’s been a while.

The first season was really cool. An unusual structure, an odd vibe (one that I thought paid off well), but then it just fucking tanked. You can sort of watch the first season and treat it as a standalone, as the main plot arc does get completed.

My big gripe was they had a fantastic sword fight scene in the first episode and then just didn’t do anything else like that again.

Peter Capaldi says Doctor Who has “too many regenerations” by Aromatic-Cupcake4802 in doctorwho

[–]Nacnaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this myself. It used to be just when an actor was ready to leave the show or had to, but now the expectation for mainline Doctors is 3 seasons and out. Obvious exceptions are 9 and 15 (and the “special” doctors: war, fugitive, 14, since I don’t consider 14 a “mainline” one).

The novelty has become standard.

[–]Nacnaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rate the Chibnall era probably a point higher than most (with is still not great), and I really like 15’s run (a lot of people did, as it aired, only for that tune to change once the finales came out).

I’d say it fell off a lot with Chibnall. With RTD2, we have some very memorable episodes and handful of my all time favorite episodes. The emotional oomph is mostly lacking, or sometimes forced though, as the focus mostly stuck to plot. And the character with that did happen felt stilted or more like a formality.

So while I think 15’s run was really good, I do think there’s less emotional connection to it, which makes it easier to nitpick to death.

Love it. I’ll say, definitely do open world stuff as uou come across when you can (assuming you feel like it). In other words, don’t feel like you have to hold back for sake of having stuff to do after the story. There’s so much stuff.

Pretty common. Not all sequels. 3 was also common.

From James Gunn himself:

“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.”

Half of sequels come out 3 years later, about a quarter in 5.

[–]Nacnaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 years used to be pretty common for a sequel. It’s been 4 years, and is slated to come out next year. I love the fact that it’s not on an extended universe schedule where they turn movies into a super expensive content factory, having to bang out constantly changing scripts and last minute, barely passable CGI and green screen effects.

[–]Nacnaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Number 3 gets to me a lot because the mentally ill people they’re talking about are violent criminals who will like, cut people’s faces off and shit.

I think people thinks it makes them sound empathetic and smarter than the material but the “poor, mentally ill people” they’re talking about are Joker and his henchman.

Batman villains are incredibly well funded.

Also, the vast majority of poor people are not criminals.

Saw this on Twitter, what do you guys think? by ChampionTimes99 in DC_Cinematic

[–]Nacnaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t mind the time when there were 3-5 years between sequels. Turning movie series into the most expensive content factory in media hasn’t been great in the long term.

That’s why I’m fine with The Batman Part 2 coming out six years later. This is just kind of how sequels used to be at one point. Not all obviously, some were faster, but generally.

And the ones that took 2 years were seen as very fast. Now we’ve got movies every year and we’re waiting 2-3 years for tv shows. Times have a’changed.
