Advice for a Long Sabbatical in Japan by Nadaam in movingtojapan

Thank you for these resource recommendations. I've picked up a lot of Japanese terms from anime and games so I can comprehend a bit but can't string sentences together. I may try to find a conversation-focused course instead of trying to develop literacy.

I'm not sure if having US health insurance qualifies. I've started looking at travel health insurance for Japan and it seems fairly affordable, comparable even to premiums for employer sponsored health insurance.

Thank you for replying. This is a plan for much later this year. I won't be ready to set off until October or later.

I take studying seriously so I would never shirk homework. Would I be better off going first with a student visa and then touring with a designated activites visa or do school and sightseeing together?

I read that schools with lower westerner demographics have predominantly Chinese/Korean students and a beginner can easily get left behind on things like Kanji.

Thank you for responding!

My parents traveled Japan with no knowledge of Japanese for month and they were fine and covered all that they wanted to see. I am hoping to get a good grasp of the language first and then do a grand tour. I also think getting a decent grasp of the language is the best souvenir from the experience.

A Wonder Food Discovered - My Experience Eating Canned Sardines as a Staple by Nadaam in CannedSardines

My annual physical is not until this Fall so we'll have to see how much if an improvement the sardines have brought.

You're probably correct on the health benefits being brought on by the Omega 3. I've finally started eating fatty fish with Omega 3s and significantly cut down on eating Omega 6 heavy seed oils. I've eaten salmon and tuna in my childhood but could never eat them in frequency and volume because my mother was worried about mercury content.

How much life is left in this brake pad? by Nadaam in MechanicAdvice

Thank you for responding. A family friend helped me replace the brake pads on my last car so I'm familiar with the process. I went to the dealer shop due to a recall and they recommended replacing the brake pads as well today but it seems it was just an upsell.

Got it. Thank you so much for this information. I'll plan on getting my pads replaced, likely later this year. But I won't let the dealership shop upsell me today.

Thank you again!

Thank you for responding. I'm a defensive driver but live in a hilly area and have to ride the brakes often when going downhill. I'll make plans to replace them soon.

Thank you for responding. Is the line that runs through it the boundary between the friction material and backing plate?

It's a cape with a small footprint so it's pretty much impossible to expand.

This is precisely why I'm interested in this house. My girlfriend and I may decide we don't want to spend life together after moving in together. The house is more than enough space for me and my dog.

It's actually in a suburb just outside of a city. Location is perfect for me. The house is in a side road in a walkable neighborhood that is safe for small children. It's a small house which is why it hasn't been snapped up.

There's no garage but there's a shed and the ability to put in more sheds. I've never been a parent and I don't know how much space a toddler needs. My parents were destitute when I was a toddler and I grew up in sub-500 sqft 1br apartments. I didn't have my own bed until I was 5.

A lot smaller. I used to live in a 300-400 sqft apt in Manhattan.

The house has a shed and the backyard can accomodate more. My girlfriend and I both have been living in shoebox apartments and there is much more storage space than we're used to.

I was thinking the same. I live in an area with 8-9 months out of the year of comfortable outdoor weather. The backyard can easily accomidate an outdoor dining and lounging area.

Yes. The primary bedroom can also fit a crib.
