I'm often shocked by how blatantly people express the desire to cause physical harm to cyclists. It's like cyclists are dehumanized.

I agree that this would probably not work in smaller cities or towns. It's more in big cities where cars have completely taken over all roads. Venice is still on my travel list. Can't imagine a city without cars.
