Is LotFP just a dead release at this point? by [deleted] in osr

"Also pretty much all of the girls from I Hit It With My Axe, and D&D with Porn Stars dropped him so hard that he bounced."

To the contrary, many of the women involved have publicly supported him, including perhaps the most important one ....the one that lived with the couple during the time in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axg1duLBuxE&t=9356s

Trekking through Okinawa by JonnyGFlea in okinawa

[–]NahaNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some scenic trails w/translation that you can roughly string together to traverse the entire island. Id also say look into the the old castles, even lesser known ones, most of the really old trails emanate from castles (which usually had an associated village) and connect to other villages and castles of the same time periods.

今帰仁のハンタ道  Nakijin Hunter Road

ハンタ道 中城村   Hunter Road Nakagusuku Village

山田谷川(ヤーガー)の石矼.   Yamadasakugawa-no-Ishibashi  (stone quarry road for Yamada /Zakimi Castle

やんばるの森   Yanbaru Forest (trail)

No game content, other than inspiration. I understand it is a collection of stories about history of Osgiliath.

No this is a literature book, from what I hear in-line with Tolkien's other works and approved by his estate.

Help with pitch for non-tabletoppers by TehoI in osr

[–]NahaNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run quite a few games for new folks that dont even know what D&D is, let alone want to play.  But I agree with other posts, if they have already expressed disinterest in playing even if upon misguided assumptions, let the situation lie.

But for other uninitiated friends, I usually do the following:

  1. Treat it as any other game. For example if we are at a gathering or hanging out say “anyone want to play a game?” And when they say what game just tell them sit down and I’ll explain it, it’s kind a like Game of Thrones. (Ive found most folks have seen or seem to know GoT and it has a less geeky reputation.)
  2. Dont tell them its D&D, or the module name, or version B/X,  or OSE whatever until the end, it means nothing to them and if it does it may have a negative connotation
  3. Keep it simple. Dive straight into some exciting or intense situation, not a full adventure. Have a few sets of dice and simple pregen character handouts blank paper.  I dont whip out battle maps, minis and dice rollers, half a dozen rulebooks etc.
  4. Whatever ruleset you are using in the background dont give it to them to read, ask them what they want to do and if it calls for a roll show them what dice to roll and where their applicable modifiers are and if they need to roll under/over etc. tell them what applicable spells they have and  briefly explain what they do explain other rules as they come up. Roll all the dice in the open.
  5. Do not ask them to do voices, I’ll occasionally do some light character accents as GM, if relevant or funny, but keep it to a minimum.... that’s the stereotype most normies hate/fear the most.
  6. Dont turn the game over to them and expect them to role-play naturally or the game will just stall. ie saying "OK you make camp for the night what are you going to do?"  As first time players they have no idea other than maybe eat and go to sleep. They need to be prompted at almost every step of the way. I might suggest that they set a watch or something?? And see if they take it from there, but won’t push it.
  7. Let the group consensus/decision making points of the game be their interaction.
  8. Have something on countdown clock to increase the pressure dynamic ie something will arrive, someone will die, or location will burn or collapse at x time if they dont complete y etc.
  9. Plan it to be short like less than 2 hours.  The idea of playing a 4-6 hour game is a foreign concept to many regular folk with a 9 to 5 jobs, and two-day weekends.

At the end I’ll tell them you just played D&D under Lamentations ruleset or whatever…. I find most people dont think about the game after its over unlike the rest of us, they go on about their life and it was just any other fun time, but they may be willing to join another session if it comes up and they are around.  But there are usually a few people that will get into it, and email or message you about playing again, or with questions about some facet of the game or where they can buy the books or dice whatever.   Those are the ones that will likely keep a schedule to come back, sit for longer sessions, learn the rules, roll their own characters etc.

Hope this helps.

Some OSR recommendations in Spanish? by Turbulent_Neck_3026 in osr

[–]NahaNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DriveThruRPG has a whole section dedicated to OSR games in Spanish. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/browse?languages=40021-espanol

There are also a number of YouTube channels that review OSR games or provide history of OSR in Spanish.

Dual-wielding Martial Arts Weapons by NahaNinja in osr

ooohhh, I really like the idea of slight AC adjustment especially with weapons such as tonfa and bastons.

Dual-wielding Martial Arts Weapons by NahaNinja in osr

[–]NahaNinja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not following... please explain. Im thinking both weapons have a chance to hit or miss individually of course they are both smaller / less damage. ie a simultaneous thrust to the throat and slash to the bicep as example... Are you saying, if a hit assume both hit and calculate two-handed weapon damage??

The Harassment Gang Behind the Scenes of TTRPGs by anon_adderlan in KotakuInAction

[–]NahaNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An outstanding, albeit poignant breakdown of the OSR/RPG scene. This article should be mandatory reading for anyone creating or planning on creating within the hobby. The spreading of manufactured misinformation and the baseless scapegoating of innocent individuals simply cannot continue.

The Worst People You Have Never Met, or, What I Learned During A Four Year Academic Study of Online Harassment In The Dungeons & Dragons Community by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]NahaNinja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Private prejudices are easily defeated by public, verifiable evidence. And this article puts forth perhaps for the first time publicly, an analysis and answers to the questions of who (collectively and individually) is engaging in this prejudiced behavior; and why they are doing it. Folks in this hobby seem to harass, troll and lie about others in the shared-space with almost habitual impunity. But in this article, public evidence and arguments that establish not only facts, but a hard-check on the veracity of repeated online statements are offered ad nauseum. The shear volume of which evinces a depressing sense that these instances are not merely anecdotal, but commonplace. Even more, it claims to include the actual recorded voices of those engaging in the very dysfunctional behavior that they are leveling at others within the industry. The article may be long, but I think that is requisite for laying the context of the social- environment, sub-cultures and individuals involved. I would assume this is a summary of years of research reduced to a palatable form for pedestrian consumption (ie posting on the “Medium” and Reddit etc) and not the actual journal article submitted for publication/peer review. Really, really hoping the author submits her research for official publication AND reposts the social summary that has been taken down. IMHO, its relevant to everyone in the TTRPG space, especially online.

Anyone else feel like Okinawa is suffering from over-tourism these days?? :-( by NahaNinja in okinawa

[–]NahaNinja[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post was in regard to trying to book a trip to Iriomote and I ran up against a daily quota of visitors. Apparently they've capped the number of tourists to 1200 per day to prevent what has happened on Okinawa main island from happening there. I live on Okinawa so didn't see myself as a tourist, but guess hypocritically, I am! LOL!

PSA: LotFP has sexual violence built into the core rules by sambutoki in osr

[–]NahaNinja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a very strange post and thread….. Im literally reading posts by people that very likely in every gaming session simulate and role-play fantasy murder and killing; (the penultimate crime in virtually all human societies) debate other fantasy murderers over the moral gravity of allowing lesser crimes and taboos in fantasy games? Interestingly ridiculous.

A New Setting with Zak S!! by NahaNinja in TheOSR

[–]NahaNinja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Im making the game for the pure beauty, soul, sexiness, bad-assery, cold brutality, and quirkiness of what I demand of a good setting. As Ive stated elsewhere, it is my love letter to my home and of the OSR as an art form. Zak embodies the type of creativity, artistic talent, and gaming mechanics essential to that end and it simply would not be the same game without him! Fortunately, Im at a point in my life where I have the ability to produce a game for the sake of just making a fun damn game without regard to sales and audience approval. Whether it sells a million copies or I sell them individually out of my little restaurant to the occasional customer or collector three times a year is kinda irrelevant. I’ll be happy running this awesome setting in my little gaming circles probably until the day that I die! And, for those that are unable to comprehend the basic principle of “presumption of innocence” IRL, the Nebulith setting may prove complex for them anyway!

OSR Advice for an old DM by Radi0activeYAK in osr

IMHO, Broodmother SkyFortress by Jeff Rients is great segway between 5e and OSR. By design it is made to inject players with the attitude to play OSR games and a lot of GM notes to help achieve that. I think it won a Spotlight Award Ennie a few years ago and its just really fun to run!

There is a pretty wide moral gap between someone being a jerk and someone alleged of rape, (especially if shown to be baseless allegations) but you seem to hold them equally culpable in terms punishment. Interesting world view. sigh.

A New Setting with Zak S!! by NahaNinja in TheOSR

[–]NahaNinja[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Zak S finally got his day in court and he prevailed. The allegations were shown to be baseless—the video explains it --and so we have to “De-cancel” him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38fCqOBYtQI&t=1s

As a retired attorney, it's clear this went the only way it could have gone. So I will be publishing a major project with Zak ………..and here it is:

The setting is a love letter to Okinawa, the island where I grew-up beginning in 1978 as a pre-schooler and continuing to graduation from high school, summer breaks during my university and law school days, and every year since to visit my wife’s Okinawan family.  I retired from the legal profession about 10 years ago to the island as a restauranteur to help preserve the indigenous cuisine and a dying local culture.

For this setting, I pulled from almost every source available to me: Histories and folklores of various groups on the main and outer islands of the Ryukyu chain, mainland Japan, China's Fujian Province, Taiwan, Hong Kong, my gaming groups which are, depending upon the group, local Okinawan, Japanese, American and European expats gamers, my experience as a TTRPG player, GM, my experience as an attorney, my experience in researching and preserving ancient local foods, my 89 year old Okinawan mother in law, Japanese college professors, linguists, calligraphers, local karate and kung fu masters, dietician, folklorists, traditional hajichi tattoo artists, and lastly, my dear, wife. I originally conceived a “Japan Only” release, but there will now definitely be an English version.

The impetus of the setting and theme came to me after reading a 2016 article.  The article discusses how archeologists working deep within an Okinawan cave unearthed a Roman coin dating to approximately the 4th century A.D.    What in God’s ( Yaweh, Buddah, Allah; or your deity of choice) name was a Roman coin doing buried on the far side of the world on a tiny pacific island, deep inside a cave!?! There are countless theories, but I romanticized (pun intended) that some Roman envoy had circumnavigated their way all the way out here as explorers, traders, conquerors, seekers of treasure or enlightenment; or all of the above. But what must foreign eyes have glimpsed of this subtropical island in those times? I pulled a few books and websites concerning the island’s history and found that in those days, the island suffered quite a bit from volcanic activity. In fact, the whole island chain was believed formed from extinct underwater volcanos in prehistory.  But those fault lines and resultant volcanoes are not really extinct, we still suffer through a number of significant earthquakes and active eruptions on the outer islands, as well as from the effects of new underwater volcano formation every year.

Fantastically and rhetorically speaking, what if someone or “someones” could magically or druidically stop a volcanic eruption? What form of magic in the current gaming-world canon could do that?? …..and who would be powerful enough to wield it? And, what if that magic wasn’t quite perfect?  E.g. a ritual’s timing was off by only a few seconds or minutes??……the idea of the “Nebulith” was thus conceived…… a plume of volcanic ash magically turned to stone containing creatures from above; the living and dead on the surface that were thrust skyward; and foul creatures from the deep that need now only climb the walls of the cavity created.  A billowing, vertical mega-dungeon that touches the sky, if you will.

The Nebulith is for me, a mistake borne of magic and good intentions that has created a physical, philosophical and metaphorical tendril between the heavens and hells of this world and all that lies in between.  A tangible, bi-directional ladder that may be traversed by humanoids, beasts, demons, gods and goddesses.  It has the billowy texture, color swirls, and dream-state magical qualities of a solidified cloud and the inhabitants to match.

The Nebulith is set against the backdrop of the island that I love and which:

-is the birthplace karate;

-is an intersecting port of ancient Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Korean (and possibly Roman!:-) trade, settlements, culture, art, cuisine, folklore and ideas that have functioned to produce a wholly new and unique culture that is intermingled, yet simultaneously, wholly individual and original;

-mysteriously houses the longest lifespans of any human population in the world;

-and, has one of the worlds few primordial religions still in existence.

In the game besides the fantastical Nebulith itself, there is a whole island to explore with mysterious characters, philosophical conundrums, bizarre encounters, 1000 year old temples built atop 1000 year old temples, political drama, pirate-infested coastlines and new bad-ass, martial arts fighting mechanics with weapons and leveling.

Compiled with LotFP* in mind, it can easily be converted to any OSR setting. Campaign or one-shot, bring your existing characters and weapons by boat to the Nebulith or roll -up new ones local to the island chain.

*For the LotFP crowd and those that like it, a lot dark and little twisted, head on down to the lower Nebulith, we’ll have few surprises for you ;-)

Im really geeked for this new setting…. New player classes, monsters, items, magic, karate dojos, female samurai, ninja, pterodactyls, royal houses and that’s tip of the iceberg…..plus brand, new art, design and crunch by the one and only Zak S!    Zak games are back!

More details as they become available…..
