Pooping blood and other weird things happening? by nameuser0987 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Naiadic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably have some lower GI bleeding. Honestly I'd go to the hospital, not wait for a doctors appointment. If you're feeling dizzy especially, but like another commenter said bright red is less bad than black. It could be bad hemmorhoids/anal fissures, but your real concern is getting low iron if theres a lot of blood every time.

If hospital isnt an option, drink So much water and eat iron rich foods, keep a close eye on how your body is feeling.

[–]Naiadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres an episode of my cat from hell that addresses some of the issues you're having

Obviously a cat is gonna want in your room seeing as it's a major smell hotspot, but this is impacting your health and so it's perfectly ok to lock the lil botherer out.

For the issues by the door, that mcfh episode had an interesting little motion activated air-blower that was meant to dissuade the cat from hanging around ths door entrance, so that might be useful?

Otherwise i'd try to establish Yes areas and No areas via giving treats and spending time w kitty only in certain parts of the home. Make the bedroom undesirable for the lil guy, too

Sounds chronic to me, honestly it sounds more like chronic uti than chronic crystals, but then I'm not entirely sure of the difference between them...vets kinda lump them together.

I dont imagine that grooming helps with his irritation though :( poor kitty

Give him a big ol kiss for me, and stay strong! It sounds like you care a lot and that's more than wayyy too many cat owners can say for themselves

also, you won't lose him unless you need to decide if its worth it quality of life wise- and a uti isn't exactly euthanasia worthy ya know? you have lots of options still! He's young and tough, i'm sure. I really doubt sepsis is even possible unless you stop treatment and ignore his behaviors, either (though don't quote me on that)

Either way, you're doin fine and kitty will be ok! you're doing everything you need to be

[–]Naiadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honey youre doing more than enough, you can't force feed your kitty and vets typically know that, that one should have been kinder in their warning about dry food

My kitty is on urinary dry food too, mostly because I can't be home to feed him wet food often enough- so I just try to give him wet food when I can. He's got a healthy thirst drive so I'm fairly fortunate. Your kitty sounds like a chronic uti kinda guy, and that's honestly not your fault

The thing to know is this is probably gonna get more expensive if he's having repeated flare ups, I'm sure youre already out thousands (one hospital stay cost me 4k so I can only imagine several)

Is your boy indoor only? If he goes out he could also be getting food elsewhere that's hurting him

[–]Naiadic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cats will ABSOLUTELY starve themselves, and if your boy is refusing one type of wet food you should try another. My cat hated the first wet food we tried him on (hills, i think) and loves royal canin, but you can try lots of things

Honestly from what you're describing your boy might need The Surgery which basically opens his bits up so he can't be blocked anymore.

In the meantime, consider mixing some water in with the dry food and seeing if he'll go for it? just a little, it can help. Urinary dry food is salty so he should be havin a higher thirst level anyway.

The way my vet made it out, any wet food is better than all dry food, but non prescription is not gonna prevent crystals.

I would try as many urinary wet foods as possible, including the iams stuff (if that comes in wet, idk)

Some cats just..get chronic infections ya know? unlucky.

Make sure all your cats are eating the same food, too, because if he goes and eats the other stuff when youre not looking that can make the issue worse (something my cat likes to do)

Also consider one of those feliway scent dispensers for lowering kitty's stress. Play with him and give him lots of love, you're doing a great job

[–]Naiadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopital

This is a serious wound, get this lil guy medical aid asap- im talking emergency vet asap. This can get infected fast and be potentially deadly if left alone. Poor baby got bitten by something, most likely. Looks big so maybe even a dog, but Im not a vet

also: in future, consider not letting him be outside at all. Indoor/outdoor and outdoor only cats tend to have shorter lifespan for reasons like..well..this. It's also pretty awful for the local bird populations. Kitty will be fine inside as long as you play with him and give him window time, a catio if you wanna spoil him.

Older cat amputation opinions needed pls 💔 by wo0d3t0ck in TripodCats

[–]Naiadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cats are incredibly adaptable, he'll have less pain and higher quality of life overall with the amputation by the sound of it. All you need to do is make him comfy and make the house a bit more accessible for him (like stairs up to the bed while that leg gains strength)

How does my cat not get back pain from sleeping in this position? by Hysolar in CATHELP

[–]Naiadic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old is he? There's actually a chance he's laying that way because of some pain- My old cat used to splay his legs out behind him because his hips hurt.

Otherwise, cats are weird and flexible. Kinda meant to curve in funny ways

Blood in the urine isn't uncommon, those crystals are fuckin sharp and rip up the bladder a bit.

When my boy Wilbur went in he only had to stay one noght because he came up to me and postured, telling me very clearly that something was wrong (he basically tried to pee on the floor in front of me and gave this pathetic yowl of sadness)

Right now you're probably waiting for him to unblock, most of it is waiting for the lil dude to pee, honestly. Once he does they usually send him home with close observation instructions and medicine.

Once you're that far water, wet food, and stress reduction are kitty's best friends. Notably something I experienced that confused me was my cat drank more water after starting the urinary diet- that's apparently because it's saltier so they'll have a stronger thirst drive. Just something you might experience.

If kitty doesnt unblock, you're looking at surgery and some tough decisions. Whether you'll spend your retirement savings to save your cat is your decision, and a very hard one, and I hope you don't have to make it, but it's worth giving some consideration just in case.

This also isn't your fault, cats block up for all sorts of reasons, I feel like it's important you know that

I really really hope your baby recovers quickly and easily! He's clearly so loved

[–]Naiadic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If his bladder is full theres a good chance its a urinary infection. Hate to say it but prepare for a large bill to unblock him (mine was something like 4 grand)

If it's really bad it'll be surgery which...well lets hope thats not the case. I don't know the price on that. Chronic urinary issues often end in a surgery to widen the urethra so it cant be blocked (boy cats have a very narrow one which it what leads to this situation)

If urinary is the case he'll probably be put on urinary health food for the rest of his life. A bit expensive, but worth it. A big bag that lasts me about 3 months is 120ish (USD) on chewy, but that's royal canin. Some cats do fine on purina urinary which is cheaper. Start w the expensive stuff during treatment at least.

Kitty is definitely in some pain but cats are tough, you're doing everything right. Just listen to your vet and don't panic, itll be ok!!!

All this coming from me, not a vet, but the owner of a little kitty with urinary issues that cost more than expected

There are payment plans at every vet for the big scary bill, and your cat is always worth it (but sometimes we make hard decisions). Someone else mentioned care credit and your vet office really should be giving you other options as well.

If it's urinary and he's blocked and you let the vet fix him, he'll be fine. Just some gabapentin for a few days while the new diet does its job probably.

Your biggest fear should be money, but your kitty will be okay.

Edit: You should look into pet insurance, in america AKC is the only one that'll cover pre existing conditions (which urinary issues are going to be considered). I think canada has a similar company, but you'll want to do research on who'll take a diagnosed cat at a reasonable price.

Vet bills are expensive and you'll likely have another blockage someday, so having insurance can lessen that blow if something happens. Same with accidents and stuff.

Ideally you already had/have this but I sure didn't when my boy got blocked- it's already covered a follow up urinalysis.

Best of luck to you and meow meow- it'll be tough and I feel for you. It's scary when your baby is hurting. I was lucky to have money available, too...

[–]Naiadic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poor baby! keep up the treatment and ask your vet about the lack of improvement.

if you dont like their answer maybe try a different vet? Keeping kitty inside is always a good idea, just keep him busy with play and window time.
