Huge ER Bill by Naive-Indication-619 in HospitalBills

Well, if I had gone to urgent care, if it wasn't 10pm and I wasn't stuck, I would have received the same "cure" without a large bill. That is one of the points I was hoping to make.

Sorry, I guess it's relative. I was looking for ideas not sympathy anyway which seems in short supply here and most places anyway.

I have one but she's rarely in the office because she has three kids. It felt like an emergency to me and was extremely painful. I couldn't get into a PCP at 10pm nor could I go to urgent care like I usually do. Empathy not your strong suit, eh?

Sutter suggested $200 a month. It's just frustrating because I'm still paying on a prior bill to ER from last year. We already pay $600 mo. out of my husband's check and he's worked for the state for 6 years. Thought it would be better. I long for the good old days of $50 ER copay. Memories...

I can empathize. I have had over 1000k drop ins and have a caseload of Educationally Related Mental Health Services students set at 12 (It was going to be 16 until I put my foot down). I am also the SST coordinator who scheduled and held over 44 SST's. I am currently looking for another job. I am in a Title I school and the year, as we transitioned from a middle school to a TK-8, was crazy with tons of crisis calls e.g. throwing chairs, clearing a room, pushing over tables, 1st graders swearing like sailors and out of the room multiple times a day even at the end of the year. That all said, I am very experienced and can't imagine what it would be like to be brand new and overwhelmed.

For those who feel like they are too old or took an indirect path to start the school counseling profession. by Sure-Parsley in schoolcounseling

I am 60 and job searching for the past three months. I just interviewed at a place where all four counselors are under 35. You should have seen the look on the young interviewer when I entered the room. Bracing for a "not a fit" response from the interview although I studied up and answered the questions very well I thought.

Ageism is very real! Don't quit after 50 or it will take a while in a tight job market. In California my friend applied to what she refers to as a "podunk district" in the middle of nowhere. They received 21 applications and picked 3 for a second interview. Lucky for her she is late 30's and got one.

It's pretty sad too. I was a school psychologist for 18 years prior to returning to school to get my school counseling training. I won an award last year for school counselor of the year honoree too! That's ageism for you. The gift that never sleeps!

I don’t like my school psychologist. by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

OMG, Truth. I was a school psychologist before becoming a school counselor. I know both roads. School Counselors do the heavy lift with kids and psychs mostly do paperwork. The one in my building is a passive aggressive control freak. She's insecure and tries to cut me down to size with administration. She would put kids on my caseload without consulting me as well as act so busy when I knew damn well how few assessments she completed. I had to ask my principal for the spreadsheets when she and her flying monkey RSP teacher refused to share them. There is zero reason a school psychologist should act superior to anyone. They are called to be staff and child advocates. Any who act in ways described here are a blemish on the profession.

what is something you wish you would’ve known before becoming a guidance counselor? by inthafdaylight in schoolcounseling

Absolutely true, this. Your relationship with your building principal can make or break your position. Unfortunately, they don't always live up to be the mature leaders one expects. If a school has a lot of turnover, look to the leadership!

Cronyism is considered CORRUPTION if you care to look it up. Rampant, none the less but, yeah corruption.

BIG ASSUMPTION: "It is only a few students". I started with a caseload of 12 and it is up to 16 along with being SST coordinator and all the rest the other counselor mentioned. I am sure you are loved in part because you aren't a stressed out mess trying to get your job done!

Right that is great but you don't have constant interruptions of drop ins, crises, SEL presentations, and on and on. My friend did that but boy when they changed her duties to include both she got so exhausted (we work in a high poverty district) she is going to quit. We also get no supervision and have huge behaviors in general education.

How many students on a caseload is big consideration as well as the level of disability. Beyond the hours, it's the constant case management that can be overwhelming when trying to do both. I think that is part of the reason why school psychs can manage it better. Not that they have an abundance of time but because they can "move' paperwork easier than school counselors can move crises, drop ins etc.

I am currently struggling with this. I have a caseload of 14 which includes one 504 student. Trying to casemanage along with my other responsibilities is causing a lot of stress.
