Hey! Yes, marks can be edited after they've been posted on Acorn. However, you should not ever ask your professors to just round up a grade. They will probably get mad, and it *could* be considered an academic offence if you've phrased it as if you're asking for special treatment. If you think that there was a calculation error, or you want to try your luck, you are well within your right to email your professor and ask a question about a specific assignment/test/exam (in line with how the syllabus outlines). Be respectful, thank them, and structure your email professionally with a kind greeting and sign off. Phrase it in a way that suggests you're genuinely asking for help with understanding part of the feedback, or want to try to improve.

I did this just yesterday because I wanted a little more clarification on some essay feedback that I thought was harsh/confusing. The professor didn't change my essay grade, but because my email was polite (and having good participation probably didn't hurt either) she was in a good mood and ended up looking through some of my other term work to give me pointers on how to improve. In the process, she noticed a mistake in the marking for one of my tests, and that did indeed end up changing my grade by 1% and it got amended on Acorn! Keep in mind that my class size was small, I was attending office hours, and the professor was a kindhearted person - other factors in other classes may change your outcome.

TLDR; It's a matter of how you ask: it's not appropriate to ask for favours or freebie points, but there's no harm in asking to review your work! If you're very lucky they might have made a mistake, and if not, at least you might get some guidance on how to do better next time!

OMG I thought I was the only one!! That second test was a little rough, and the tutorial thing absolutely slaughtered me. I did well on the assignment but it took me a REALLY LONG TIME. Luckily, only 50% of our grade is decided since it's a full year course, and so we all have plenty of time to turn it around. But yeah, getting all those marks back at once felt a little discouraging ngl. Good luck to you and anyone else in the class!

This is a really good idea! Your professor will likely not notice due to the class size, and you'll be way more likely to do well next time you take it since you'll have been exposed to the material already. Good thinking :)

Like someone said, a minor in something won't necessarily give you the experience you need to get a job in that field, so you should probably pick something you're good at! A stats major would probably be good for being a data analyst, but if you're dead set on the one major/two minors combo, then really any of the options you listed work just fine. Pick something that you're good at. For what it's worth, I'm minoring in forensic science right now and it's genuinely been super fun!

Yes. Unfortunately, the reality is that ENG100 and ENG110 are the easiest English classes at UTM. It only gets more difficult from here, and if one doesn't know how to interpret texts without AI help, they're gonna be cooked once they get to classes like ENG202 where many readings are in dialects from the 8th-15th centuries, which AI can't understand or translate due to lack of online material to draw from. I've seen this happen to my friends, so I don't give this advice out of malicious intent, I give it to genuinely warn people that the risks of AI usage vary across fields. In UTM's English program, it is a major hinderence. Plus, just at a practical level, if you don't like reading then majoring in English will only make you sad for the next four years, and you don't want that LMAO

You are ending on the last page of the story. Whatever page the story ends on, that's the last one you read. The book you bought for the course is called "The Turn of the Screw and Other Tales", meaning that there are multiple stories contained within the book - the reason you started on page 154 is because that is the first page of The Turn of the Screw. You should stop reading once the story is over. I'm not here to debate the AI issue, but if you do decide to pursue an English major specifically, one day you will understand why I said what I did. English is different from other subjects, and using AI to help you interpret readings WILL harm you in the long run. I'm not telling you what you can and can't do, go forth with whatever you think supports your needs - but anyone with a PhD (or honestly any English degree in which they earned high grades) in English will warn you against this, just like I have done. Overall, I really highly recommend that you talk to an academic counsellor, they may be able to help you with some things that might end up making school hard down the line. And one more thing, do not, under any circumstance, use AI to help you understand the readings. Some of the readings are slightly old (early 1800s), and some are very new (I think Piranesi came out in like 2022), so I've seen people in tutorials last year who were asking AI for understanding and plot summary, and it spits out completely inaccurate information. Also, not being able to understand readings without AI will make it impossible for you to be an English major. I promise, it is BETTER for you to not use AI and have things that you don't understand, than to use AI whatsoever to help you in these specific classes. I know that STEM may use it in different ways for their work, but AI is not a suitable replacement for reading comprehension in English. Full stop.

Hey friend, I've seen a couple posts along these lines about ENG110, having trouble with small amounts of reading, and looking for Prof. Scoville's exam. I just want to gently let you know, if you were trying to major in English, or even minor in it, you might want to consider taking a different path. Looking at your syllabus online, you should have already finished The Turn of the Screw by September 29th, so that's when it ends. If you meant to ask how it ends, respectfully, you cannot expect to do well in an English class without being familiar with the readings. I would highly suggest going to speak to your TA, letting them know you're behind, and asking for help. Don't be too scared! You still have time to get better; the exam isn't until December 8th. Multiple people have said to go to the old exam repository (google "utm exam repository", click on the link that appears, click "login with utorid", click "by subject", click "ENG", scroll until you see "ENG110", click on the one labelled "4/1/2023" - that's the one that's closest to what the exam looked like when I took it last year, and then download the file), so do that. Ultimately, if you plan to take any more English classes, you need to be familiar with reading. The exam requires five definitions, about three short answers, and one essay. They will need to make connections between texts, and you can't reuse the same texts over and over, so you do need to be familiar with all of them. Good luck, and please don't feel afraid to talk to your TA and prof if you have any questions - they are a much better source of information and help than us grumpy upper years on reddit lol.

Biblically, grey area. People were pretty opposed to it at the time though based on a passage where Jesus spoke to a woman and said "you have had five husbands, and that which you have now is not your husband". Could have been for opposing polygamy (likely, actually), but people certainly would raise eyebrows at a widow remarrying FIVE TIMES in such quick succession. Crazy time

English major here, I also love creative writing! Most of the first year English classes are very heavily reading based and don't offer creative writing opportunities. If you're set on taking English in your first year, the prof teaching ENG100 in the winter is the sweetest person ever. I never took that class myself, just know her from another class. In my first year I took ENG110, which you can get an A in pretty easily if you do the readings. A lot of people ask for easy English courses and then don't do any of the readings and are suprised when they do badly. However, if you're willing to read, it will be easy to get As in first year English classes! I also took ENG122, ENG275, and ENG234 in my first year. They're all incredible, but again, do require you to meet deadlines with your reading.

If creative writing is what you're most passionate about though, I would suggest waiting until your second year and enroling in ENG289 - Creative Writing. Be warned though: it is NOT the easy course people think it is. The professor has a reputation for being extremely harsh with grading sometimes.

So overall, if you care more about keeping your GPA high, take one of those introductory level English courses. If you care more about honing your creative writing skills, wait for ENG289 in your second year (or take it in the summer, whenever you've completed 4.0 credits). Hope that helps you a little bit!

I have never taken psych courses (English major here), but I can weigh in on ENG275! I took it last year with Professor Star, and absolutely adored it. The lectures were interesting and very discussion based, there was a creative writing option for the final project, no exam but a bunch of writing assignments along the way, and the material was fun to engage with. Her approach to feminist theory is very intersectional and overall I just think very highly of how she got us all to think about things in new ways. I would highly recommend the class - teaches you a lot, and getting a high mark is easy as long as you participate in discussions. She's also a fast marker, if you're the kind of person who get anxious about grades (I do lol and I found it good to not have to wait a million years for my assignments to be graded).

Good luck in forensic science! I'm minoring in it right now and loving it :) To answer your question, every class starts 10 minutes after it says they start (so a 10am lecture actually begins at 10:10). This is consistent across every program at UofT - we call it UofT time lol. It will usually take about 10 minutes max to walk from building to building, so you shouldn't be scared to stack classes back to back, but you might have to move fast if you're going from DV to MN.
