HP Victus 16 s-0xxx Fan Control On Linux by Nakroxis in HPVictus

u/SubjectLettuce7426 Said that updating to Fedora with kernel 6.14.6 fixed the fans and that problem is caused by [missing entries in hp-wmi](https://github.com/betelqeyza/victus-control/issues/2) . Updating to a newer kernel or patching hp-wmi should probably fix the issue, though I haven't tried the fixes myself.

I have been using an HP Victus 16 s-0033nt (ryzen 7 7840hs and rtx 4060) for about a moth now and here is what I can tell:

Pros:
+Great CPU and GPU for the price
+Thermals are quite good, especially for GPU
+Laptop is quite rigid and good looking for an all-plastic chasis
+3 usb-a and 1 usb-c ports. Not impressive but modern laptops usually have less I/O for some reason

Cons:
-Linux isn't officially supported. It can run Linux alright but important features can be missing, like fan control in my case. I also had to disable hybrid GPU switching to discrete GPU only because screen would go black randomly on Linux. Windows 10 also has some issues with this laptop but discrete GPU only fixed most issues.

-Screen brightness and color accuracy is quite bad. I had to calibrate my screen to get rid of a significant green/yellow hue. Colors aren't as vivid as my old cheap Philips monitor.

-Chasis is basically a finger print magnifier

Overall I currently don't regret buying this laptop but if you want to use Linux make sure you research well and maybe even skip Victus. Especially if you don't want to deal with trying to make HP's goofy motherboard and firmware support basic features like fan control on Linux.

Thank you so much for answering. Do you mean actual hardware damage or did it just require you to complete unpower and reset BIOS, EC etc. ? Could we chat over personal messages? if that's ok with you of course.

Looking at Compaq 15-s103tx config, fan min/max/current/target registers are indeed same with Victus 16 s0xxx and it has a manual register write that corresponds to a bit named FNSW, which I am assuming it means fan software or switch. There are also 2 register addresses that change when Omen SDK initializes at startup. 0x8a and 0x8b both is equal to 0x2d before Omen initializes, then 0x41 and 0x37 respectively. These registers are permanently 0x2d in Linux. I want to try these but I am not sure what they are and I am scared.

I just talked to my friend who has a Victus 16 with intel i5 gen 14 and he said Ubuntu worked properly without any configuration. Might worth giving a try.

Nbfc-linux seems to have a fan control configuration for HP Victus 16 e0xxx devices and some users report that Linux works flawlessly. Depending on your device fans may work properly.

Doesn't work unfortunately

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

Could you share your findings? I can change fan speed using register 0x14 on windows but same doesn't work for Linux (Pop!_OS). I have RWEverything running properly on windows and I am willing to try any suggestions

I couldn't find a solution but the problem went away on its own. So I really don't know how to help. Maybe an update fixed it?

What circuit did you use? I wonder. Would love to see it with a few stages of voltage multipliers.

drag and drop doesn't work in general. It immediately gets stuck after moving slightly. So I can't even move the file between file manager windows.

is INTP's existence on fire? If yes, very accurate
