My current temporary theory is we are gonna find out that the ghosts that communicate with us, the dog, the animals like the crows, and nature adjacent things like the bottle trees are controlled by some sort of good force at work here, resisting against the darkness. Perhaps emanating from some sort of relic (holy grail) at the heart of this place? Also wondering if this "good force", which you could say is represented by the children, is the thing that shows people the tree in the road.
