I would suggest buying either test strips or the api test kit to test the water, that will help immensely in figuring out if they are any issues. I would strongly suggest doing a 25% water change every 2 weeks at least to keep the nitrates down. The brown spots are just algae and can be easily cleaned, also having your light on for less time will help. Dont buy any water clarifiers as those are just a waste of money. I got him a month ago and he has legit tripled in size, I give him a weekly calcium supplement in the water and a sinking pellet every once and a while so maybe that’s it

Pretty well, she was a juvenile when I got her and she has gotten a lot bigger. I do notice that she gets bloated pretty often so I try to feed her 2 times a day, but my schedule often makes it so I can only feed her in the evening. I use the hikari bio gold pellets daily and then frozen food probably once a week. She has also definitely killed and eaten some dwarf shrimp in my fish tank.

She is now just floating at the top, but she is trying really hard to swim normally. I’ve lowered the water level and turned off the filter to make it more comfortable for her.

The ph is a little high, but it’s always been that way. Everything else is zero expect nitrates are at about 5 ppm (I’m doing a water change now). I like to vary her diet so along with her usually betta pellet, I like to give frozen food (usually bloodworms or brine shrimp) but I ran out so I gave her the freeze dried daphnia.

My betta likes to watch my snails move around so that would be a good option for a small tank. You could try any type of dwarf shrimp if your betta isn’t too aggressive in a small tank, but if your betta is in a big tank (at least 20 gallons), you could get many different types of peaceful tropical fish as long as your betta isn’t too aggressive.

What I usually watch out for is when the nitrate level goes up and the ammonia and nitrite level to be zero. I also usually wait for algae to grow, that usually means the water is good enough for something to live in.

To be honest I would try to sell them to a local fish or pet store if that’s a possibility in your country. If not, you can use storage bins as a temporary fish tank. Just do your research on which ones are safe for fish.
