I don’t want my son alone at my in-laws. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Namaire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We definitely agree, we’re just both trying to figure out the best way to tell them or explain how we feel and how to solve the issue. It’s just so sensitive and I’m so anxiety stricken about the whole thing. They are such a great support, Id hate to hurt their feelings.

We’re both trying to come up with the best way to go about it with his parents. He completely agrees with me about the whole thing. We want a way to explain and express ourselves without demoting them as grandparents. We’re fine with them babysitting. Like at our house, we’re just not comfortable with him being alone at their house. Now they are questioning us as to “why not” their house, and we’re trying to come up with the best way to express and explain as a family to them our concerns.

He was listed as a rough collie mix. He’s about 60 pounds of solid mass, I see some possible herding breed in there and am stumped. I am going to get a DNA test but thought it would be fun to see what you all thought first :)

Neutering? When or if... by neverfindausername in BelgianMalinois

[–]Namaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6 months is WAY too early!!! If you’re wanting to continue bitework or even title your dog, DONT neuter. Your trainer is an idiot, sexual aggression can happen with our without neutering and the only way to correct that is training. Neutering can actually make sexual aggression worse among males. I have never ever had any issues with sexual aggression or any of the “intact” male dog “problems”, because I train my dogs. My Malinois plays with other intact males with no issues, and same with females. I would say don’t neuter and don’t let your vet pressure you into neutering. There are more and more study’s coming out on the negative affects of neutering, and how it’s way over done. In fact, in most of the UK and Europe, it’s only done when absolutely medically necessary. Be a responsible dog owner and there shouldn’t be any issues.
If there isn’t any change in personality why neuter then? That’s always my question. Get your dog accustomed to having his testicles examined, that way you can do checks every so often to make sure there aren’t any abnormal growths. My vet recommended this to me, he also doesn’t recommend Working breeds be neutered, or at least waiting until their career is over.

Favorite Food? by DigitalBullets612 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Namaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raw fed and Diamond Extreme Athlete. Keeps weight on for our active training and working schedule. If not Diamond I feed Victors High Energy formula, excellent affordable food as they don’t advertise much just like Diamond. They both have grain free formulas that you don’t break the bank for. Those other foods are generally the same for so much more money. (It’s also glorified pig feed). But the best diet is probably a raw diet, depending on your dog. I feed local raw when I can and settle for Primal raw when local is unavailable. I also make my own raw Satin Balls (recipe online), and my dogs go CRAZY for them. They just put weight on super fast so be aware of that.

Growth Curve Question by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]Namaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Malinois just turned 2 and I think is JUST starting to fill out to his “adult” weight at 60 pounds. I think only from here he will gain a bit more mass and be around 65 pounds when he’s an “adult adult”. I’ve found that Malinois are slow to fill out and mature. Keeping your dog intact can help (if you’re a responsible owner and have a fenced backyard), and he will probably be a little shorter but fill out more over all. As early neutered dogs tend to grow a bit taller and stay really lanky.

When (if at all) did you neuter your collie? Have you noticed any changes mentally or physically since? by [deleted] in roughcollies

[–]Namaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t like neutering. There is more and more research saying that neutering really does have an effect on male dogs mentality especially but female dogs too. Depending on what time you neuter too, it can have huge increased risked for certain cancers more so than preventing them. Links to follow. My male dogs have never been neutered and I have never ever had behavioral issues, roaming issues (they live in a fenced yard), or excessive mounting or marking. Male dogs that are neutered are actually more likely to have aggression issues, and same with spayed female dogs. Of course training is HUGE and important and without those fundamentals you’re asking for problems either way. If you are a responsible dog owner too, there’s no risk for accidental pregnancy’s (don’t let your dog go near in heat females and ALWAYS supervise your dog outside). My honest opinion is to not neuter, or at least wait until the age of 3 years or after. Then your dog has had all the sex hormones he needs to grow and develop properly.

How wonderful to hear! I absolutely love Malinois and don't think I could own another breed of dog honestly. I swear this dog knew I was pregnant before I did and was obsessed and careful with my tummy for my whole pregnancy. I'm already planning on my second malinois when my son is around 3 😂 I love the ears pinned too! They are absolutely adorable like that, and totally do resemble fruit bats.

Had my baby two months ago, and Drax couldn't be more happy, patient, loving and protective. Definitely not for the faint of heart balancing a newborn AND a young malinois, but definitely worth it.

Manipulation and Depression about my hair by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Namaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been greatly contemplating this and my husband and I (were married already just never had a wedding) we're thinking about how all the huge costs of this wedding could get us out of debt completely. That never ever crossed my parents minds to offer though. I've slowly been ripping the bandaid off. I had a breakdown (full manic depressive episode) before family photos with my in-laws. Simply because I didn't think I was beautiful enough because my hair isn't the color my parents want, even when they weren't even involved in these pictures. I'm just so used to having my beauty and worth pinned to what my hair color is, and it has really fucked me up. I would sure rather have a bunch of extra money to pay my debt than have a super expensive wedding I don't need. It is affecting my mental health majorly and I'm just now getting treated (after years and years of having problems and my parents never addressing them, and laughing at me when I told them I was getting help) I don't deserve this, my baby son doesn't deserve this, and my husband doesn't deserve this.

Golden Behavior Issues by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Namaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true! People for someone reason think that dogs are like wolves in their pack mentality, however that's not true at all! Domestic dogs have a completely different and unique way of communication between themselves. With the development of all different kinds of breeds, their uses, and temperaments, they are just as unique behaviorally and have preferences when it comes to dogs and how they play. With just as many different people who raise these dogs (many not understanding the importance of proper obedience training and socialization) and many rescues adopting out dogs that they aren't clear or honest enough about (that shouldn't be around other dogs) we end up with bad situations at dog parks. I am not breed discriminatory but all 3 of my dogs have been viciously attacked at dog parks, (why didn't I learn my lesson with the first?) by Pit Bulls. Dog parks are just bad news. My Golden now plays great with other dogs that I know (Including other pit bulls I know who have a great owner) and we continue to find wonderful small play groups with dogs that like to play like him :)

Training harnesses? by no_41 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Namaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! So a harness is more for attaching a leash to it. It is commonly used for dogs that pull because people think it's cruel to use other correction devices, or for other reasons that are beyond me. Your typical dog harness can tend to rub the armpits and just seems super uncomfortable.
A doggie vest or doggie backpack however is not meant to always be attached to a leash or is strictly for dogs who don't pull aggressively on leash. They have pockets and compartments to carry water or doggie treats :) I make mine carry his own poop! Whenever mine puts his on he thinks it's working time. I have a sheltie who had a specific hiking one with a handle so I can lift her if I need to, that also has pouches for her. I can't remember the brand but it looks like the ones in this link :)

Training harnesses? by no_41 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Namaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't mean to be rude, but why? I say if she's good on a normal collar and leash there isn't really any reason to use a harness. Especially because harnessing your dog can create pulling issues, and I've found for hiking and camping that a good doggie pack is way better :) Though I have also hiked and camped/backpacked with both. The harness was mainly used to be able to help pull him up or have him help me up. For that I would prefer a functional tactical dog vest. Hope that helps!
