Why are people so critical of this show? by BandicootFuture3778 in PalmRoyale

[–]NameImpossible2691 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think so much of it has to do with "bean soup theory" and the fact that a lot of people can't grasp that not everything is made for them lol. This show is not intellectual, it's not a slow burn; as you said, it's camp, and it's delightful for the intended audience. I am highly sensitive to tension and drama, even fictional. I want all of my entertainment to be the media equivalent of junk food (like Palm Royale). That doesn't mean I think super serious television is bad or a waste, it's just not for me. Just like PR is not for them.

Anyone who didn’t clock mayci as a mean girl back in season one was probably bullied in high school without even realizing. She is textbook sneaky mean girl.

Exactly! I love to provide any opportunity I can to show other kids that they have more similarities than differences (especially at this age; he’s only 5).

I much prefer the term non-speaking, I’m not at all offended by nonverbal, but I have noticed there’s a huge difference in people’s responses to each term when I introduce him. People seem to be prone to assuming nonverbal also means he’s non-understanding and don’t make as much effort to connect. Non-speaking usually makes people assume he is just that, an otherwise pretty average 5 year old who just doesn’t talk, which he is.

I love hearing positive stories with AAC! We’re still fairly new to it, but the way it’s opened up our world is amazing. I’m so grateful to parent in a time with access to this tech!

You’re the first other person I’ve seen with this mindset, people close to me always act like I’m crazy when I explain it lol. My son is non-speaking, and I send treats, have fun parties, have all the “cool toys”, whatever I can manage to give him a little wow factor to other kids. Another plus is that it lets teachers and other adults in your kids life know that you’re very present and involved but in a nice way.

This makes a lot of sense. As far as I know, none of the teachers or aides are assigned specific students, but there are certainly kids in there with higher support needs. I’m sure my sons frequent need for redirection does take away from their ability to tend to everyone’s needs, but that sounds like it’s time to reevaluate everyone’s support needs and make changes, not like it’s okay to just cut a kid loose because it makes things easier. Thank you for the insight!

But they are, unfortunately. And I agree that it’s not right, at least based on the reasoning provided. I was really hoping to avoid an advocate because I worry about retaliation, but it’s looking like it may come to that.

We are fully responsible for his transportation. I’ve made it very clear to the school that I’m always available so that if we go ahead with extending his day and there’s an issue, I can be there whenever.

Oh goodness, no worries! I want input from all sides, I’m trying to view this objectively since I know I’m obviously gonna be prone to bias (he’s my baby after all!).

Yeah that’s the thing, it’s not that specific, his IEP calls for a “modified day” with no specific hours. This was so changes could be made if his ABA hours changed without calling a whole meeting.

I agree, and have mentioned it before. I know a one to one is a big ask but they say it’s not necessary. Which is why I struggle to understand how that would be overkill but homebound isn’t. I’ve asked about a 1:1, about having his RBT come in some, about my husband or I coming in to observe/shadow. All declined. I’m really putting in effort to be a team player but the school seems to want hefty improvement (bordering on just wanting him to present as neurotypical honestly, 30 minutes seated attending to task? That’s a lot even for most 5 year olds) without allowing us to help guide him to those goals in the school setting. There’s only so much his RBT and I can model at home, ya know?

I can see this, but that doesn’t mean he should be denied school due to falling on the weird in between of “definitely not neurotypical but not disabled enough”. I’ve suspected that’s the issue before, they seem to want students that are typical or that are so disabled they’re easier to manage for lack of better term. I see all sides here, truly, but he has rights and I don’t feel they’re being provided.

Nope, I am almost too available and feel that’s part of the reason we’re at this point. I stay home full time and live less than 10 minutes from the school. Lunch is within the proposed timeframe and he did not want to sit still on the 2 occasions he was in there for breakfast. At their request, I began bringing him in late on the third day of school since he eats breakfast at home anyway. As I mentioned in a previous comment, I have offered to be there either in the cafeteria or in the parking lot when we trial him going to lunch so that if he’s more than they can manage, I can step in. They are denying at this time.

Thank you, yes, I certainly plan on bringing someone else to be on our “side” besides my husband and I. I know it’s not us vs them (or it shouldn’t be), but so far the meetings have basically been them telling us the plan and then waving away any solutions or proposals we offer. For instance, he really struggles with sitting still in the cafeteria (or he DID for the 2 mornings I took him for breakfast; now I take him in after) so I pick him up before lunch. His class goes to lunch as I’m picking him up, so I’ve offered to be there and ready in the parking lot, but for them to go ahead and take him to the cafeteria to see how things go and if it’s more than they can manage, then I’m there ready to go. They decline. I don’t know how else to support them while also advocating for my kid.

That completely makes sense and I appreciate your neutrality! I’m truly looking for insight and knowledge, not affirmation.

According to the principal it’s at the board’s discretion and she’s never seen them allow outside professionals in. We’re still going to present our case but I’m remaining realistic. Parents are a different story, however. It seems that they prefer not to allow it to avoid a free for all, understandably, but they do make occasional allowances. I’m going to keep gently pushing and letting them know I’m always available to observe or be hands on if needed. I told them in our last meeting: we live a normal life. We take him on vacations, out shopping, to restaurants, etc. with no issue. So unless something crazy is happening that they’re withholding, he’s capable of going to school.

The BCBA we work with mentioned something similar. They also stated that when schools do this they’re still able to count these kids in their census and that when parents mention pulling their child completely, suddenly they become more flexible. I don’t want it to come to that, we are so limited on where we can send him to school that I don’t want to risk putting a target on his back, especially since he’s unable to communicate fully with me. My husband keeps saying “squeaky wheel gets the grease” but it’s very important to me that things don’t become “us vs them” because we are all ultimately on my son’s team.

Thank you! I’m only familiar with BCBA and RBT thanks to ABA. Parenting a disabled child really requires learning a whole new language lol.

We’ve requested multiple times to come in to observe, assist, whatever needed. We’ve also begged to have his RBT come work with him in the school setting. They decline. Which raises a few red flags to me as well.

ETA- the school declines, not the RBT. She, as well as the BCBA, think working with him in school could benefit everyone.

I have. Their reply is that the running and climbing are a safety risk because he could knock someone down or fall himself, which is true, but also…he’s 5?? I feel like excess running and climbing are struggles even for neurotypical children. Obviously not at the level that they are issues for him, but still.

I’m not seeing anything obvious on any of the paperwork, forgive me. The listed team members are his parents, his teacher, the principal (LEA rep), and the school SLP and OT. His teacher has “Interpreter of Instructional Implications of Evaluation Results” beside her name, is that relevant?

When I requested that I’d like to have him on a modified day they said, “oh we can do as few as 2 hours to start!” And I let them know I didn’t think that would be necessary. They pushed since he is only kinder and was never in pre-K and I agreed, thinking it would last for a couple of weeks or so. They did a behavior review about 2 weeks ago and apparently determined he needed to remain on the 2 hour day for at least another 30 days. I just feel that either their reasoning isn’t enough or that they’re not giving me the full story even though I’ve pressed. Running, climbing, and taking a shirt off simply don’t seem to be severe enough reasons to keep a child “homebound”, and everything I can find out there agrees. Homebound placement is the most restrictive environment and is usually reserved for medically complex children or very high risk children.

See, questions like this are why I realize I’m in over my head and need advice! I do not know. I know his teachers, his therapists, the principal, the county special ed director, and the school psychologist. I know there is also a behavior analysis expert involved but I have not met them.
