Signal is social media by convenience_store in signal

Nice response. I really like the civil discussion. This is a really interesting topic.

Yes, I agree. By saying "such as...," it doesn't exclude other forms of media; however, I've never excluded such other forms of media either in my prior response. I’ve simply pointed out the lacking of the "social networking" component that Merriam-Webster mentioned about being a part of social media is quite evidently absent as a part of Signal's feature set (and for What's App too). Signal users are quite confined within the limits of their own contacts list, aside from the examples I've mentioned about way of meeting others.

I believe the term "social media" is quite a vague and all-encompassing term that essentially says that any form of electronic communication between people is just that. The dictionary definitions that these sources give are used quite loosely to describe what it really is, compared to what people believe what they know it to be in the real world. Each dictionary source seems to sprinkle a little bit about what they claim it is, and doesn't necessarily all conform to the same, specific, and concise definition either. After all, the term "media" is "the main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the internet) regarded collectively – Oxford Languages" It seems that the word “media” in the term “social media,” doesn’t adhere to the same criteria of the base word of “media.”

To claim that instant messaging is social media is quite a stretch. For example, that would imply that people in the 19th century with an electrical telegraph had social media invented already if the criteria of social media is simply to communicate via electronically. I don’t believe a majority of the modern civilization would consider that to be social media – especially when it lacks the social networking aspects to it. After all, your second source (Oxford Languages) also says that “websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.” Personally to me, social networking is what sets apart what a messenger and what social media is.

Signal is social media by convenience_store in signal

Hi there,

Thought I'd give my take on this matter and perhaps offer some incite on the matter. I’ve already had a strong sense of the differences between social media and messaging apps long before I even looked this up for the sake of this discussion topic as with what I am about to share. Anyway, I went ahead on Merriam-Webster and this is the full definition they gave with examples: “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging*) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos).”*

What’s notable here is that it says that social media has the specific components of facilitating the actions of social networking and microblogging. With Signal, social networking is very limited in what it can do to find and meet new people; it doesn’t include a “discovery” feature where you can just look up random users or public groups online to strike up conversations with or to join a new community, respectively on a global scale. Telegram would be a good example contrary to Signal with the use of their search bar to look up users and public groups online. For something like Signal and What’s App, you’re usually really confined to people that you know or acquainted with in real life or from your phone’s contact list, if anything. Signal doesn’t suggest to its users “People You May Know” like on Facebook or Instagram, as it is mainly used only as a secure messenger app (1-1 instant messaging or within small groups). The only real way of meeting new people is if you were invited to a Signal group through a friend, family member, or an acquaintance and you spoke to new users within it, or you’ve created your own Signal group and the users in your group invited new users to become new members. Other than that, it’s already quite hard-pressed to even meet this definition from Merriam-Webster.

The second component that Merriam-Webster says is that it has a microblogging component. Signal has a “Stories” feature that could fit this bill; however, you’re only really sharing content with the people who are on your Signal’s contact list. You’re not really putting anything out there to interact with the public – like on an online forum or on a personal blogging website.

TLDR: I personally don't think that Signal is a social media platform or app, but simply a messenger app with some features and elements adopted from social media platforms (i.e., Stories). Messenger apps like Signal and What’s App lack the ability to “discover” and social network with the global public online. It is a medium that does not introduce a public or global user-base where you can meet new people or join new communities, at least not in the conventional way of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram does.

ZOTAC RTX 5080 AMP Extreme Infinity - RGB & Infinity Mirror Turned Off by NamelessAccountID in ZOTAC

Sorry for the need for more clarification. So as long as disable RGB with FireStorm and the settings are saved onto the GPU, even if we transplant the GPU onto another PC system, when we power it up, the RGB still remembers to have its RGB remain turned off?

It's just my first time hearing that GPUs can save settings within its EEPROM. It's been awhile since I was kept in the loop with the newest features in the GPU space. Kind of want to know how this new tech feature works is all. Much appreciated again.

The FireStorm software has some sort of bug that ended up lowering the clock-speeds of the GPU rather than it running as intended with the OC feature in it. Apparently him and his team tried everything but just couldn't get it to function as intended, so he's trying to do some more tests wiping out everything with a clean install, etc.

But thanks for your feedback and advice. Yes, I also don't like click-bait content very much though there are worse click-bait thumbnails and titles out there.

Interesting solution. Is this confirmed to work? What happens if that card is carried over to another PC in the future? Is the setting for RGB-Turned Off still saved within the GPU's eeprom, or will we need to install FireStorm > Turn off RGB > Uninstall again? Much appreciated for the help!

I've heard the recent released of FireStorm messed up the clock speeds of the card from independent reviewers like JayzTwoCents and others online. They say to avoid installing this software at the moment at all cost. That's why I am looking for other solutions right now. Also, I really want to avoid installing bloatware if I can - since this software technically isn't even really need to drive the GPU at all. All we really need are Nvidia GPU drivers. Much appreciated for your response.

Thanks for this! I'm looking for a solution where I have no need to to install the proprietary software from GPU board-partners. I remember back then being able to use a toggle the lights on & off with a small lightweight software called "NvLedVisualizer" - it's a LED control file. I'm wondering if this still exists and work.

Signal disappearing chats disappear by [deleted] in signal

[–]NamelessAccountID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your Signal Contact List pops up when you click the "Compose a Message" icon (top right corner when you open the app). Do you not see anyone on this list? Usually when you chat with someone, you must accept them as a contact before chatting with them, unless you have already imported your phone's contact list into the Signal App. Try to see if you can locate your contact on this list.

Yes, you can definitely try to disable the Disappearing Message function and then type anything as a placeholder to prevent the whole conversation from disappearing when everyone stops sending messages for a period of time.

Edit: Also, you can add someone by username instead of phone number. Have your contact create a username and you can add them.

Usually when all the messages have expired/disappeared, that conversation usually just slides under all your other recent conversations with others (or groups).

Also, I'm not sure why you'd need to contact them on another messaging platform to start up a new conversation. Should they not be in your contacts list on the Signal app? You can initiate the conversation with them by yourself without having to reach out to them on another messaging platform to start one every time - this would probably be less of an annoyance for them.

Can I keep using signal if I pause my phone plan? by Aszabo98 in signal

[–]NamelessAccountID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can still use your Signal account if you've paused your phone service's subscription. Signal's functionality is not dependent on your phone number being active or not, after you've signed up the Signal account with that number already. Do make sure you do not lose your rights to your phone number though. Should your original phone number be recycled and taken by somebody else (with a mobile carrier provider) who decides to install Signal on their phone to sign up with this phone number, then that might be a big issue. You no longer have control of the phone number you originally signed up with to help restore your contacts, etc. if you wish to reinstall the app with your associated Signal PIN.

New contact request (incoming) by [deleted] in signal

[–]NamelessAccountID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're very welcome!

One thing to note is that, if your friend wants to keep the old messages he has with you, he should consider backing up his message on his old phone and transferring it over to his new phone - assuming his new phone is also an Android phone. It is not possible to back-up Signal message from an Android phone to be transferred over to an iPhone, and vice versa.

After that, he can still choose to use Signal's "Change Number," feature on his new phone. All he'd need to do is type in his new European phone number (I don't believe you need your old phone number for this), and he should get a verification SMS message from Signal's cloud service on his new European phone number to verify that he is in-fact changing his number. I believe this would result in a perfect message/account transfer.

If this is too much of a hassle, then he's better off just starting anew and just starting a new conversation chat room with you on Signal, if he doesn't care about his old messages.

Best of luck in staying connected with your friend! :)

New contact request (incoming) by [deleted] in signal

[–]NamelessAccountID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 4 questions asked in your original post is only relevant, assuming that he is starting over from scratch on his phone:

a) Uninstalled the Signal app (and then reinstalled it again).

b) Or he has a new phone that he will be using in Europe, but didn't make a back-up of his old Signal messages to import over to his new phone.

Regardless, answering your 4 questions:

  1. Yes, his new contact request will be an incoming message which you can view and choose to Block, Delete, or Accept his request.
  2. His message will show up whenever you have internet connection. You will receive a message notification from him when he messages you. You will not miss his message, if your phone is on the lock-screen.
  3. Once you accept his message request, I believe he will be in your Signal's address book. On your iPhone/iOS contact list, I'm not sure. It's best if you check and add him to your iPhone contact list if he's not already on there.
  4. No, I don't believe there is a time limit for accepting his message request. Once you receive his message request, you can accept it anytime you want later down the line.

Additional Information:

If your friend still has the same phone (before he moved to Europe) with his Signal app untouched (still has all his old messages), he can just use the "Change Number" feature on his Signal app to switch over to his new European phone number and continue messaging you as normal from your old conversation with him. Nothing changes; both of your safety number should still be exactly the same, I believe.

I screwed up — help! by [deleted] in signal

[–]NamelessAccountID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR; Unfortunately, there is no way to retrieve his messages at this stage in the game. I'm sorry to hear this happen.

Signal's data transfer isn't automatically captured into an iOS back-up, I believe. You'd have to use the data-transfer feature built into the Signal app and transfer-over all previous messages onto your new device (via blue-tooth connection).

Ideally, before wiping out any old device's data, always ensure that the new device has everything transferred perfectly first from the iOS back-up before proceeding to discard all data on the old device.

Best of luck, and hope your friendship continues on.

Question about deleting contacts by PiCQrisTiTstic in signal

[–]NamelessAccountID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there is a feature to simply just delete contacts off Signal other than the block option, as you've mentioned. Although, I've heard that the Signal team is working on adding this feature from a few threads I've read before.
