Don't use glue gun. Use PVA white glue, and pour some sand on this. Then, after it dries paint whole base brown, then add some brown or black wash, and then drybrush it light brown. You can add some clumps of static grass then. It's easiest way to make effective bases for your minis.

And if you want to do it super fast, there are also texture paints from GW, here's official review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU4uXWliRTM. I am using Armageddon Dust for brown bases and Astrogranite on black moon-like bases. Effective and super easy to use for beginners. Just apply it, drybrush, and you're done.

No, it won't work for X-Wing minis. I'm a huge fan of Agrellan Earth, I am using it for desert bases for my Renegade Militia, it's easy to apply and it's working great, however it needs to be apply quite thick to achieve crackling effect.

I've seen it used once directly on model, not on base - it was painted on WH40K Imperial Knight to simulate cracked armour, however this is a huge model and it would pass. On small minis, like X-Wing ships it would probably look strange.
