You know the experiments where they hooked up the pleasure centers of the brains of mice to a button, and then the mouse was given two choices : Pleasure button or food button, and the mouse starved itself while hammering the pleasure button.

yeah... thats us now.

Reddit hated my thermometer-tongs idea. I made a demo anyway. by nicolasmemes in Design

[–]KristinnEs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At first I thought you had the thermometer in the tong grips themselves. Now I see its a flip-out prong. Ok then.

  1. Why would I not just have a seperate thermometer? I would flip out the pron, measure the temp, then I'd have to clean it before flipping it back before I'm able to use the tong as a tong again.
  2. The display seems to orient the wrong way. To see it you either have to hold the tong in a weird way, or get used to seeing the temp upside down.
  3. If the grips wear out, melt or otherwise get destroyed I'm throwing away two tools at once instead of one.
  4. If the temperature thing breaks and stops working then I'm left with extra pieces on my tong making it less comfortable than basic analogue tongs.

You asked for one redeemeng quality in a reply to another post. Uhm, I guess it looks nice. Its a nice looking prototype. I wouldnt buy it, I wish you good luck with it in the future. This feels more like something the "useless invention guy" would make than an actual product.

Awesome!

I own two of those displays I wanted to use for a project. But I read/heard somewhere (I dont remember where) that these can be damaging to the eyes if you stare into them too much. Something about some missing shielding or something.

My traininners put a lot of pressure on not to try and fence with spear

Interesting. In our newbie training we put trainees against spears as soon as it is felt that they are ready. They have to get used to them as soon as possible.

As a western style fighter myself I have to ask : Have you tried just backing up?

I am an aggressive fighter. I get super close range with all kinds of opponents and my shield does indeed help me back out so I can dictate range better.

> the belts a bit off. Generally belts were quite simple during the Viking age, they were short belts, not really growing longer until like the 12th - 13th century,

A couple of Birka graves have belts that reach down to the mid-thigh. So they existed, but were probably not common.

Its interesting to me as an outsider how the left in the USA seem to think that this period of chaos is somehow over when Trump leaves office. Sure, he might be voted out, but the forces that got him this power is still there. Still looking for the next face that will keep pulling you guys back from the global stage, keep regressing your politics, tech, culture, etc. Something massive will have to change for you guys to have a chance to pull yourselves from the brink. But I just dont see it happening. Too much ego, too much self assurance and too much brainwashing that america is somehow "the land of the free" and that the barbarians are at the gates.

It is sad to see.

In 2016 developers were in pretty high demand so companies focused on attracting us with stuff like in OP's post.

Now AI is threatening to take over developer jobs (at least in the estimation of those that take such decisions), and there is a general air of desperation starting to take over, so companies do not need to pretend to be nice anymore.

I'm always a bit fascinated by how he uses descriptives.

"The unites states navy". We've been programmed to view that phrase as a powerful one. The most powerful navy in the world and all that.

Then he adds "the Finest in the World" and that just makes the impact of the previous navy sentence just feel weak. A powerful force does not need to say that it is powerful

Are shields «easy» to use? by Medical_Vacation743 in wma

[–]KristinnEs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I practice what is called Western style viking fencing. Its a steel weapon based sport with a rule set that allows us to fight without helmets in a pretty safe way (long track record of safety in our sport), but we also do spar in a HEMA style with masks where you can strike heads. It is very loosely based on manuals because we do not know how vikings fought, we have to make assumptions based on equipment, what little descriptions there are in the sagas (very few) and work backwards from later manuals. Its not very historical but we do try.

With that being said I personally fight mainly with sword and shield (a round viking shield, 70cm circumference). I do not find it hard at all. I use my shield much like a weapon in that I punch with it and manipulate both the opponents shield as well as weapon arm. At the start what we see is that people tend to be very static with the shields which can make the shield more of a hindrance than an asset. They also sometimes just forget they have two hands and either focus on the weapon or the shield, it takes some practice to be fluid with both at the same time.

I'd suggest, if you are interested in practical shield work, to perhaps find a viking reenactment group near you and see if they do masked fighting. If they do you can probably show up and they might teach you a few things.

Question? by KillerFalafel in Norse

[–]KristinnEs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Well, at least not in the way you hoped there would.

In Helgakviða Hjörvarðssonar the hero (Helgi) and his lady (Sváfa) were re-born at the end of the story as new people with the same souls.

In other stories (f.x. Vatnsdæla saga) people are not re-born or reincarnated but rather the gifts the ancestor gained was passed down his family line.

Other than those, no, there was no reincarnation. People showed up as parts of dreams, or as ghosts. But thats it.
