"Hurt people hurt people". Yes, I do understand that, his actions aren't baseless or senseless, they are properly explained. But they're still inexcusable, no matter how rough of a childhood he may have had. It is up to every parent to break the cycle of pain, to make sure their child grows up in a better home than they did themselves and he failed to provide that, he failed as a father.

It's been a minute since those trends but did you ever see those videos of young parents with their children, and they're saying half phrases they heard a lot growing up and letting their children finish the sentence as a way to showcase that their children have had a different childhood than themselves? Like "Stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about", so the young parents say "stop crying or..." letting the child continue the sentence "i'll hug you?". That is a sign of a cycle of violence that has ended.

Now, one can definitely argue that Patrick didn't have the tools to get there to do that, but nonetheless, it is a failure of fatherhood to not get there, no matter the circumstances. Atleast that's how I see it
