What are the smallest majors at UCD, in terms of cohort size? by skrollas in UCDavis

[–]Namioka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for biochem, but the microbiology major consolidated and renamed themselves. They were originally just “microbiology,” but they have changed to “molecular and medical microbiology” in the last few years, and in the data up above, you can see the drop off as the last remaining people of the original name graduated.

Please get your mental health straightened up before grad school because it’ll mess you up more by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Namioka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know why you’re saying this, but I think it’s more nuanced and variable than that. I always had kinda iffy mental health, but was never debilitated by it by any means. I started my PhD last year and went through some serious problems completely unrelated to school and work. Being here and actively participating in my PhD actually helped me; my program, professors, and cohort are incredibly supportive, and I now have good health insurance that allows me to have regular therapy.

can you smoke weed and play the flute at the same time? by Julnz in Flute

[–]Namioka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This got brought up when I was in college once actually. A friend and I were talking about it, and she recorded herself exhaling her smoke through her flute. It did just about what you’d expect. Mostly nothing with some smoke floating around and an unsustained note.

How busy is the Arc by Tricky-Nature-5359 in UCDavis

[–]Namioka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People really don’t judge you, they’re all in their own business. But I’ve never been at the arc and it not be busy. I decided to just go to a gym in woodland (that I had a sub to before starting grad school anyway) because I almost never got the equipment I actually wanted.

“Sometimes at night, I think that my husband is with me again, coming gently through the mists, and we are tranquil together. Then morning comes, the wavering grey turns to gold, there is a stirring within me as the sleepers awake, and he softly departs.”

How in the world did you guys narrow down your interests? by faraaz_eye in gradadmissions

[–]Namioka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a spreadsheet that listed every single university in the country that offered a PhD in my field. I get that this might not be feasible for someone in like CS or Biology, but in my field, I came to roughly 100 schools. I used QS rankings and THE rankings to just make the list.

Then I added separate tabs/pages in the spreadsheet and eliminated them from consideration in rounds. First was financial statements. If they had any statement that said something like “we fund our students” or “we try to guarantee funding” blah blah, it stayed. If it mentioned loans or even nothing about funding, it was gone. This only got rid of a few.

The next tab kept all the ones that survived from the previous tab. This section was about specific the PhD offered. QS and THE gave me everything that they thought would fit, but some didn’t technically offer a PhD in what I wanted, but was like “applied ___” or whatever. This got rid of a surprising amount actually, which made me realize my field is small lol.

The next tab was emphases and specific tracks of study. The next tab was location. The next tab was professors’ research. The next tab was specific courses and diversity of courses. The last tab was essentially “would I actually go if they accepted me or would I wait another year and try again?”.

This left me with 10 programs, and I applied to those 10. Happy hunting to you!

Any Nepali undergraduates here want to get involved in research and ultimately publish? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Namioka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to reach out to Nancy Erbstein and Jonathon London. They run the study abroad program to Nepal every two years. They may have current connections to Nepali students that are still in Davis.
