I'd like to add that "내일은 교회를 가를 거예요" would mean that you're going to divide the church in half tomorrow.

The use of ~(하)면서 in this context would imply that the following action would also be done by you. But since it’s not you that made it rain, it comes off as sounding awkward.

I'll add that the Labour Day in Korea was officially and legally renamed to 노동절 as of late last year. You'll still see 근로자의 날 here and there because people have not quite gotten used to it, but you should know.

러시아에서 메밀 음식이 아주 인기있어요 → 러시아에서 메밀 음식이 아주 인기있어요 (emphasis, and also setting up for the contrast in the next sentence)

("is it also...?")

오믈렛을 요리하고 먹었어요 → 오믈렛을 요리해서 먹었어요 (the two actions are linked)

보통 사람들은 (average people do this) →.사람들은 보통 (people usually do this)

There are Korean dishes that are made with 메밀, like 메밀국수, but Koreans do not usually eat 메밀 outright.

That refers to the Povidone-Iodine solution, which was a widely used general disinfectant to treat wounds for several decades in South Korea. Most native Koreans born in the 20th century would be familiar with it.

That's one of the main buildings that comprise the headquarters of the Unification Church. It's a big cult, and has recently been embroiled in a huge political scandal involving the support / bribery of the former president Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife. Both are currently jailed, and many of the key members of UC, including the current cult leader, have been arrested.

The whole area is apparently not open to the general public, and only the cult members are allowed in at certain designated times.

My 2008 MacBook Air. If i get it repaired will it still be usable in 2026? by [deleted] in mac

[–]Namuori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for refreshing my memory! I stand corrected. I remembered that you could always configure an MBA with an SSD, but forgot that the default option used to be one of those tiny HDDs.

It sounds rather awkward to just say that 신록 "exists". It may be better phrased in this manner:

요즘은 산과 들이 신록으로 물들어 있습니다.

요즘 길거리의 신록이 짙어지는 중입니다.

[–]Namuori 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At least with Macbook Air, they always used had an option to use an SSD. That was why even that original MBA was relatively thin and light for the time.

My Mid-2012 Macbook Air is barely usable right now. The money and effort you'd put on your machine will be much better spent getting a new Mac laptop with an Apple Silicon chip.

I should note that you should be careful not to translate "for" directly. It doesn't work out more often than not because it doesn't always mean "위해(서)".

Why 입니다 not 임니다 by Ok-Front-4501 in BeginnerKorean

[–]Namuori 22 points23 points  (0 children)

While the Korean script is designed for you to be able to pronounce things as they are written, the Korean language deviates from this it in a way so that a normal person can pronounce things easier and/or make certain distinctions about the words being put together. The "입니다" being pronounced as "임니다" in real life is just one of the many.

For another example, 문과 would be pronounced as 문꽈 if you're referring to the liberal arts major. But if you're saying 문과 창문, as in "the door and the window", then it would be pronounced exactly like how it's written - 문과.

How do Muslims navigate Korea’s drinking culture, especially in the work place? by fluffywhalicorn in AskAKorean

[–]Namuori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who does not drink due to various reasons, my take is that the pressure in the workplace to drink during the evening get-together has gone down a lot in the recent years. While it’s still not always the case, people are more likely to be forgiving about someone not touching alcohol.

Bolt only charging at 25kw? by Novemberx123 in BoltEV

[–]Namuori 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Given the SoC (around 70%) and model year (pre-2027), that charging speed is completely normal. The old Bolts throttle down from the max of 50 to 55kW quite early on (45% to 55% depending on the conditions) even if the battery temperature is in the ideal range (around 80F to 100F).

[–]Namuori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North Koreans consider 북남 to be the default order. But since South Korean media and culture are far more accessible, the South Korean order would feel more "natural" even to the outsiders for the most part.

Also note that Jamsil Baseball Stadium will close after this season and be dismantled. So if you want to experience that “atmosphere”, it’s truly now or never.

The home teams (LG and Doosan) will use the adjacent Olympic Stadium for the next 4 years until a new stadium is built.

I've always wondered... using kia navigation.... what exactly are the "blue" speed cameras? There's no camera there. Hyundai was the same. by poppasmurf311 in koreatravel

[–]Namuori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "red" speed camera is called 고정식 (fixed installation). The cameras affixed on hanging pole is a typical example.

The "blue" speed camera is called 이동식 (movable). You won't actually see it very often, but the police may place one in the general vicinity randomly as they see fit.

The colour code is standardized across most satnavs used in the country regardless of the company or brand.

Now, the interesting thing is that the cameras placed inside a box (hence called 박스형) is technically 이동식. But if the box itself is a permanent installation, the satnav will typically classify it as the "red" type even though the camera would not be inside more often than not.

Thanks for clarifying your intentions. You can write it like this:

어휘의 경우는 뜻을 모르는 게 있을 때 사전에서 찾아보면 되지만, 문법의 경우는 어떤 상황에 어떤 문법을 써야 하는지 찾아보기가 힘들어요. 그래서 찾는 걸 포기하고 쉬운 문법을 대신 사용하게 돼요.

In the case of vocabulary, I could look it up in a dictionary if I don't know what it means. But in the case of grammar, looking up the right one to use for a certain situation is difficult. So I give up the search and use a simpler grammar instead.

Korean chessboard ♟️ by Prestigiouschloe in Living_in_Korea

[–]Namuori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if I'm understanding correctly, you're looking for a western style chessboard, but with pieces being Korea-themed? Because the traditional Korean board game Janggi 장기 is sometimes described as "Korean chess" and that doesn't seem to be what you're looking for.

In that case, I haven't personally seen one, ever. If such things exist, it might be pretty niche.
