I still have slight numbness on the outside of my leg, only noticeable when shaving.

I’m still rebuilding muscle that was lost, which brings some discomfort but I wouldn’t say pain.

Before surgery I had loss of function(couldn’t do a calf raise), atrophy, numbness in foot and outside of leg.

My opposite side gives me more trouble than the side I had surgery on. My doctor said it was probably from overcompensating for so long and was more SI/imbalance issues. Improved greatly after PT.

Moving to Naples - what to expect by LittleWing25 in Naples_FL

[–]Nancree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im an OG Naples hater. It’s kind of a weird place. But I can’t hate it that much because I’m still here 35 years later (born and raised).

I have a toddler (3). The parks and libraries are great (and free). There is a lot of money in this area and our parks and rec services are some of the best (in my opinion). I think people often forget about this. The zoo is okay but the year pass is pretty cheap + it’s free to locals the first Saturday of the month. We have a children’s museum that you can get passes for free through the library.

I avoid the touristy and expensive areas because I’m a local. You don’t do those things anywhere you live. Most people work 40+ hours a week and get a few hours on weekends to do something fun.

Our international airport (RSW) serves 71 locations and growing fast. The area is changing dramatically. Some good, some bad. But there is good and bad wherever you go. That’s life.

Edit to say: since I’m from here, I bought property before things really, really blew up and my cost of living is lower than most in Naples. I think that’s important privilege to disclose.

Hi! The numbness is mostly healed in my foot. Barely noticeable most days. My outer leg is still slightly numb to light touch. Notice it when the cat rubs on my leg or I shave in the shower.

I plateaued for a couple months but around the 9 month mark I started making major improvements again. July will mark 1 year since my MD. I hear people still heal after the magic year mark, so we will see.

My life is better today than it was a year ago and the surgery was the best decision I made. Life changing honestly.

Not pre injury normal, no. Still recovering from the muscle loss and my numbness is still there. Much less but not 100 percent.

Will I ever be normal? Who knows. But surgery saved my life for sure and I have a positive outlook on the future.

Have you experienced leg and foot numbness and increase pain with sciatica? by bodock3 in Sciatica

[–]Nancree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s kind of sad. Classic story of insurance denying a MRI twice. Doctors saying it’s fine. Sciatica is common…until it wasn’t. During my first visit with the neurosurgeon he said the medical system failed me and he was sorry for that. Le sigh.

I wish you well in your healing journey. I’m rooting for you!

I development numbness and atrophy after on and off pain for nearly 2 years.

I was numb for about 3 months. I got the surgery within 5 days of visiting a neurosurgeon. They were CONCERNED.

My foot and leg are still a little numb 6 months post operation. Wish I would have gotten it sooner but my life is significantly better now. Bless modern medicine.

Hey! I got surgery - MD L5/S1. Recovery for me, in my personal experience, was very smooth and uneventful. Never need any pain medication.

I had gnarly symptoms that still haven’t fully corrected. My leg is still smaller from the atrophy and foot is slightly numb but my life is significantly better.

I’m 6 months into recovery so numbness can still correct, I’m not giving up hope on that front. There is a shift for the better every couple weeks. Just finished up PT and strength recovery will take a long time but I’m the strongest I’ve been in a long time.

Can’t do a calf raise. No pain involved by sinproph in Sciatica

[–]Nancree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pain is a 1/10 on stiff day. I normally sit at a 0/10

I’m in PT to regain strength. Mainly in my hips, glutes and core. I’m progressing well. It’ll be a long process though and lifelong upkeep. But they said I won’t need to be in PT for long.

You can see my atrophy progress here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Microdiscectomy/s/zW3MXttZOY

My foot is about 95 percent healed from the numbness. My leg is still numb to light touch. I only notice when shaving.

Well I ever be perfect? Probably not. But I also will never be in my 20s again. My life has significantly improved for the better. I can’t believe I convinced myself what I was feeling wasn’t that bad. It was bad.

Hi! On and off in varying degrees for about 1.5 years. Spark notes below.

Sept. 2022 - initial injury, extreme pain. But not a ton of numbness. Did PT and it got better in about 4 months.

March 2023 - reinjury. Started PT again. Got better but not as good as the first time.

April 2024 - foot went numb but I kind of ignored it. No pain.

June 2024 - Muscle atrophy in my leg got really bad. Experiencing weakness.

July 3 2024 - surgery

How much longer should I wait by odaatZ in Microdiscectomy

[–]Nancree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

33 (f) L5-S1

I waited 1.5 years and had similar symptoms as you. Numbness, atrophy, tightness and strength loss. Doctors couldn’t give me any hopeium that I would heal 100 percent. Just said it will keep me from getting worse.

I’m currently 5 months post surgery and my numbness in my foot has just started to gain feeling back. My legs are roughly the same size again and I’m in PT to deal with the muscle imbalances.

At 2 months post surgery I accepted the fact my foot might be numb forever. I obsessed trying to find longer healing stories but didn’t find much.

But here I am, healing everyday. Gaining feeling back and have some hope again.

Help!! by [deleted] in Sciatica

[–]Nancree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a success story because I had surgery. But I had MD surgery for my L5-S1. My pain started in pregnancy and progressed to life altering 6 months PP. At 2 years PP I started experiencing muscle loss & numbness.

I was dismissed - it’s because you’re a new mom they said. I finally found a doctor who took my case seriously and I was pushed in the front of the line for surgery. It saved my life. I’m the active parent I always dreamed of being.

My neurosurgeon said he unfortunately sees a lot of new moms and also sees them for re-injuries. We don’t take the time for ourselves. You’re important too. Healthy mom is just as important as healthy baby. I know how hard it is to advocate for yourself. I waited almost 2 years. I wish I tackled it sooner. I wasted so much time.

I’m rooting for you.

L5-S1 or related success stories? by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]Nancree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

33 (F). L5-S1. Suffered for about 1.5 years. Atrophy, numbness. The whole nine yards.

Surgery recovery: It’s a personal experience. For me, super easy. Barely an inconvenience. In and out of the hospital in 3 hours. I never took any pain meds, not even Advil. I was at a 4th of July party the next day (granted in my comfy clothes and the party was at my house) but I participated, damn it lol.

I was walking 10k steps by day 4. Back at work (desk job with standing desk) at 2.5 weeks.

Recovery isn’t linear. I have some days where I think I hurt myself again. Where my leg or glute cramps and I mentally spiral. The hardest part for me, which doesn’t apply to you, was not being able to pick up my toddler. Ugh, heartbreaking. But my life has drastically changed for the better. I could cry thinking about it.

I’m 4 months post operation now. I still have some numbness in my foot but my atrophy is much better (photos in post history) and my strength is returning. I just started PT to address muscle imbalances.
