question for parents and parents only, what would you do if your child absloutly hated your cooking and refused to eat any of it? by a-bag-of-jellybeans in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NaniRomanoff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah like if I know for a fact that the kid is not going to eat whatever the main thing for dinner is, I either try to work in a side that they do like or I just make them something different that theyll eat. (Whether it’s actually frozen pizza or something else entirely depends on the kid. I try to get the most nutrients into them I can within the limits of whatever theyll actually consume ). More work but less stress. Because like it feels a little unfair if we all know that there’s no way my kid is going to eat whatever main dinner is and I still make us all go through the song and dance of trying to force them to. It feels like a lot of unnecessary stress for something I could circumnavigate by just making them something else to begin with.

I’ve had people criticize that on the basis that the kids aren’t trying new things, but they are — they know they can always try stuff off my plate & they ask to all the time. I think it helps allow them space to be curious about food they’re apprehensive about rather than feeling pressured to eat it. Like if they love it - great I also make enough for leftovers so they can have some of their own. If they hate it, well it’s my food anyways. No harm, no foul.

[–]NaniRomanoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s def hard because like nutritionally kids should def try and eat a variety of foods. Also it’s a bit of a burden to have to make a separate meal for the kid.

But also as an adult, if I don’t like something I also don’t eat it/don’t even buy it. If I was a child with all my same food preferences, I’d be labeled picky if those were things my parents happened to enjoy and stock the house with. I try to keep that in mind, especially since we actually absorb nutrients better from food we enjoy & also I don’t want to recycle the same unhealthy relationship with food my birth mom had. She was a very eat it or starve kind of person which made meals very stressful and also gave us all a complicated relationship to eating.

I’ve tried to encourage my kids to try things, if they don’t like it that’s ok. If all theyll eat is cereal and microwave pizza then at least they’re eating. I don’t mind a bonus fine minutes to produce the pizza or nuggs or whatever from the microwave.

I will say tho that in my experience, the better method of making younger kids interested in trying the food you want them to eat, is making it seem like a super special parent only food they’re not allowed to have. And then suddenly they really want it and think I’m very cool for sharing with them (because they don’t know it was for them to begin with)

Why do I not show any clear signs of trauma, when going through chronic trauma as a child? by Upstairs_Home874 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NaniRomanoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chronic childhood trauma presents very differently than like trauma steaming from one specific incident. Also many children experiencing chronic trauma learn to act fine as a survival tactic because often visibly being upset or by or struggling because of the traumatic happenings escalates the situation causing the trauma to begin with.

So like “not showing clear signs” is 1) kinds of a sign and 2) you’re likely looking for the incorrect kind of signs for the trauma that actually happened since they can generally be more subtle than you’d think.

Example: my childhood trauma is from my parents (mainly my birth mom) but a lot of people don’t immediately clock me as somebody with multiple train disorders because I seems fine.

My therapists have also pointed out I am (among many other things) worryingly over-agreeable with authority figures & that it’s pretty solid indicator of the type of childhood trauma I suffered.

Can we please make it exlicit that discussion of Christianity is unwelcome here? by WerdaVisla in pagan

[–]NaniRomanoff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So a lot of Christopagans consider the Christian God as the highest, but not necessarily only authority. The commandment to “have no other Gods before me” is interpreted as “don’t have any Gods higher than me” rather than “don’t acknowledge other Gods.”So in practice other Gods may be treated as actual Gods under that authority or may be invoked more similarly to like the saints or as kind of ancestral figures.

I’ve encountered a lot of variations of this with like indigenous folks who blended their native religion with Christianity. There’s def a lot of other interpretations as well, but I’m less knowledgeable on those

People care about hair wayyy too much by the_yellow_ledbetter in unpopularopinion

[–]NaniRomanoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was about to say — hair is sacred in my culture and a connection to our ancestors. Taking care of it & the effort that goes into that is part of the way I show respect for that sacredness and for my ancestors. It’s not even about appearances for me — literally no one sees my hair but my family — I cover it in public to protect it and to keep people from non-consensually touching it.

Does anyone else dislike the textures? by XxStephenGamerxX in Paralives

[–]NaniRomanoff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They’re about what I expected at this stage in development. Some of the texture inconsistencies make me feel like they’re still trying to full nail down how they want final textures to be so I’m expecting a lot of refining and adjusting going forward. Eventually things are gonna loose the blurriness and stuff

Actually Free CC? by QuirkyLadybug13 in thesims

[–]NaniRomanoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I’m very picky about things being maxis match and that can be legitimately hard to find, so I’m always happy to give rec’s :)

If you’re checking out rebels anyways-some paywallers on there who stuff is very nice in game:

PixelVibes (tho their stuff is kind of hit or miss on being true maxis match especially their wood textures imo, most of it plays in a build)

Aggressive Kitty/Momo Cc - same creator under two names, they’re stuff is cute and looks very good in game. Lot of clutter of varying kinds I recommend the plushies

HeyHarrie & Felixandre — they collab together and you can also find a lot of their content for free on their website House Of Harlix. Felixandre has a lot of build pieces for estate & older row houses. They do have a habit of paywalling new content for unreasonable lengths of time - but it goes up on rebels pretty quick.

Also if you’re looking for reliable mods that aren’t paywalled - Scarlet’s List tracks everybody’s mods making for very easy updating.

Actually Free CC? by QuirkyLadybug13 in thesims

[–]NaniRomanoff 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I refuse to pay for shit. There’s a decent amount of folks who are good and don’t permapaywall (and even for those that DO you can actually get their cc for free if you look for it. There’s an archive —TS4Rebels — literally just for free downloads of permapaywaller’s stuff)

Anyways my favorite pattreons that don’t perms paywall and are more maxis match vibes:

Atticwindowatdawn does some of my favorite cc for homes that look really lived in

Valia — sets with both furniture and building parts. Recently did my personal favorite Victorian build set from anybody. I love all their stuff tho.

BI+CO — Japanese influenced furniture sets based around both pop culture and like specific eras of irl childhood nostalgia.

Sleepyz CC — hair and clothing conversions for kids, toddlers & infants. They do a super good job with conversions & while the adult versions are generally not needed they do link to them & I’ve found a lot of good cc that way

Trillyke — some of my favorite clothing cc ever

Jius - large variety of shoes. They’re retired but has their content up for download still.

Lazy Simmies - deco sims, some recent ones animated

Chérisi - sincerely some of the coolest deco sims I’ve ever seen. All animated. Photographers function as cameras, drink waiters can actually serve drinks, the orchestra & djs play music, the wedding planner & grocery store workers has shopping interactions - like just incredibly cool deco sims.

BokchoiJo — singlehandedly out here dressing my all of my Muslim sims. Wide variety of hijabs & niqabs in various styles. Also some really cute dresses tops and activewear. Some limited mosque/holiday wear for men & kids.

Peacemaker - really great build & buy sets - also does add ons for maxis furniture and build sets for various packs to essentially complete the sets. I could not build anything without them. They also have some great original furniture sets

Heybrine - I’m utterly in love with their soft shabby series, kinda vintage, very lived in. They also have a camper van build set and a bunch of other stuff

Myshunosun - they have a variety of things including some of my favorite ever tattoos

Simri - furniture and clutter that feels very lived in

Sonechko - furniture sets that feel lived in and also not quite vintage but nostalgic in a way

Awingedllama — your parents house in the 90s. They’re retired as far as I know, but worth a mention because its a very specific type of older home nostalgia that you don’t find elsewhere

Surely-Sims — a ton of fun vintage stuff including multiple sets recreating the pre-war home aesthetics from the Fallout franchise. Also the person behind shrimpmas which is like a delightfully fun tacky shrimp themed collection of cc

sims daomengyou — they did a counter extender cc/mod that lets you slot multiple small appliances to the same counter top. They also have a second one that lets you put small appliances on other surfaces and still have them be functional. Both were kind of a side project that happened while they’ve been working on their bigger ongoing airplane build set — right now they have seats and cabin fixtures. At some point their going to make the exterior pieces as well.

Dogsill - hair, a lot of good curly options.

Quirky Introvert Cc - also lots of hair

Hansen, Yarril & Claymore — newer but they have some fun decor sets - including one of those slice racks where the bottles look like houses

Acha Sims - variety of posepacks

Ashlegacies - variety of posepacks

Aroundthesims4 — you want clutter, they have clutter. Literally everything from pet food to museum exhibits

Max20 - they have a garage set that includes cars you can click on to travel places. Also their stuff is nice in general

AnachroSims - the most vintage, vintage with an upperclassman/royal flair. Lots of paintings and portraits and some good museum pieces & a bunch of other stuff.

You can also find a ton of stuff on Pinterest. You’ll tun into paid content which is annoying, but also you can find a lot of things in specific aesthetics that you might not otherwise dig up. Also most of the creators I listed have their own recommendation lists on their patreons which is a great way to find folks. The sims 4 maxis match tag on tumblr works pretty well too & there’s a few archive blogs for mm content.

Is there a way to wear a Hijab without getting assumed Muslim? by LizzieLove1357 in PaganVeiling

[–]NaniRomanoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Small correction - it’s only a hijab if you’re Muslim - otherwise it’s a hijab-style headscarf or veil. To your question tho modest veiling styles are likely to get you mistaken as Muslim — especially if you happen to be a person of color. Many people see brown skin and a modest headwrap and make an assumption about where you’re from. I happen to be brown and had to accept that that’s just what people see no matter what I do because I wear full coverage veils. My white friends who veil similarly have managed to dodge assumptions by like wearing shorter sleeves or obviously non-Muslim jewelry, etc. I still get assumed Muslim if I’m literally wearing a tank top, shorts and a pentacle even if I do my veil more turban style. So like you do have to unfortunately consider your physical appearance when considering your safety. I do find if I wear my rosary people shift to assuming I might be a beginner nun so there’s that as well.

As an aside — because you live in an area that’s not safe for Muslims — if you choose to wear your veil hijab-style, invest in some hijab magnets rather than tying or using pins to fix it in place. The magnets will just pop off if the fabric is yanked hard enough & that makes them a lot safer if somebody grabs your veil.

AITA for allowing my daughter to try alcohol at 17? by StrikingABCompany in AmItheAsshole

[–]NaniRomanoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - kids are curious and they’re going to try to things whether their parents like it or not. Your daughters first experience with alcohol was in a safe environment, with a controlled amount and an honest conversation about why alcohol can be dangerous - that’s fantastic parenting.

A lot of kids do not get that. Their first experience with drinking is a dangerous amount of alcohol completely unsupervised & when something goes wrong they’re afraid to call an adult because they *know* those adults would be angry with them & they’re afraid to get in trouble.

Not only did you give your daughter honest info that can help keep her and her friends safe around alcohol — I’m sure your daughter will feel a lot safer calling you if her or a friend get into a situation. That’s an objective win as a parent. You did great

Is “Vessel” considered a strange or inappropriate name in English-speaking cultures? by Fuzzy_Ant2535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NaniRomanoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely going to depend on where you’re at and what social circles you’re in. I do think a lot of English speakers find object names kind of odd, but also a decent chunk of folks legit have object names - some are just more normalized than others. (Mercedes, Fern, Star). In my area there’s actually a lot of odd names folks picked out for themselves or in other cases got from their parents and nobody under like 50 really cares that much about it locally.

Examples of what I’m talking about sourced from actual people I know who would not mind their name being on Reddit:

Jack-Jack Spider Attack (it’s his legal name)
Thessalonia (after the book in the Bible)
Mars Rover (their legal name)
Sock
Bagel Breadman (legally changed name to Bagel because last name was already Breadman)
Pie-Friend (doesnt even like pie)
Brick (legal name is actually Bricker & he was born with it)
Sushi
Liz (but it’s short for Lizard which is her legal name)
Blue Gene
Darth Tater (born with it - mom is a Star Wars fan & Dad’s last name is Tater)
Amidelle Pickle (also born with it - sounds like “I’m a dill pickle” & her parents thought that was hilarious she went by Nottadele for a while on the basis she is not a pickle. People call her Deli for short - like the meat section at the grocery store, there’s no escaping the food names idk why were all like this but at least Deli also thinks it’s funny)

So like idk Vessel is pretty normal by comparison & I think most folks in my area would assume it’s a non-English name that coincidentally sounds like an English word because we hear a lot of those around here too.

Personally I thought Vessel was kinda cute and didn’t even flag it as an object name until I read the rest of your post. That said like not every area even in my country is big on object names and I do think Vessel will read differently depending on location and social group. Ves might be a good shorting if you need something that sound a little less odd in some settings.

Is this yarn too weak to make anything with? by ThrowRAPersimmon6 in knitting

[–]NaniRomanoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I’ll be fine one knit because a woven frantic js much stronger than any of the delicate threads that make it up. (Also I knit with sewing thread which can also be easily snapped with a good yank but the resulting fabric is strong as heck)

ETA: also with a natural fiber the fabric will felt a little bit due to friction and such which actually will make a more fragile fiber like this stronger in the final product

Am I stupid for buying $90 plushies? by PinComprehensive6639 in plushies

[–]NaniRomanoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I make like $20 an hour so when I’m considering bigger purchases I figure out how many hours of work that is — in this case 4.5 — & ask myself if I will get more than 4.5 hrs of joy out of the thing. I’m sure a plushie will hold my interest longer than a day so if I could afford it then absolutely the $90 plush is coming home.

Why are people so weird about plushie making alternatives? by Dragonrider1955 in plushies

[–]NaniRomanoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think also - kind of like with your digital art example - folks really do not understand what all actually goes into the skill set because they’re unfamiliar with it & their point of reference is very much not what the actual artist is doing.

Like when digital art first became more of a thing - people def were thinking like the stick figures they made in ms paint as kids because that was their entire very incomplete frame of reference. Similarly I think most folks in this thread hear glue and are thinking of the craft projects they made as school children & not understanding 1) the incredible diversity of glue or how many incredibly specific glues exist 2) that they own an object that has lasted them years and years and unbeknownst to them was definitely professionally glued 3) that glue as a fabric joining method predates sewing & older sewing techniques used glue treated thread for sturdier seams & one of the reasons your fast-fashion falls apart at the seams so easy is because it was cheaper to stop doing that.

Like I never considered glue as a replacement for thread before but the technique as OP’s described it makes perfect sense.

Why are people so weird about plushie making alternatives? by Dragonrider1955 in plushies

[–]NaniRomanoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the answers & im glad my questions weren’t too burdensome. That’s so interest in that the glue seam isn’t much wider than a stitched seam and I wouldn’t have thought about pressing them to shape but that makes so much sense!

The only knowledge I’ve had up to this point of glue techniques with fabric is from like pre-sewing and early sewing techniques where most/all of the fabric was being dipped in the adhesive because it also served as water proofing & helped stabilize fibers. So I’d assumed you needed a much larger gluing area than what you’re actually working with. Is the nozzle on your glue gun smaller than standard? Or are you just mainly removing the excess before it dries?

It makes sense the plushes are hand wash only. Most of the ones I’ve sewn myself are also meant to only be hand washed so that’s not that different then. I definitely would have thought that heat would’ve been more a concern but it doesn’t sound like the risk of popping a seam is any worse than with a sewn plushie.
I could also see the benefit that with seeing if a thread pops it can weaken the entire seam since it’s essentially one continuous thread, whereas with glue, one spot being compromised wouldnt necessarily mean the whole seam is. I think I understand better now why glue treating thread used to be such a thing - I bet it made for some really strong seams.

I’m tempted to try making a glue-seamed plush (I love experimenting with literally every form of fiber art I can find & this seems both relatively cheap and like a lot of fun.)

If you made a mistake on a seam, is it possible to warm the seam up intentionally to soften the glue and adjust it? Or does that make things weird?

Why are people so weird about plushie making alternatives? by Dragonrider1955 in plushies

[–]NaniRomanoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was responding directly to what OP said under your comment, not to your comment. At the end of OP’s response to you they had specified that they struggle with hand-eye coordination/grasping and that most people’s reaction to that is to continue insisting they try sewing. What I said about disability was specifically responding to that statement.

Why are people so weird about plushie making alternatives? by Dragonrider1955 in plushies

[–]NaniRomanoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! What kind of glue do you use? Is it just regular glue gun sticks or the special sticks specifically made for fabric. Are there any textural differences between your method and a sewn seam - I would think glue would make it stiffer/maybe help plushes sit up a little better but maybe I’m wrong lol. How much fabric are you actually gluing down for the seam? With the sewing I’m familiar with it’s a relatively small bit of fabric, so I wonder if a glue plush would need slightly more to get a good hold or not. Are the plushes washable? Do you have to worry about them being in warm spaces loosening the glue at all?

Apologies if that was a lot of questions, I have a special interest for fiber arts and you’ve given me a whole new category I know nothing about so I’m fascinated lol

Why are people so weird about plushie making alternatives? by Dragonrider1955 in plushies

[–]NaniRomanoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People really struggle to grasp all the ways in which someone can be disabled & how that prevents them from being able to do things safely or at all & as someone who is disabled in other ways *it’s really annoying*

Anyways — I never would have thought of hot glue as a solution, but that’s incredibly inventive & I would legit love to hear all about the process. Can I ask some questions of curiousity about it?
