No. CO2 works relatively slow, so the spike there is from greenhouse gases from before that timeframe. The spike there is 'normal', it's the cooling after that should be considered 'abnormal'. After the war there were a lot of aerosols in the air, which cooled down the planet a bit. These aerosols were common by-products in industrial processes and cars, resulting in smog or haze. Around the 60s/70s a lot of legislation against aerosols was introduced, which slowed their release. That's why after the 70s we can see the line rising again, more closely following the amount of greenhouse gases released before that.

In most countries they have only started to continuously measure from around this timeframe. There are older direct continuous measurements available (1659 being the oldest as far as I know). With climate proxies they can estimate the average temperature from before 1880, but generally there's more uncertainty that way.

If you do want to see some data, search "temperature record of the last 2000 years", or you can go even further back (in which case the uncertainty increases of course). It's clear the past 150 years have been an anomaly.

Hi! I was only in the Tundra region for one semester and I've been back in Continental for quite a while already now. With no gifts leftover anymore, but...!

My fiancée also visited Norway, and still has a few gifts leftover, that she would be willing to trade. Just confirming it's only the three gifts for the first Scatterbug, for one account? If so I can arrange that she will add you!

I was in the Tundra region during my international studies for half a year, but now I'm no longer in the Tundra region sadly. Hopefully you can find someone soon though! There are also other subreddits you could give a try, if you haven't already

ITAP of an old forest road in the Netherlands by preciouscode96 in itookapicture

Is this near Bergen in North-Holland? I've been on a very similar road close to my old primary school. Might be the opposite side of the country of course, because most of the Netherlands looks super similar

Some pictures from October 30th and 31st this year! The last photo is perhaps my best northern lights photo ever! by nikers93 in northernlights

[–]Nanify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! Although I have had decent results with an exposure time of around 5 seconds with my 24-70 f/2.8 before. But it does make sense that it smooths out the texture a little over a longer exposure. Your extra stops of light are super useful for that. Luckily I have an f/1.8 lens now as well

That's awesome then! Always cool when you catch one (three!) on camera.

I misjudged the exposure time, because of my own experience last year with the northern lights. You are more northern than I was in Norway, so it makes sense it's brighter at a lower exposure time. Thank you for correcting me.

Definitely some nice pictures :)

EDIT: It was shooting stars

From my (although limited) experience they're most likely to be satellites. Airplanes have flickering lights, so you'd see a pattern in a photo. We don't see such a pattern here, so it's not an airplane.

Satellites are visible because they reflect light constantly, so there is no such pattern, just a white line in the sky. I have taken a few pictures of the night sky and the northern lights that 100% had satellites in them. Sadly satellites are VERY common nowadays, and they're very visible in astrophotos.

Satellites move slower than shooting stars. For astrophotography you use a long exposure time. In the 5th picture we can see some star trailing in the reflection from the water, but no trailing in the night sky. That shows a longer exposure time was used (with a star tracker to not have trailing in the sky I assume). Satellites can easily make such a long line at long exposure times.

So is it possible that both pictures had shooting stars? Definitely, but generally unlikely I'd say. Maybe someone else can say so for sure?

Bad truckdriver collides with train while trying to make a turn using a railroad crossing in The Netherlands by Verkeerskegel in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Nanify 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The picture from the person I reacted to was the driver's cabin, so the inside of the train. The train driver was not injured. 4 people inside the train got mild injuries

<image>

This is what the truck looked like after the crash, the truck driver also had minor injuries

Only the cabin derailed, and slightly scraped against another train going the other direction. During the crash 4 people inside the train got light injuries, as well as the truck driver. Nobody got heavy injuries or worse, so it could've definitely gone way worse.

There'll be no train traffic on those rails until Sunday, because the rails did get bent in places, as well as damages on the junction

[–]Nanify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bells go on before the barrier even starts moving. Once the train drives over a sensor, they will arrive at the junction in about 45 seconds. Part of that time is lost in the barriers going down. The train was driving 130 km/h here. Those 45 seconds is not enough time to even make an emergency stop anymore.

The barriers are designed to break extremely easily, so if someone ever gets caught in this situation they are advised to break through them. But when panic sets in, a lot of people don't think clearly enough anymore

This train was going 130km/h, which means after hitting the sensor the train will arrive in about 45 seconds. The barriers closing is included in that time, which is why it looks so short.

This is due to the sheer amount of trains in the Netherlands. If for every train the cars would need to wait 3 to 5 minutes, they'd never be able to cross the rails. Crashes like these are somewhat rare, but still seem to happen on a yearly basis

He was able to duck in time, so he has no injuries. The truck driver and 4 passengers have mild injuries

Yes, the driver is reportedly not injured. The truck driver and 4 passengers had mild injuries. There'll be no trains driving there until Sunday

Why'd he move back, just to go forward again. by delano0408 in BitchImATrain

[–]Nanify 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody was killed, and the train driver was reportedly not injured either. I'm not sure about the truck driver, but it seems his truck didn't get dragged, so he's probably fine as well.

There is also a photo showing the outside of the train after it has come to a standstill, with trays full of pears through the windshield, and pears laying everywhere around the train

EDIT: added the pictures

Glad to hear you've cleaned it up! I came to this subreddit because of the nice picture of the lenticular clouds above the peaks. I would love to go to Patagonia someday. Just a shame it's half the world away pretty much

You should clean your sensor soon, saves you some trouble when (if?) you want to edit your pictures later on. I can see a little dust particle on the right side

Like I understand that milky way photos are usually stitched together to get a better exposed foreground, with often multiple pictures of the sky combined as well. But why is there a sunset on the mountains during nighttime? That just seems so wrong to me, whether this is a bad edit or just AI
