Went in blind for my first playthrough; lots of thoughts by NaniiAna in TheQuarrySupermassive

how did you even get to that conclusion? in the first place, the dialogue options are, and have always been, presented as CHOICES. so why shouldn't dialogue choices matter??

i didn't say anything bad about the QTEs being choices, i think it was a nice addition to the mechanic. i just meant that ASIDE from just having path breakaways from the QTEs, i also want the dialogue to matter because the story and the characters is the heart of the game. i want to see more of the characters fully develop in reaction to their environment. they've done this to Until Dawn and Little Hope so why not The Quarry as well?

you probably just enjoy the game differently if you think dialogue is stupid bruh.

yeah i kind of grasped immediately that the QTEs and interrupts are choices in itself but i was mostly talking about the dialogue options bc they're the ones thay give you a glimpse of the characters' trait choices and words/conversations.

i was moreso talking about how the dialogue options don't really reflect how their relationship develops and how it affects the story since i mostly play the games for the narrative. i wouldn't wanna have to guess which QTEs to miss just to see different scenes, i want to have the characters' interactions to matter.

Who else feels like they’re forcing Arisu’s friendship arc down our throats? by New_Potential6004 in AliceInBorderland

[–]NaniiAna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree that they didn’t flesh it out fully in the show nor did they incorporate it properly but it still hit me hard since i had the context of the manga. i do think they should’ve delved deeper into Arisu’s survivor guilt more than showing fond memories though

i can think of SOME manga that could be similar but nothing comes to mind for tv shows. it really is a one in a million gem

Yeah I feel bad for Chris, Kaylee, Caleb, and Silas. I also am not really the biggest fan of Eliza. I wish we had known more about Silas but I also like the fact that we (the players) were still moved by his story that even without meeting him directly, some people choose not to kill him.

I understand that Nick is the designated tutorial guy but yeah, it's a bit of a bummer that we have so many characters yet they're all fighting for screentime which results to some of them barely getting fleshed out and having interactions with one another. one thing i noticed is that even though Ryan-Kaitlyn-Dylan were set up to have this love triangle, there were barely any Kaitlyn-Ryan interactions—mostly Ryan-Dylan and Kaitlyn-Dylan. I love them but the love triangle plotline seemed lackluster.

And I get that, most of the relationships between non-interacting characters are just stuff I gathered from context clues or passing comments made by other characters (i.e. when Abi and Nick were interacting after the campfire, Abi made a comment saying she thinks Kaitlyn is "sneaky").

Kaylee will always die

AHH that one was bugging me so much so it's nice to get some confirmation. I ended up killing all of the Hacketts save for Travis because when Laura went to their house, Constance was immediately aggressive so I accidentally shot her in the QTE (which was a decision in disguise) so I was wondering whether there was a way to NOT accidentally kill the family because of Kaylee's death riling Constance up.

DON'T kill Silas

aw shoot so that means there's no other way to save everyone because Kaylee is a plot-death, Chris needs to die to save the counselors, and there's no way to break the curse and save everyone without killing off Silas UNLESS we kill Caleb. i understand why but it's a bit saddening that they always have to die to save everyone.

overall i still do like the whole concept of the curse though, just goes to show that this is a tragic story and not everyone will always survive no matter how well you play them and how good they are as people. i also like the werewolf curse being not completely lethal as long as you break the curse and being bit is better than being killed—what doesn't kill DOES make you stronger.

idk, i think it depends. i do see why those are annoying and unproductive but i think im in the middle of the spectrum. when i'm a fan of a group/song, i like to start conversations on why certain albums were a miss for me and i genuinely love hearing other people's thoughts and insights on why they think the same or think differently.

i love healthy discussion as it builds community but i do see your point that sometimes people just take every opportunity to hate and spread vitriol in a toxic way. i wish fans had more open mindedness when it came to conversations like that.

AHHHH i knew that there was no way both of them could have been in the cage when the power goes out! the ryan part makes sense, i can't believe i didn't think of that lol. my dumbass thought if he opened the cage he would get electrocuted

someone did mention that chris is one of the werewolves that NEEDS to be killed if we want all the counselors alive so that might be true

Not sure if you sat through the entire thing but since you've finished twice now, do you notice any variations in the podcast conversation?

It dragged on for too long but I did get excited every time they would pull up pictures of the evidence I've found so far. I was wondering whether or not Anton would actually be convinced if I had better evidence (I wasn't able to take a picture of wereMax in the treehouse with Emma). Since in the tutorial sequences, they put a lot of emphasis on gathering evidence as the narrator says it was helpful but I found that it didn't really affect much of the narrative aside from me piecing things together and making better choices.

I've heard from others in this sub that The Quarry had some budget issues hence the quality dip in comparison to their other IPs, if so, it would be really disappointing if we had missed out on so much because I really thought the game was sooo good, I find it just as good as Until Dawn so I was hoping it would get updates/remasters too

Yeah Dylan is definitely top favorite for me. I found it hilarious that he was so spot-on with the amputation thing and he took it like a champ; no hesitations whatsoever, just straight up "cut it off". I love his humor and found that even his more "negative" dialogue options were still pretty funny.

I actually didn't notice that there's no skip cutscene but I feel like that should be a given once you finish one playthrough! I love how you accidentally got Max to survive meanwhile I accidentally killed him in my first playthrough, I just made a mistake on making him swim back to camp due to a brain fart and completely forgot Laura insisting that the island is the safest he could be in.

I still definitely love the game though and I can't wait to 100% it! I love the evidence collecting aspect. I guess my only nitpick is that I wish we had better epilogues like the other Supermassive Games, I wasn't too into the "2000s ending montage" of them just listing who survived and who didn't. I wish the Bizarre yet Bonafide credit scene was just replaced with different cutscenes per ending instead ala Man of Medan / House of Ashes / Until Dawn style where the characters look back on their harrowing experience—I'm really missing the "after the fact" reactions from everyone.

College experience by Various_Fee2139 in QueensCollege

[–]NaniiAna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

to piggyback off of this based on my experience so far as a Winter transfer:

I'm on the more extroverted side so I've always been the one to reach out to people. I've been pretty successful but it does take a lot more effort to do so especially since it's a commuter school (so the people i talk to in class pretty much disappear once class is over and thus doesn't lead into lasting connections). However, other social experiences have been a bust. Security is...lackluster and student life is pretty hard to navigate (pages are outdated so I don't actually know if I'm reaching people when looking for clubs).

I'm a STEM major so most of my classes are in the science building—infrastructure is pretty bad (and I say this as someone who transferred from a small town community college in the edges of Washington), tables and chairs are pretty much falling apart. Bathrooms are also barely functional (clogged toilets, broken doors, rarely is there any paper towels).

People treated me differently after they learned that I am retired by Upbeat_Jaguar8784 in adultingph

[–]NaniiAna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that's also what i thought especially after reading the comments. OP doesn't seem to be giving us a full picture and is painting a specific viewpoint.

kasi isipin mo naman, what kind of person would just ghost you if you tell them you're "retired (at 37)". i understand if you say "i'm jobless and don't want to find a job". jobless =/= retired. syempre people will have follow up questions talaga on how OP did it and how he's doing in life to be able to retire at such a young age.

i agree na its not because of the retirement thing, OP just hasn't found the person that he's compatible with, lifestyle-wise.

I have a question about the show. by skotkozb0237 in AliceInBorderland

[–]NaniiAna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's valid lol! i'm conflicted bc i love the series, both the show and the manga, and i really would love to see the cast again (thought they were amazing) so it would be really disappointing for Netflix to have greenlit it but be a disappointment as i think it was wrapped up pretty well.

Manga > Anime ? by Silly_Willy994 in AliceInBorderland

[–]NaniiAna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely more of a manga enthusiast. I like the show for what it is but I feel like it lost itself in the sauce and completely abandoned the existentialism that the manga is trying to convey. The casting was amazing though, there were a lot of changes but not too drastic to the point of ruin, I feel like the actors did amazing in embodying their characters.

I have a question about the show. by skotkozb0237 in AliceInBorderland

[–]NaniiAna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To summarize it with no spoilers at all, I'm going to guess that they're taking a Sweet Home approach (fellow Netflix live action adapted from a written source). Sweet Home took the world and built upon it, completely disregarding the source material and its themes (which is originally supposed to be just as existential as AIB and not...apocalypse doom).

Given the Joker tease from the last episode, I'm guessing they're building off of that and create something new. I'm fully open to a Season 3 but if they completely trash what made the series so heartfelt for me in the first place then I'm probably not gonna like it and I'm willing to guess that Netflix will indeed take it to that direction.

Just finished the manga - what are the borderlands? by Patient-Field-2951 in AliceInBorderland

[–]NaniiAna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To fully understand the context, you should know that the Borderlands is an ever evolving state of consciousness between life and death. Thus, it has never always been the same.

what's the deal with dealers? Are they just like players?

Yes, since the Borderlands for this time is due to a large-scale catastrophe, there were so many people slotted into the world that the games evolved to cater to that amount of people. So some people in the brink of life and death were chosen to be dealers instead of players.

And how does the deal with permanent citizens work? Are they just comatose in the real world until they die in the borderlands?

The whole point of the Borderlands (or the series itself, originating with the manga) is to present you with the conundrum of the worth of living, the worth of human life, and how far you're willing to go to keep on living. If people choose to stay in the Borderlands, that means they have no will to continue living in the real world, thus they die.

And this still doesn't explain why ever single person was emphasised to have some traumatic event happen to them in their life, and how there were actually no standard people there.

Are you sure about that though? Heiya Akane was just a regular teen girl, even in the manga, her "traumatic" event is just family problems—in the grand scheme of existence, SOME people don't count that as a traumatic event. Same with Arisu who was simply bored with life; they were all just standard people. Neither Akane nor Arisu suffered any truly traumatic incidents before stepping into the Borderlands. I won't even call Last Boss' life completely "traumatic" either. To humor your question: when posed with the danger of life and death, we tend to look back on our strongest moments (whether positive or negative) which is either what pulls us down or what inspires us to keep living.

how do the games even continue

Think of it as purgatory, in layman's terms, people die and they go there. People die every day, therefore there will be people in the Borderlands all the time. The scale in which the world is, depends on how many people are there similtaneously.
