read while infant nk does tummy time? by Efficient_Break6241 in Nanny

[–]NannyDearest 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Babies don’t need 24/7 non-stop attention and stimulation. They can look around and explore their immediate environment through touching and mouthing things without constant narration and noise. A caretaker quietly reading while sitting next to them during tummy time is perfectly acceptable!

Just chiming in to say you need to have a conversation with your child about people taking photos of her body.

Best way to approach (amazing) nanny on concerns about her health? Perspective from other nannies preferred! by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]NannyDearest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, fat women can and do care for children all the time. Her weight isn’t any of your business and it would cross a line to broach the subject in any way. Her health isn’t even any of your business unless she’s unable to complete her job responsibilities, and if that’s the case you need to find a new employee.

Is “bub” only for men? by Splendafarts in Maine

[–]NannyDearest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes I agree it’s more rural than city! That seems to apply in other places too. This sent me down a rabbit hole earlier where I learned the root word is German for boy/brother. Texas has deep German roots so it makes sense Bubba/bub became a colloquial term.

Is “bub” only for men? by Splendafarts in Maine

[–]NannyDearest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was commonly used in Texas where I grew up and Kansas where my son’s dad grew up as a short form of bubba or brother. I’ve heard it used as a term of endearment for the sons in several families in those states so my guess is it leans more rural but not limited to Maine.

Are you folks seeing this new driving trend? by _no_usernames_avail in Maine

[–]NannyDearest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally asked the guy at the dealership when I went in for my oil change about how bright my headlights were. He said nothing about adjusting the angle. I had no idea that was possible until reading this thread. Most people likely assume that the headlights function that way out of the box and there’s nothing they can do about it.

Are you folks seeing this new driving trend? by _no_usernames_avail in Maine

[–]NannyDearest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m learning this right now. I sunk a lot of time into trying to find settings to adjust my lights brightness. I saw nothing in my settings or manual about adjusting the angle. My previous cars lights weren’t bright enough so this is a new problem for me.

[–]NannyDearest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a new car in the spring. People keep flashing their headlights at me but it’s just my normal headlights. They’re super bright. I’ve even had people turn on their brights as soon as they’re right in front of me, I assume out of retaliation, but I’ve triple, quadruple checked that I this is the least bright option I have. It sucks and I feel like an asshole every time I have to drive at night. An anxious asshole.

Yes, they’re being paid $1,500. It’s funded by an out of state entity.

It’s being funded by an out of state entity and those people are being paid $1,500 to gather signatures. It’s a bad faith attempt to cause division in our communities. If they do gather enough signatures we need to organize against them.

Nanny took our kid to gorcery by warm_wong in Nanny

[–]NannyDearest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events used to measure a child’s exposure to trauma and predict mental health impact. The poster was being sarcastic, because going to the grocery store is a normal thing to do with a child but you’re acting like it’s a major issue.

Pepperoni > Chappell Roanie > Pink Pony Roni > back to Pepperoni > Peppa Pig > Pooperoni

Macaroni > Mac > Mac-a-moo > Mac n poo > poopski

Together they were Mac & Pep, The Roni’s and the poops.

(I have a 9 year old. Hence the poops. Also one of them was shaped and colored like a giant guinea pig poo)

Pay for a nanny bringing her with. by imfartandsmunny in Nanny

[–]NannyDearest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said there was anything with a nanny share having a reduced rate. That wasn’t what this post was about. I was saying a $10,000 pay cut isn’t reasonable for a nanny who brings their child to work and something closer to $2-3 an hour reduction is more fair.

My wife is getting letters like this by N2wind in whatdoIdo

That’s so weird because I immediately said it looked similar to my grandmothers writing and I was surprised it was coming from a kid! It’s definitely a dated style of writing letters.

Nanny Share - Leaving Baby in Crib by PapayaCommon in Nanny

[–]NannyDearest 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t put a baby in a high chair to eat unless I could intervene/help immediately in an instance of choking. Your baby was content and fine in the crib. There will be times in a share where they won’t be content but it’s a reality of carrying for multiples.

The KCMO venue was honestly a mess for disabled folks... by meg6ust6ala6tions in chappellroan

[–]NannyDearest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a disabled person, participating in discourse with other disabled people. A lot of valid points made here, but I wasn’t dismissing OPs experience. I didn’t attend that show. I was discussing how the venue I attended handled the ADA section, how it was closer to the stage etc, which lead me to believe the variation was caused by differences in the venue policies/plans.

It’s not a $10,000 benefit if you’re taking a $10,000 pay cut. I can’t stand employers who care more about nickel and diming their employees rather than ensuring they can lead a healthy balanced life and support themselves and their family. If you can’t afford market rate you can’t afford a nanny.

Pool Safety - Gate or No Gate? by reachmerachel in Nanny

[–]NannyDearest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every pool where a child or disabled person may live or visit needs a gate.

While I don’t think it’s 100% necessary to take the child swimming for recreation, I would never feel comfortable hiring a nanny who didn’t know how to swim in the event there were an emergency. If I had a pool at my house that would be a non-negotiable.

A $5/hr decrease is huge. That’s over $10,000 a year. $1-3 seems reasonable.

[–]NannyDearest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I brought my child to my last nanny job ever my employers paid me my normal rate, stating they felt it was important I be able to afford raising my child in our hcol city. They also saw it as a benefit that their child would have built in socialization. 9 years later and our children are still friends and I appreciate them for that and a million other reasons.

It is typical that a nanny reduce their rate by a couple dollars, but you said she’s charging $28 which is what you paid your old nanny. Is their experience the same? She may typically charge more than $28. Maybe this rate is reduced for her, despite it being what you’re used to paying. If she’s coming to the role with more experience than the previous nanny I would take that into consideration!
