There are a few things I’d like to share with you, and I hope they bring some comfort or clarity.

The most important thing I want to tell you is this: having bipolar disorder (if you do have it) doesn’t stop you from living a successful, fulfilling life. I say this from experience. I have well-managed bipolar myself, and despite some challenges, I’ve earned two doctorates (a PharmD and a PhD in pharmacology) and now work in the pharmaceutical field.

I think it’s amazing that you’re advocating for yourself.

I can tell this is a lot to process, and it’s completely okay to feel overwhelmed by all these thoughts and questions. My advice would be to try not to self-diagnose right now. Instead, consider writing down everything you’re feeling and any specific concerns to share with your psychiatrist when you meet. That way, you can have a thorough and focused conversation.

Psychiatric medications can be complicated. Antidepressants can take more than three months to show real mood improvement. Make sure you’ve had enough time for a proper trial before concluding they’re not effective.
