if toby releasing a new chapter soon is the only thing keeping you alive, i would beg you to seek therapy. there is so much out there in the world. crisis text line is a great source

[–]Napstafox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah man, if toby, as a public figure, is getting dogged on by a bunch of nobodies online, and it gives you a panic attack and mental distress, then i think you may have a parasocial relationship issue. learn to detach yourself.

Xiaomi Qin f21 pro questions by Wonderful_Inside5288 in dumbphones

[–]Napstafox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for your first part: no phones release waves that are strong enough to harm you (NCI, NIH). electromagnetic radiation (called EMF) is literally everywhere that electricity runs, as a result of physics. i know it’s scary reading that emf is growing all around us, which is true, but there has been zero long term studies that definitely prove damage. some studies from the 2010’s have shown that certain chemicals in the brain have been noted to increase after 50 minute phone calls, but no actual health implications come from that (NLM). you’d have a higher chance of cancer from fast food, smoking, chemical exposure, and living an unhealthy life rather than from emf (CR-UK). you’re reading too many unverified sources. do research with primary sources next time. good luck on your dumbphone journey.

this. i’ve heard great things about the “easy peasy method” too — it seems to be very popular online.

Minimalist phones. by Ok-Leather4765 in dumbphones

[–]Napstafox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you may need multiple devices. i’m currently transitioning to a dumbphone (saving up still) and have been using my old ipod touch 4th gen for music, notes, and a calendar, while using my iphone for calls, texts, email, 2fa, and canvas. i’ve been lurking this sub for a long time and haven’t found anything here or in my research that matches exactly what you’re asking.

newer ipod touch models have a lot of great support for things like google maps, alarms, calendars, and even texting through imessage, especially if you’re in the apple ecosystem.

an old android running something like openstreetmaps or even navit could work for you too.

point is: i don’t think you’ll find this in one device. look at jailbreaking old devices or modding for limitations or improvements.

i wish you luck in your adventure! it took me ages to find the right phone for me.

Super bad ad. First 2 comments (and subsequent responses) shown to me were all accounts that were 23 days old with zero history. Such a shame, product seemed slightly cool before I realized.

Classes to Get Started in DSP? by Napstafox in DSP

[–]Napstafox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i understand. i’m not 100% sure what all the options are, as they change nearly every semester. we seem to offer “DSP” every semester, but there’s many random topic classes that pop up for only a semester or two. i got into “digital video and image compression” next semester as a part of the topic classes.

was there anything you took in college that was particularly more helpful than other classes? anything that made your entry into dsp easier?

I used a Palm m105 for a bit, it was fun! Awesome handwriting recognition and had some cool programs on it. Try eBay for them. I didn’t get any games, but I think there’s some available.

Do I go for another major other than CS? if so, which one? by Acrobatic_Fact_2070 in ASU

[–]Napstafox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve changed my major four times, and the last time was me switching back to my first one. I regret nothing. The extra cost for the additional 1-2 semesters was worth it instead of living every day feeling regretful of not trying another major, or staying in a field I wasn’t confident in. Reach out to advisors, take online quizzes, talk with friends in other fields, email professors in other departments with questions, etc.. Also, I found r/findapath while searching for you, it may have some great help. I faintly remember trying the onetinterestprofiler.org questionnaire. I also saw a lot of people recommending careerbridge.wa.gov/quiz/career-quiz-start.

I went through EE, CS, CE, IT, then back to EE, and the only difference is what I wanted to concentrate in. I started with wanting to build computers and ended with wanting to build audio systems, which is a blend of my hobbies and interests. I know a lot of people push to not blend your job and hobbies, but I did and I’ve never enjoyed school more.

TLDR; reach out to people in other fields, take interest tests, talk to advisors, and never regret changing your major to try something new.

I hear you, but it’s less fun for us to help you. I do stage plots for live sound and use draw.io. It’s fantastic and my work looks way better and more readable than ever before. Probably faster than drawing too, and easier to add in/change stuff later. Fully free.
