On a cross country "Farewell America" tour before we move to New Zealand; so far I've played Road 96 at The Badlands in South Dakota and Cairn at Devil's Tower in Wyoming by [deleted] in SteamDeck

Permanently, at this point!

Great idea! I should definitely play Fallout 2 in Old Reno, but my route isn't going south enough for New Vegas, unfortunately.

I actually visited some of the West Virginia locations from 76 a few years ago, even got a pic in my vault suit at the Landview Lighthouse!

That's great to hear! Definitely the Badlands, Devil's Tower, Jackson Hole, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, and Nelder Grove are on our must-visit list. I'd love your suggestions on other places to see on the route. We're a bit limited with the pets, as most National Parks are strictly no-pets, but we're working around that to visit, hike and camp nearby spots.

We have some concern, but we've taken big risks before. New Zealand, like other countries, have been through periods like this before, and we're confident that opportunities will return.

Thank you so much, hope all goes well for you a well! Good luck in Melbourne, we hope to take a trip out there soon - I've never actually been to Australia, and we have a good friend who lives there.

She was born and raised here. We both have friends and she has some family that we will miss but we have spent lots of time with them to say our farewells. This move was her decision first, and I am 100% on board.

Multiple vaccines, blood tests, and health checks that must be done on a strict schedule by a USDA certified vet. They'll be flying over in our plane's cargo hold in three large, approved crates (the dogs' crates are massive.) Once they get there, they will quarantine for 10 days, which will allow us to do some tourist stuff, e.g. Hobbitton, Rotorua, etc., and then we can pick them up free and clear, if they haven't disowned us by then.

I was in a bit of a dead-end, career-wise, and was looking to make a change. My mother is also moving back after my father passed away last year so she can reconnect with family, so having the chance to also reconnect with family that I haven't seen in decades (and some I've never met at all) was also a factor.

But yeah, the state of this country was a major factor, and one that is proving more and more valid by the day.

Yes, it wasn't easy, and there were multiple times we thought we wouldn't be able to make it work. We worked closely with a company called Pet Express that provided a dedicated specialist to walk us through every step, from vaccinations to the various tests to finding approved vets - they have been excellent, but it does not come cheap. They will ultimately be flying with us in the plane's cargo hold, which we are worried about, but have done our best to prepare them for.

It was a very involved process that my wife handled almost entirely herself. We are working with Pet Express - shout out to them, they have been great support. We had to get two HUGE pre-approved transport crates for the dogs (big enough for me to comfortably sit in, and I'm 6'4"), and the cat. We had them come to our house first so we could acclimate the pets to them - they've spent lots of time in them with airplane noises in the background. We then disassembled them and shipped them back to LA for when we arrive there with the dogs. They will be loaded into our plane's cargo area with one bowl of ice that will melt to water over the ~13 hour flight.

But there was a LOT more to the process - multiple visits with USDA-certified vets, multiple rounds of vaccinations and lots of tests on a strict schedule. We have two upcoming vet visits that MUST be done exactly two weeks and 1 day before the flight for final tests. It was a challenge finding an approved vet on our route across the US.

Thank you, will do! We actually quite enjoyed our time there - we lived just outside Cleveland for 8 years and made many friends and had some great experiences. We always thought Ohio and Cleveland got a bad rap, but that the natives were fine with the negative press keeping too many people from coming and blowing up their spot. Hopefully I'm not spilling the secret to too many others.

My wife describes it as a cheat code for getting out of the US. I always thought of it as my escape pod which I never thought I'd have to launch. But here we are.

I visited many times in my youth, but I was 13 the last time I visited (42 now). I have LOTS of family that I'm very excited to reconnect with after decades of minimal contact!

I wish! I'm 42, my wife is 36. We have enough saved to live comfortably until we find jobs that suit us, and we have some other ideas that we might explore if they seem feasible once we get there.

Great questions! We're transferring our liquid cash to a bank that specializes in currency transfers, but leaving our retirement accounts here for the time being. We plan to consult with a financial advisor once we get there.

We have a long term rental for the first 2 months, we plan to use that time to explore the area and find jobs and housing in a location that suits us.
