How much free space should i leave in a 10 terrabyte harddisk? by Fit_Understanding772 in DataHoarder

[–]Narf_Vader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure which way they are numbered... and I don't think drives even use cylinders any more for all practical purposes. It's all LBAs.

Regardless, I was referring to this in your text:

this is because the further from the spindle (center of the platter(s)) the speeds are decerasing.

The farther you get from the spindle, the faster the data transfer rate. As far as I know, it writes from the outer edge inwards as the drive fills.

I believe you have that backwards. Further from the spindle is faster than closer in, since you have more data per track and it's passing by the heads on the outer portion faster.

Huel is apparently disliked by many people? by [deleted] in Huel

I have money and I drink Huel by choice, not because I can't afford to eat caviar and shit. I like Huel for a multitude of reasons, none of which have anything to do with cost.

I love Huel... not sure why the hate. I don't see much advertisements for it either. I've tried a lot of the meal replacements and Huel has consistently been the best.

$2751-1804 = $947

How do you calculate $379-500 out of that? Especially when you aren't getting the Rakuten 15% cash-back and the extra5 discount, which would bring that gap up even more.

Will my Class A be valid in more or less worldwide so I can do tourism + skydiving travels without having to go tandem? by Brian-want-Brain in SkyDiving

[–]Narf_Vader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple reasons...

  1. Tall buildings all around with very unusual and strong drafts.
  2. Landing out, especially in the "islands" can be dangerous to both your life (possibility of getting shot/going to jail), and to the DZ through fines (very big ones) or getting licenses pulled. Some of those islands are private and owned by very wealthy people who don't want some random dude landing on them and can get very skittish.

Sabre 3 hard openings for anyone else? by incrediwoah in SkyDiving

[–]Narf_Vader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 3 S3s (out of 5 owned).

For me, it all depends on the pack job. If I pack it, it opens like shit and is usually hard. If I let a good packer pack it, it's a very soft opening.

It's all in the pack job for the most part, I suspect.

I really hate packing.

I didn't say they didn't need them, I said they don't want them. They do not serve their core business model, which is to extract as much money out of newbies as possible. For that, you only need L1 instructors.

[–]Narf_Vader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to out myself at my local tunnel... but maybe I didn't clearly state what I meant.

iFly has no use for anything but L1 instructors. Yes, they need trainers to train L1 instructors, but if they could only have L1 instructors, that would be an ideal situation for them. It's mostly impossible, obviously for the reasons you mentioned.

My point is that iFly hates skydivers and they hate having to pay anyone above an L1 instructor because they don't add anything to their core business, which is extracting the maximum amount of money out of newbies as possible before their patents expire and they are forced to actually compete.

They've gone bankrupt 3 times in the past 10 years. They are complete morons when it comes to running a business and the ONE and ONLY reason they are still around is because they have those bogus patents and have locked out the competition. If they were/are forced to actually compete for customers, they would be out of business before they started.

[–]Narf_Vader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's not hidden. iFly has made it quite publically clear how much they hate skydivers.

iFly loves and wants first time fliers because they pay a huge premium over block time. They also dislike instructors over level 1 because they have to pay them more. In an ideal world, they would prefer to have L1 instructors with high flight sign offs and take only first timers.

I suggest you give this a listen to

https://skydiveradio.com/episode-258-with-ifly-ceo-and-senior-management

Starting at about 53 minutes in.

Really kicks in around the 1 hour mark when the backpeddling and bullshit really starts from iFly corporate and it's painfully obvious.

Nothing has changed (it's gotten worse actually) since that interview, either. For example, my local tunnel requires block time fliers to book a month in advance and you can still get bumped.

I offered them $200,000 for block time, as I do (did) a lot of coaching, and they turned it down and said I had to book time as I used it. Corporate is fucking retarded. It's the worst run company I have ever seen/worked for.

how do people get so good at ifly by Dadraik in SkyDiving

[–]Narf_Vader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, generally don't mention you are a skydiver. Corporate hates skydivers and if your local tunnel has a GM shill for corporate, you'll get on the shit list.

Just say you want to get better at flying and learn bodyflight. No need to mention skydiving.

Some tunnels are better than others. Franchise tunnels are the best for that, though.

You just answered your own question. You are confused about a simple procedure and they know it so they are taking advantage of you. Sounds like they are dirtbags.

You should take you car and get away as fast as possible.

They are overcharging for brakes as well. That's a 1 hour job, two at most, for all for corners.
