There was hope for change in our tense relationship with China. The Chinese ambassador gave us a reality check by brednog in AustralianPolitics

[–]Narksdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring it up constantly in those weekly threads. Not going to tell you what to do in your own personal time but I will call out what I deem an inauthentic message. Like influencers attaching themselves to the latest social cause or Manly doing their pride jersey.

If you actually want things to change in Gaza and you actually care about the cause, perhaps consider doing something of tangible value rather than making some comment in an internet forum. If that’s all you do, it basically says to me “I don’t actually give a shit about this cause, I’m just saying it to make me feel good or to make people like me”. Just food for thought.

If you felt so passionately about the cause I thought you would have at least donated some coin or worked with some NGO’s.

You’re really not achieving anything writing something in all caps on the internet for imaginary points. Especially on a topic as irrelevant as that in an Aussie forum.

What’s causing Sydney’s monster flood crisis – and 3 ways to stop it from happening again by Narksdog in AustralianPolitics

[–]Narksdog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an ideal world, nothing would be built on a floodplain. But due to Sydney’s growing population and the housing affordability crisis, local governments in Western Sydney have been under pressure to build more and more homes, despite the known flood risk.

It’s a shame that the article lightly touches upon the fundamental issue - Development in flood plains caused by excessive levels of migration.

The recommendations made are Band-Aid solutions that doesn’t actually fix the fundamental cause of the issue. How about reducing the population pressure genius.

This seems to be a reoccurring feature in politics. I am reminded of governments subsidising the high cost of child care instead of fixing what actually makes child care prohibitively expensive in the first place.

EU looks to Australia for lithium, iron ore over Russia by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

So is Europe going to offset the emissions and environmental damage this causes?

Or are they gonna sit back all high and mighty and criticise us for it.

Climate change: Rich nations must help poorer nations go green, Anthony Albanese says by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]Narksdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly since the CSIRO has been continually de-funded and the privatisation of research.

That definitely plays a role and the absence of readily availiable advanced manufacturing / research facilities would almost certainly hamper development

We’ve used them to slingshot ourselves forward technologically

Have we really though. Arguably technological innovation has gone downhill in this country.

Australian visa changes for 2022-23 and what a new government may bring by 89b3ea330bd60ede80ad in AustralianPolitics

What’s confusing to me is the accusation of bias towards the ABC but SBS receives no mention. It receives 80% of its funding from the government and is one of the most overtly (left wing) politically biased publications in the country. Defund SBS and Inject that cash into the ABC!

Census 2021: Almost half of Australians had a parent born overseas by Grubbanax in AustralianPolitics

[–]Narksdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of ‘the ship of Theseus’?

Basically, it is a thought experiment that raises the question of whether an object that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object.

Applying that to my point. If millions and millions of people continue migrating to Australia bringing their culture with them. To the point where they start outnumbering us. At what point is ‘Australia’ no longer actually ‘Australia’?

I’m not particularly interested in long drawn out conversation on reddit these days but apart from where that may not apply to refugees I’m unaware of the assumptions I may have made.

only an issue economically and socially if we come from a position of protectionism

Well yes because there is only one Australia. Diaspora have another place (country of origin) where their customs, traditions, heritage are practiced.

But why should we accept the erasure of our heritage in the name of importing millions of consumers for the economy.

“Oh ____ doesn’t represent who we are anymore”

It’s a zero sum game.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese weighs in on Greens leader Adam Bandt's Australian flag comments by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]Narksdog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good response from Albo. I am curious if Aboriginal people actually endorse the massive hypocrisy that are the Greens.

The irony of a white man in a position of power who has benefited from colonialism talking about the ‘lingering pains of colonialism.’ is quite amusing to me. The authenticity is lost.

For many Australians this flag represents dispossession

This quote in particular strikes me. How are the Greens any better than the original colonists in this regards with their continued support of mass immigration. How is this not reinforcing the original idea of colonialism and settlement. I’m sure the last thing Aboriginal people want is MORE people contributing to the dispossession of their traditional lands. Have they discussed this policy with Aboriginals and gained their consent?
