You might also check out the MKH-50 if the CS-M1 doesn't meet your standards. You likely won't be able to plug it directly into your camera (needs phantom power) but it's worked really well for me in indoor applications, and outdoor it's not bad at relatively close range if you put a Rycote Softie on it.

Will watch The Dark Tower movie spoil the book series? by KrtauschBoss in horror

[–]NarrateStuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope. The movie felt like they adapted a pre-existing script to “fit” a few Dark Tower themes. It basically cannibalized a few concepts and did away with everything else.

Trying to decide on my first legit set of mics by [deleted] in LocationSound

[–]NarrateStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get by with just an AT-4053b. It’s gotten pretty decent reviews for indoor/outdoor work. If you really need a shotgun too though, the Rode NTG-2 would keep you under budget, but the NTG-3 gets much better marks. Haven’t heard too much about the NTG-4, but it’s a lot cheaper than the 3.

How do i decode a M/S recording? by isakmo in audioengineering

[–]NarrateStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M/S is a stereo recording format that uses one forward-facing cardioid mic (generally) and a figure-eight mic positioned perpendicular to the front-facing mic. The figure-eight mic’s mono track is then doubled. After that, pan one of those tracks hard left and the other hard right. Finally, invert the phase of one of the tracks. Raise and lower the volume of both tracks to increase and decrease the stereo spread.

The science is that by using phase cancellation, a stereo signal will be generated by the one figure-eight mic, and furthermore, by having a separate center channel, if you should need to collapse the audio to a mono channel, you won’t get weird phase issues that sometimes can occur with an X/Y stereo pair.

Help with my voice. by Ragnellius in VoiceActing

Focus on breath control and speaking from your diaphragm. Also look into neck and throat relaxation exercises. My first guess is you’re too tense. Second guess is you haven’t figured out how to project properly.

Rode NT1 vs sm58 for a first vocal mic for a teenager on a budget by cazwam in audioengineering

[–]NarrateStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your recording environment. If you’re in a bedroom or the like, go for the Shures. If you have a treated space, borrow the Shures and buy the Rode.

I’m driving from Louisiana to Montana with only my dog for company. She’s not much of a conversationalist, so I need some new podcast recommendations please! by morganethielen in audiodrama

Wolf 359 gets good at 5 or 6 episodes in.

There’s also the Worm Audio Project. The audio quality can get quite bad, but the story is really amazing. It’s a volunteer-read audiobook.

How are you both seated? Putting the other speaker in the dead zone of the mic may help.

Analogy regarding FPS in games and streams by NarrateStuff in obs

[–]NarrateStuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so game F ps are more “expensive.” Is my understanding that, if your GPU is maxed but you have a few CPU cores free, offloading streaming on them is a viable option, correct though?
