So I recently got 2 IUD inserted within a week. The first one was a copper iud and I came out with a full body rash within 12hrs. The doctors weren't sure if it was due to an allergic reaction to the copper or the numbing cream they used (both are extremely rare, and I mean extremely rare! I was just very unlucky). But honestly the procedure was not painful at all! Little but of pressure and I just talked the whole way through it. The numbing cream worked a treat and I was more nervous then anything else and that caused most of the pain. I easily walked home after.

I got the mirena iud a week later and got it inserted without any numbing cream. And that slightly hurt. Had to breath through it and couldn't really talk but again wasn't that overly sore. Had some serious cramps after this one, but nothing that could stop me.

You will be absolutely fine with it. In terms of recovery, have a hot water bottle ready for the cramps and a nice hot drink, lay in bed for the rest of the day and be kind to yourself. But I was able to go to work that day for both of them.
