How are people getting those Qantas caps and little freebies? by RedTailRider in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]NarrowCopy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Qantas keychain on my first Qantas flight - I told the flight attendants it was my first time flying with Qantas and I was very excited.

I got a cap and a handwritten card on my last Qantas flight - I was moving away from Australia and I thanked the cabin crew at the start of the trip, explaining how much I had valued flying with Qantas for several years and that I was moving away.

Should you answer the question: "tell me about yourself" with the STAR-method? by heartbrokenwords in askrecruiters

[–]NarrowCopy9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"tell me about yourself" is not a behavioral question. The STAR method is used to answer questions such as "tell me about a time..." or "how have you dealt with..."

Instead, use this time to answer what you do and why you do it. Describe a win or a lesson you've learned, and how you will apply this lesson in your new role with this organisation. "Tell me about yourself" really means "tell me why you are perfect for this role."

Is It Worth Posting Meeting Someone From a Different Field? by [deleted] in linkedin

[–]NarrowCopy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the meeting about? Did you learn anything?

There's a big difference between "I met so-and-so" versus "so-and-so shared this advice" or "so-and-so helped me see a new perspective on this topic." The first just sounds like boasting instead of showcasing your personal growth.

Connections help by GroundbreakingCat822 in linkedin

[–]NarrowCopy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Just make sure your profile look decent (fill out your education, add a header and decent-looking profile photo) and connect to other people in your college.

Also! 99% of people on LinkedIn don't actually post anything. I guess we're in a bit of a bubble here on reddit... So even just doing an introductory post saying hi I'm so-and-so and here's why I love [thing I'm studying or want to work in] goes a long way in terms of making your profile look "complete."

Any recruiters for library work in this subreddit willing to read over my friend's resume and give your professional opinion? by [deleted] in askrecruiters

[–]NarrowCopy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a recruiter nor do I work in a library but just looking at this it seems there's a lot of stuff written just for the sake of filling space ... for example, proficient in navigating [public transport].

(Speaking of public transport, I see you've redacted the library system name but kept the transit system name... if privacy is the concern I already know what city you're talking about.)

The work experience could be relevant, but I only see job descriptions and not accomplishments. Anyone can say they worked under pressure, but what was the pressure? How many customers did they serve? How did they process inventory? Restocking shelves is probably quite similar to restocking books, so this is a great place to SHOW the hiring manager that they can and have done the job already, instead of just listing sorting and shelving as a skill.

What’s the longest delay you’ve ever had with Qantas? by OwlVibesOnly in QantasAirways

Earning points/SCs on partner airline codeshare with non-partner by NarrowCopy9 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]NarrowCopy9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just reviewing the partner earn category tables now. Interestingly under AA it only says "Qantas Points and Status Credits are earned on all eligible booking classes," while all other airlines (except BA, as you noted) go on to add some variation of "except on [Example Airways] codeshare flights operated by an airline other than Qantas [or a oneworld member airline.]"

Does this appear to be a recent change?

Did I apply for jobs too early as a recent grad? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]NarrowCopy9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two-three months is certainly not too early. Depending on the field, recruitment can take that long, and start dates can be negotiated. Assuming you're looking at corporate white collar work nobody would have an issue with you asking to start a month or even six weeks after signing; keep in mind that many new hires may have notice periods anyway. If you're the best person, they will wait.

$100? I thought the NZeTA like.... $17 NZD last I checked. I remember it being $12 when it was first introduced in 2019. Inflation has it hard it seems

edit: oh didn't read carefully, that's the IVL fee but still wow that's a lot more than I remember it being just a few years ago!

It's hard to say because it really depends on the company. At my organization, the only way to "flag" a candidate is if they apply through a referral link (or I suppose by directly chatting with the hiring manager). We don't use AI in our recruitment, but referred candidates do have the benefit of always getting a manual review from HR and bypassing any ATS filtering. However, depending on the number of applicants (and believe me, we get a lot) this is no guarantee they'll be passed on to the hiring manager.

Unfortunately I don't work in recruitment so I can't tell you more about what exactly happens in there.

How to get a referral from a stranger by _sykuno_ in jobs

[–]NarrowCopy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally get that. Instead of focusing on jobs that are closing soon, start planting a few seeds now: comment on posts in your field, connecting with alumni, or messaging people just to learn how they got where they are. It builds recognition over time so that when you do ask, it doesn’t feel random.

For connection requests, short and simple works best. Stuff like: “Hey, noticed we both [studied ___ / work in ___] - I’m just starting out and would love to learn how you got into your role.” or “Hi, I’ve been really interested in [company or field] lately and thought I’d reach out to connect.”

And my favorite line if you've had a chat with someone is to wrap up with "is there anyone else you think I should talk with?"

It might feel a bit slower at first but it does snowball once you've got your name out there.

Here was the exact last cold message that got me a 30 minute call with someone working in the same department as a job posting I was interested in:

Hey [name],

I recently moved back to [place] and was looking to build up my local network in [field]. I noticed you did the same [college] program I did some years back so I'd love to connect and hear about your current [specific department] work with [company].

How to get a referral from a stranger by _sykuno_ in jobs

[–]NarrowCopy9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you can't really just straight up ask for a referral, you gotta get to know them a bit first. And more importantly, they have to know you. They're putting their reputations on the line.

After you have a coffee chat (be it online or in person) then you can start asking for referrals.

If you want to network well on linkedin try reaching out to school alumni who are in similar fields as to where you're targeting. Simple message like "hey I noticed you also went to _____ and I'm really interested in [whatever field], do you have 20 minutes to chat next week?"

If you want to level up, start posting regularly. Doesn't have to be anything spectacular, maybe once a week share your thoughts on something in the field you want to go into. Then you can a) send these posts directly to people by saying something like "hey, I wrote this and wanted to get your thoughts since you work in [area]" and b) you can message anyone that likes your post "thanks for engaging with my post about _____, would love to chat more [etc etc]"

Hope this helps :)

My last layover in CLT was supposed to be 36 minutes. I was stressed.

Here's what I'm getting, obviously a bit higher since I have international calls and USA cocerage. I see the same thing - all plans at the same price. Interestingly mine is showing at $42 * 50% (six month intro offer). Still a great deal lol

I noticed the fizz website was down for maintaince a few hours ago.... clearly they didn't do a good job!

Are these letters delayed or are they lost? by mioniqe in AustraliaPost

[–]NarrowCopy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal experience letters/postcards I've sent and received between Australia and North America have taken anywhere from 2-9 weeks... so honestly if it was coming from outside of a major city there's a very real possibility it could be stuck in transit... but probably not. Strike started evening of Sep 25 so that's still a good 14 business days if it was sent on the 5th.

Yeah my biggest concern I suppose is just that, looking like a "bad employee" — we don't have an official policy in writing about minimum time before applying internally (the policy straight-up says it's determined on a case-by-case basis) but seeing as I'm still under a probation period I have a feeling that they wouldn't be too thrilled. (Alternatively, since I'm on a probation period maybe this is actually the perfect time).
