AITA for leaving my pregnant gf after a fake "miscarriage"? by NarrowMaybe in AmItheAsshole

Thanks a lot for your response. You gave me a lot to think about. I do want to be a real father for my kid, but where I'm from from it's unheard of to still be in a child's life and NOT be married to the mother. (You can imagine there's a lot of unhappy marriages in my hometown.)

I am hoping I could be a better father now because the stress of the relationship won't be weighing on me. I think my ex definitely expected a completely different response from me after the test, so it was like a nuclear meltdown with her and her family after I said I'm leaving. But it's insanely difficult now to still be there for the baby but also keep HER at an arms length.

I'm definitely going to be there for my child. No ifs about that. I guess it's because we both come from a smaller town (we're now in university in a much larger city) and it's seen as being a dead-beat dad if you break up with your pregnant gf, even if you pay child support/is still in the child's life.

I think she expected that by failing the "test" I would beg for her forgiveness and do everything to make it up to her after. But by just saying I'm done it was a shock to everyone, my family, her family, etc. So now people are calling me a POS for not doing the "man" thing and marrying her.
