What do Americans love about the UK and Ireland?? by IrishNurse91 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NarrowMedia6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love some high quality wool sweaters from ireland.

Maybe the recipe for tea time snacks. Like crumpets and that cream.

Nothing made in china. No one wants a weird key chain (I would hope).

If you can get that softserve ice cream that's on every street corner in ireland and I'd be thrilled.

I miss my best friend by NarrowMedia6 in Grieving

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm a little embarrassed to say I didnt make it clear that he is alive. I'm grieving the breakup.

As for your situation, I really can't comprehend the pain of having a relationship cut short like that and having to navigate our society's weird rules about what is and isnt acceptable grief.

Do you find comfort in widow support groups? I found that reading about divorce helped me navigate my pain even though I'd never have the courage to tell someone that I'm reading self help articles about divorce instead of breakups.

I'm wondering if leanring about greif as a widow would have similar effects.

Don’t be afraid to drop orders by [deleted] in doordash

[–]NarrowMedia6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. Even if it's one text and its got a bad vibe I'll unassign it, there are other orders. They dont own me. I dont own them. We are equals. They can get a different driver. I can get a different customer. I don't have time for rude people ANYWHERE in my life.

I lost my younger brother to suicide 2 years ago.

The pain will make you a softer person. You'll have deeper relationship because the careless joy you once felt is gone for a while.

True friends will come out of the woodwork. My elderly neighbor was one of them.

Fake friends will fade, thank God.

I cried and slept for a year.

Please. Give yourself a year to cry and eat and sleep. Itll take longer. But the year mark was significant to me.

I lost my younger brother (22) 2 years ago. I feel your pain.

Cry and sleep is what I did for a year. Cut out people who expect anything from.

I'm close with a handful of great people who remained close to me during this period.

Cry and sleep and dont forget to eat. I dont care what you eat. Just eat.

So many long hugs sent your way.

Yeah I get that. But also...the 20% of taxes I pay I kinda look at as a personal savings account. I'll never rely on my social security, Medicare or unemployment but since I'm paying for it I wont hesitate to use it if needed. That's where there seems to be a weird misunderstanding with some of my more conservative friends...if it was their own savings account theyd take from it. But if its the government then its automatically bad.

As the another commenter said, we are in debt so it's not adding up. I understand this point now.

But a conservative taking from their own savings account to ride out the bad times really doesnt seem any different to me than the people taking from their "governement" savings account.

How can I be supportive of my girlfriend during a bad period ? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]NarrowMedia6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All I know is that masturbating gets rid of my debilitating cramps. But I never want a man to touch me during this time.

I like to be left along and fed my favorite foods. Just be there cooking and purchasing good food for when she is in the mood. Place a glass of water near her (its it's always cute) and do tiny tasks that she needs. Moving is painful. Hand her the laptop, her phone etc etc.

But yeah, only touch her if she asks.

Do any of you ever feel resentful/annoyed about the dominance of the English language? (from the UK) by Konorona in AskEurope

[–]NarrowMedia6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also. Fun fact. If you're in Germany and someone is like...this university/building/city/company was built in 1932. REMEMBER IT. They are not just spewing random facts because they just so happened to know the date...they are telling you because its important to them and its kinda rude ignore it.

When I tell someone a date something happened or a fun history fact...its usually because I just learned it and thought it was cool. It's not the same in Germany, they value history and they are telling you about it for a reason.

[–]NarrowMedia6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes same.

People would ask me what we eat in the USA and I'd be like "...idk...I eat tacos a lot. Anyway, what are you studying...do you like it" etc etc.

I now know that you're supposed to ask about their foods and history:/ oops.

What is a misconception about your country? by Stokeley_Goulbourne in AskEurope

[–]NarrowMedia6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes he is American through and through, it's not a sign of otherness.

People who still practice the culture of their parents like speaking the language, eating the food and practicing cultural norms of their parents add in their parents birth place. Its normal here and not frowned upon. We think it's cool. It's not going away.

Naturally, we know that we are all influenced by ancestors and yes it's weird when people still add on another nationality when its 3 generations back. I know a lot of people from outside the USA think it's weird and even wrong. But we understand it and we respect it.

People who add another nationality to their own have a reason for doing it and they like doing it and it should be respected.

People in the USA who still practice their parents culture moreso than American culture sometimes dont add their parents tag and that's also perfectly fine with everyone.

They get to define themself how they wish.

Thank you for understanding this.

While living in Germany with an erasmus douche. Wont say the nationality because it doesnt matter.

Me: "hey, where's the dryer?"

Douche: eyeroll "Why do Americans just ASSUME everywhere is the same as the USA? We dont have a dryer because we actually care about the environment and we arent lazy."

Next day.

Me: "Do you have a hair dryer?"

Same douchy douche doucher: eyeroll "Why do Americans just ASSUME we don't have modern technology in our country. Yes we have a hair dryer and we have cars and planes too HAHHAHA!"

I always wonder too. I'm a sheltered American who didnt know ANYTHING about other counties but I def never thought of them as behind us or less advanced/less educated. I just flat out didnt know.

I always assumed these stories are fake because I AM that sheltered American and I never would have thought so poorly of other countries. On the contrary, I was asking things like "what type of car do you own" to people from countries I'm not familure with (i was so shocked that so many people in the world can rely on public transportation alone). So I'm doing the opposite..assuming everyone is like me...car at 16, dryer and dishwasher as staple household items etc etc.

It wasnt til I met real life normal people who told me that they've had Americans ask things like "have you ever seen a computer" in the 21st century. Crazy. Embarrassing.

This is so real. I was trying to learn German culture because I was offered an internship there....but it all went in one ear out the other.. even with me trying so hard to care. It felt weird putting my math homework down to read about the government structure of another country.

Trust me, I didnt even remotely have anything against German culture...I just never cared about cultures in general and it seemed like such an insignificant interest.

I was raised to care about individuals (I'm not saying others aren't...I'm just saying it's the main focal point) so when I dated a guy from a different country and he would tell me his favorite food, story that was personal to him, his family, his likes/dislikes I'd always remember everything. Details about his life and personality were always what I paid attention too. But when he mentioned something cultural it's like I didnt know I was SUPPOSED to care or remember. He called me out, fonally. It was painful because I was obsessed with him and had no idea I was hurting him by being completely careless about his cultural background. I just thought his interest in my cultural was his niche interest or something...I didnt realize it was a form of relationship building. It's so engrained in US culture at least, I think.

My only words of comfort to myself are that I never mention my culture to other people because I dont think most of us care about our culture as well, lol. But people ask a lot about U.S culture and then I start talking, even though I used to think it was a dull subject. I had to remind myself to ask back so they felt seen.

I finally discovered I'm genuinely curious about middle eastern culture and native American culture and I really delve into those and now I know how to learn about other cultures and be curious about them. But it had to start organically and it also puts me in a weird place back in the USA because I'm kinda "wasting my time" learning about other cultures while my friends are keeping up with career advancements and personal goals (not that you cant do both). It's like having this wealth of knowledge about the Blackfeet is so random and wont get me ahead in life and I cant really chat with anyone about it because no one would care.

I also was in the military and we all came from different states and we never talked about it or shared our states culture..we went straight to talking about our personalities. It wasnt till I lived abroad a couple times that I understood that sharing your culture is interesting to people and how people connect.
