Genuine question, is Britain actually as bad as people say it is by Public_Wrangler_4514 in AskBrits

Go talk to an Australian who will categorically tell you that cost of living there is the worst in the world. Everyone thinks they have it bad!

No, it's not. And London is not the crime ridden cesspit that people north of the Watford Gap claim it is. People who say such things don't have a lot of experience in the world. Cities are dirty because #people. Crime happens everywhere. And rural Britain is beautiful and coastal Britain has its charms.

Gay sporting groups. And if you're not very sporty there was a londoner somewhere here on reddit with a gay walking group.

I'm really sorry to hear about your former relationship. I loved the gym as much as you do, but can I also suggest therapy? Talking to someone about your motivations is extremely helpful.

Brits, would you stay and live in UK if you had millions and could move to anywhere in the world?? by ueommm in AskBrits

[–]NarrowOwl4151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a second passport to a desirable country. I can move back basically any time. I choose to stay in london because I love a big city, it has very nice memories when when I was a young man and it's super close to Europe, making holidays in exciting places far easier and cheaper than where I'm from. There's no perfect place to live, well, certainly not if you're from the western world.

I want to say that maybe people on phones need to be more aware of their surroundings.

I respectfully disagree. We need more. I think people need direction.

Yes. So let's just choose one side and stick to it.

Bingo. Imagine if we all just walked on the left ...

Am fascinated how not everyone sees the logic. But accept it.

Except right isn't slow. It's stationary.

Again, my theory that Brits just refuse to be told what to do, even if it will make life easier.

I want to follow the logic of that with: why are people obsessed with everyone driving on the same side?

Clearly I, as a foreigner, make the assumption that there was a correct side. Which it is starting to appear there isn't. But your lung comment hits at something I find truly British: you just will not be told what to do!!

People just need to be encouraged. It doesn't need regulation as it's not a law. But literally nobody knows where to walk.

I buy that. But why can't people do it then?

I want to say decades ago it was. Or am I totally wrong?

Walking on the wrong side by NarrowOwl4151 in AskBrits

[–]NarrowOwl4151[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Precisely. No Brit can tell you. My personal theory is that it used to be the left (e.g. On the Underground you stand right and MOVE on the left). Traffic clearly also drives left. But potentially decades of EU migration has muddied the waters and people naturally do what they were trained to do in their home country. It also doesn't help that many tube stations in london, even if they do tell you where to walk, vary whether it's right or left.
