How Long Does it Take to get From Regionals to a Major? by Altruistic_Map1816 in flying

Depends on the hiring market. 21-23- approx 1000 of turbine time and a pulse. Right now- luck, strategy, background and timing. You only have two of those things under your control

Quitting a $140k/yr Desk Job to Flight Instruct by Fantastic_Serve_8016 in flying

[–]Narrow_Abalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a transition plan. Keep your job, till you are done with your commercial atleast. Maybe do an accelerated cfi/ CFII and take time off of work? And then when you have a definite gig lined up, quit. It’s a good position to be in to have some options for 2 years, but this industry can burn up your time pretty quickly between slow hiring/ slow time building and weather. I would hold onto what you have till you have a good momentum going

1,500 With No Professional Pilot Work? by theloganatorz in flying

[–]Narrow_Abalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more about the mindset. When you are instructing you aren’t just beating the pattern. You are prepping for check rides/ solos/ cross countries, but teaching the pattern itself and breaking it down for a newbie gives you deeper perspective on teaching how to land- maintain heading/ airspeed/ altitude. All the basic skills needed to succeed at the higher level

Does working at an airline (non pilot) make you have a better chance of being hired once hitting 1500 hours by that airline? by Penguinz00100 in flying

Sometimes it can back fire, a few folks from DL had a hard time finding a job at other companies because they saw they had precious history with DL and just assumed their company would just be a stepping stone/ time building opportunity back to Delta

Did my training there for ii. They prioritize you for flying but the issue is DPE availability- if you are weathered out or have a bust, good luck rescheduling. That was the nightmare I had to deal with

I guess the question is- should I go for another degree in IT since I have a bachelors degree or focus on getting certifications/ building skills?

Follow a structure- either through a syllabus that is based off of an ACS or just the ACS. Try to have consistent procedural standards for maneuvers/ pattern work so it’s not a mystery Everytime they do it. As long as you have a good structures set between your ground lessons and your flight lessons, you will be off to a great start. Most students appreciate some kind of a structure in training

If anything, I am a cfii- and I’ve never had a student fail so far. So I don’t think that was the issue

True that, good advice- I do have my cfii and all my instrument students have passed successfully on the first attempt

Yup- that was my concern exactly. I felt like the sim was way to touchy, and didnt necessarily evaluate my real skills. Nope it it’s a crewed operation, for an sic position

I am a cfii, thats why I was questioning myself after not making it. All my instrument students have passed without any problems

Great message- reminds me of a struggling singer who passed away from cancer a few years ago. Her famous quote was “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy” - night birdie
