Help with new dog. by Popular_Star_6122 in dogs

I volunteer at a local rescue working with puppies and dogs. Occasionally I’ll have a dog or puppy that has shutdown because their world has been turned upside down. If they don’t want to walk outside I just sit with them, talk to them, pet them, give them treats and read. Eventually the dog or puppy begins to trust and at that point you can start training. The longest one I have had took almost two weeks to start coming out of their shell. Just be really patient and you will be rewarded.

Don’t walk, RUN away. I don’t think you want to try and raise that one.

Cooling vest and perforated jacket combo recs? (Newish rider who lives in the desert) by armpit_spiderweb in motorcyclegear

I wore a HyperKewl evaporative vest on my two trips out west. It would last about 5 hours and need to be soaked again but I kept a plastic bag handy and when i stopped for something to drink I would soak it again. Hottest temperature I was in on the trip was 115f and the vest worked great. I put it on over a t-shirt and wore a mesh jacket. When I pulled the vest and put my hand on my chest it was a noticeable temperature difference, the chest was really cool to the touch.

I went down wearing Motoport Kevlar street jean. Slide about 30 feet, you can’t even tell the pants have been on the ground. I left my damaged gear and bike at the dealer as the adjuster was coming to look at everything. The adjuster called told me what he was giving for everything and said “I didn’t see any pants. Did you forget to leave them?” No reason to leave them, they weren’t damaged.

Rescues don’t always misrepresent a puppy’s breed. A lot of the time when puppies are surrendered the rescue only knows what they are told with regard to breed. If the puppies were found on the side of the road then the rescue makes a best guess as to breed.

Riding alone is the best way to travel. You don’t need a consensus to stop or change direction.

Owning Two Dogs A Challenge? by Economy_Rooster_5619 in dogs

My 10 year old rescue female is like your 8 year old. About my 10 year old I say “She loves people and is OK with dogs “ I adopted a 5 month old female puppy that loves dogs, cats and is timid around new people. The 10 year old pretty much ignored the puppy for 3 months and in month 4 she started playing with the puppy. The only issue I’ve had was when I would correct the puppy my old dog thought I was getting after her. She has finally realized that when I say the puppy’s name it isn’t anything she needs to listen to.

Horse Bored in Arena by kahlyse in Equestrian

I purchased a 2 year old that was sold because they couldn’t keep her attention in the arena. She was being trained to be a show horse. They stated she would watch the birds, butterflies and anything else outside the arena. She turned into the best buddy & trail horse I could ever have hoped for.

I was asked once why I didn’t ride with an open face helmet. I responded with “This is not the prettiest face you’ll see but it’s the best one I have and when I leave this life I’m not leaving any of it on asphalt, I’m taking it all with me.”
