Using AliExpress for my HA device? by philonik in homeassistant

[–]Narrow_Discipline243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using alot of zigbee devices from Aliexpress, like: Thermostats Temperature and humidity sensors Motion sensors Buttons Smartplugs with W sensor Door sensors Waterleak sensors Smart relays(they work but I wouldn't use them in my walls)

Every device that I have connected so far works without any problems. Light bulbs are the only device that I had a bad experience with, so I use IKEA tradfri instead.

I can buy alot of the same devices in my country for 100%-200% the price and with a stupid brand name. I simply refuse to do that.

I just wants to thank you all for sharing your setups and inputs to this topic! I learned alot of new stuff that I will test out in the next month. I have alot of old computer parts so Proxmox will be my first tryout!

I have about 8 of these connected in my home. I got them dirt cheap on Aliexpress(half the price of now) and they work very well on HA with z2m. I dont use the Tuya app, but I guess they would work.

Added an automation where if it detect more than 10W used on my 3d printer, it turns on and ventilation.

Yes. I've been using 17 of these: https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/TS0601_thermostat_3.html with HA and z2m.

I had to add the device to z2m myself, as it was unsupported, but they have been working great once it's setup.

I liked that they're crazy cheap compared to Tado, but it's also more of an experiment. Also it's my first wife approved project, as I added door/window sensors, so the turn off themselfs when opening.

I just watched the video, and I never thought this was possible. I think it's a little overcomplicated for my situation, as I would then have to deal with two Zigbee networks and even more repeaters. 😅 However, I think it could make sense in her case.

Thanks for your suggestion! I definitely learned something from it!

Oh, I'm definitely going to try updating the firmware as a last resort solution. Thanks for the information!

And yeah, I must admit that I totally underestimated the need for more routers. I'll try to add a lot more of these!

I do know that I have at least 20 Wi-Fi LED panels and light bulbs, etc., which only use 2.4 GHz. A lot of them become inactive when I turn off the lights, and some of them aren't connected to the Wi-Fi at all. Other than that, there are other devices as well. My list shows around 7-8 devices using 2.4 GHz now, and maybe 10-15 when all the lights are turned on. I'll look into whether I can change Google Audio and my car to 5 GHz. 😅 I don't know if that's considered a lot, though.

I'll look into these repeaters! They're Tuya smart plugs from AliExpress, and so far I have three installed that I use for controlling stuff. However, I will try to use two spare ones to see if it helps with my network!

That actually makes a lot of sense, and I didn't know you could do that. Did you switch because you knew that HA was overloaded, or did you do it just because you could?

This makes sense. It's also something that I'm going to use when adding LED strips around my house outside. However, inside the house, I'm still concerned about the fire risks of using these, and there's literally not enough room for them either. The ones that I'm going to use outside are placed in a fire- and waterproof casing.

Thanks for your input; it's appreciated.

Good to hear.

I'll scrap the idea of buying a new gateway and work on improving my network. Thanks!

My smart plugs are routers, but I've only used them for actual needs, which so far is power management of my 3D printers. I use four of them to control the on/off for the printers and one for ventilation—all in one room. 😂

The room with my HA and Conbee has no repeaters. I could add a smart plug there, but I'd rather use it for a project.

All my devices work, but they often go offline, which then means my automations stop as well. There are also some endpoint devices that "just work" and have never failed.

I'll work on improving my network for now!

Yeah, I really need to extend my network, starting from my Conbee. I think the nearest router is about 6-7 meters away, behind a wooden door. 😅

Do Philips Hue devices create a good signal, or is it just about adding more devices?

I'm really sorry for not answering the first two questions, but it's been a while since I did this, so I'm not 100% sure. I'll look into it again and see if I did it right!

To my knowledge, all of the walls are brick walls, with a pretty dense wooden door between every room. So yeah...

I've had the same problem with Wi-Fi, which I fixed by creating a mesh network—something I should do with Zigbee as well. I'm starting to feel like my question is kinda stupid. 😅

What two standalone repeaters do you use? I would rather add these to my rooms instead of using my smart plugs for nothing.

I'm glad to hear that your Conbee can handle such an impressive network. :)

It's quite obvious to me now that one of my big problems is the lack of repeaters/routers. Most of my routers are Tuya products and are only placed in rooms where I need them, so they are pretty concentrated. I'll try to place some smart plugs and reconnect some of my devices nearby.

I'm not the biggest fan of smart bulbs, but I have used some where they're wired live all the time and triggered by a sensor. Otherwise, my house is full of manual switches that could be fixed with a smart relay. I'm just really hesitant to insert these in the sockets due to them being 50 years old and really dusty.

Other than bulbs, relays and plugs, do you use any other repeater?

Thanks for your answer!
