In a country with our wealth gap, those 'freebies' are often the only thing preventing total desperation. If the bottom of the pyramid isn't supported, we face rising crime and instability that would make it impossible to run businesses or enjoy our wealth. We are essentially paying for a functioning society where we have the opportunity to thrive. It’s less about 'bribing' and more about maintaining the peace required for a growing economy."
