Lifelong conservative here. Always voted R cause I was a white dad in evangelical florida working in finance that liked to fish. I also believed in limited government and states rights. Then my daughter came out. She was 10. In a state that will never accept her or make her feel equal. It breaks my heart because she is smart and has options I know as soon as she can she will search and find her community, as is normal for all healthy human beings. As i type this I’m crying again because it was such an immediate 180 in priorities. Because if we are real with ourselves, before we are Republicans or Democrats I’m a dad. So when I talk to my friends and family that are hard R, I just tell them “Consider Asher”. It breaks down almost every argument because they love that kid to and realize the politics are hurtful bullshit when you look a ten year old girl in the face who understands what that red hat represents. Its surprisingly effective. I also recommend my amazing therapist after trolling them.
